Jan, it would be far better to do a book by book Bible study. Too often single verses are read out of their proper context and twisted all out of shape. This is how we end up with more denomination.

Read the books, each chapter in its entirety before pondering the meaning of a single verse, often the context provides the answer.

That would take forever. Do we have the time & patience to start something like that?

Just start it Jan

Compare that verse with others that seem to say the opposite of what you knew on another scripture. Many times we don't read the whole context and just pick verses. Many people do that and that is why they answer a certain way. Buy some commentaries that can help you. God has used many brothers and sisters for that purpose. There is so much to learn. Have fun learning word per word. All for the glory of God.

I kept running into problems many times because I didn't know the Nature of God or His Attributes first. I have read the bible about three times and now we are also going verse per verse and I know it will take a long time but when you do that you get more out of what is happening at the time then when you read faster. Points to watch out are: 1. What was happening at that time of the verse. 2. Who was the writer speaking to at that time. 3.

Sister Jan, let me just mention something to you that was very helpful for me after I was five years walking with the Lord. I think everyone who is starting should know. It is to study the Attributes of God. I mean God's nature and attributes. It is so vital that we know because when we come to the Lord we know that God is love and we assume from that point on that it is always love. So when we read a verse we go into the verse thinking that way. But God is a got of Justice and wrath too.

We shuold always make time for God's word. That bible study group would be a blessing for someone who doesn't know how to study.

Yes, but that is more likely in the church at the Bible study meetings. We have one like that in my home church, here in Dakar, senegal, where a portion is interractively discussed. I do enjoy it so much because I gain better understanding. So why not join the Bible study class in your local church today and if it is not already happening, call the pastors attention to it. Cheers

Jan, the best Bible study you can have is all by yourself with a good reference Bible,if you are wanting to learn God's truth.Pick a subject, instead of just a verse and run the references all the way through for a better understanding.Even on here a subject would make for better study unles the verse is a very complicated and hard to understand one you need help with.God Bless
