Why Does God Test Us

I've read in this blog that God will do things to 'test' our faith. Why? If he knows us and knows what is in our hearts already, Why does he have to make bad things happen to 'test' us??

God tests us for us, otherwise your faith which you profess with your lips is unproven words: but after testing that what you say with your mouth, and your words are found to be true, then you will surely know that you know without having any doubts in your words of belief, and you will be able to say, as Job says it well: "But he knows the way with me, I am tried: I will come forward as gold. My foot has held fast to his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips, I have treasured the words of his mouth more than mine appointed portion." Job 23:10-12.

Well the reason WE are not destined for wrath, because the WE here are those who have placed OUR faith in Jesus Christ.

Those who have placed their faith in Christ have Christ INDWELLING THEM just as scripture tells us. But MarkV you said the Holy spirit is not in you are destined for wrath!

Romans 8:9
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.

Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
---kathr4453 on 6/3/11

So if I am destined for wrath, then your god is a sadist. He created me to perpetually torture me, and I have no choice but to do and think as I do and be punished for it.

You on the other hand gloat in the salvation you also have no choice about, and condescendingly address me.

Such a god!
---atheist on 6/3/11

Craig, you are wrong in your answer, because you did not think about it, all you did was jump on mine because of your free will.
For your infomation, many athiest have come to Christ. You know why? Because the natural man is enslaved to sin, he is a child of Satan, rebellious toward God, blind to Truth, corrupt, and unable to save himself or to prepare himself for salvation. In short, the unregenerate man is dead in sin, and his will is enslaved to his evil nature. Unless God does a supernatural act in his heart, he will remain there forever. Whether you like it or not. For God brings life to the lost soul.
---Mark_V. on 6/3/11

Yeah, Mark, because no atheist "destined for wrath" has ever come to Christ...

Give it a rest will ya.
---CraigA on 6/2/11

Well, then if he is there and omnipotent, he is quite the sadist...
---atheist on 6/2/11

I have no wish to argue, but I would like to "hear" what you think.
---Allan on 6/2/11

Athiest, though your comment is meant to speak against God, even He knew who you were going to be, before you were even born, an athiest. An opposer to His Word,

"They stumble because they disobey the Word, as they were destined to do."

And to the others who are the called He says,

"For God "has not destined us for wrath," but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ."

The difference between you and the elect of God is that we have a hope, and you don't.
---Mark_V. on 6/2/11

This did not come from Moses, the law and the prophets, apostles, nor anything in this universe.
But from the Lord Jesus Christ!

John 5:22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
You think he's trying to mislead you here? Or perfect your path?

By saying God tested Abraham!
You are saying God did not know what Abraham would do!
This is a lie!

For that! You might as well say, Abraham was testing God!
To see if he would raise his son.
This would be wrong also!

You guys make me laugh!
No one will or has been tested by God!
My words will not come back void.
Including you atheist

John 5:28
I lie not!
---TheSeg on 6/2/11

Atheist, if there were a SantaClausNet forum would you also waste all of your precious time trying to convince people that Santa Claus isnt real?

You know God is real. Do you honestly think 95% of the world has suffered from mass delusion for the past 6000+ years and you are part of the enlightened few?

Why not just admit that you hate God. Its not like He doesnt know it already and yet you still live, which (although you may not see it that way)is a testament to his unconditional love for you in spite of your hatred of him.

Just what is so bad about God that you hate him? What has He done to you?
---Jasheradan on 6/2/11

You're right. He isn't "there". He's here.
---Linda on 6/2/11

God tests us because if we knew that we were going to heaven, we wouldn't work as hard to have a close relationship with Him. Plus, we all have to part-take in the crucification of Christ in some form. If you notate, ALL of the disciples died horrible, tragic, deaths.

kathr4453: Since that other post is full I'm responding to you here. Based on how you spoke to me I believe you to be sincere.

Laughing at myself? I have no trouble laughing. I have a great sense of humor but I know the difference between an insult and a joke and abuse is not funny as per John's comments, etc.

My dad died over 20 years ago so I don't have to deal with him anymore. My mom is alive but estranged from me and my sister because of her bitterness. My parents were not affectionate or loving when I grew up. I am affectionate with my husband and am not cold towards my family.

I just don't like jerks. I've met way too many of them in my life. Time for me to move on to more positive and loving people.
---poopsey on 6/2/11

Kathr, you disagree because your god knows nothing, and is blind to what goes on around him so he has to test people to see whether they will be obedient or not, or whether they love him or not, or whether they have faith or not, that is your god, but as I have said before people like you would strip Deity of His Omniscience if they only could which proves that "the carnal mind is enmity against God" ( Rom. 8:7).,
My God is Sovereign God of the Universe, who knows all things even before they happen. He is Almighty, Omnipotent, and Omnipresent who is everywhere at one time, and again,
"there are many devices in a man's heart, nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand" (Prov. 19:21).
---Mark_V. on 6/2/11

Why do some think God tests us?
Like with Abraham, well was Abraham tested?
Now I'm not trying to be smart and most agree I'm not. HA HA

Does God know everything there is to know about you?
Is there anything you can hide from God?
Does God know what you're going to do, even before you do?

Even to ask is God going to test us? In itself is a test, isn't it?
If I, God know everything you will ever think, say or do.
Before you were even born!
Why do you believe it? Looks are deceiving!

God knows youre going to get a 95% on your test.
Wow, you'll never guess what I got on my test from God.
Judgments! John7:24

Eloy, what you posted in Job...awesome. That is one of the most profound moments in a CHRISTIAN's life. That moment when we finally see ourselves as we are, nothing compared to the Holiness of God.

Great scripture.

To bring you closer to him, and to help you understand that by testing your love for him you may know more deeper how much you truly love him and his love for you. At the end of righteous Job's testing, righteous Job said it well to God: "I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now mine eye sees you. Therefore despise I, and abase in dust and ashes." Job 42:5,6.

For the same reason we test people and things. To see if we are strong enough to handle stuff, are we loyal. What are we truly all about. You never tested anyone or anything? Gosh...That is the problem with christians in this country. We have gotten very comfortable and have not had to prove our love and faithfulness to Christ. Trials come to make us stronger. If we fail the test, guess what? We must keep going over the same ground until we past. The same reaason there are so many weak and powerless christians.

"There are many christians who will unknowingly receive the Mark of the Beast. These are the Christians who believe in the pre-tribulation rapture."

That is a lie. Read Revelation 14 regarding the 3 angels. They will proclaim the gospel and warn people regarding the mark so there is no such thing as them not knowing it.

Revelation 14 NIV
9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, 10 he, too, will drink of the wine of Gods fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.

When God tests us he's looking to see if we have learned the things we must learn in order to move forward. God does know what's in your heart and its true desires. Tests are a way to demonstrate to others that you are ready. In addition not all tests are bad. Some trials and tribulations are put in your path by the devil just as it happened to Job to sort of disprove to God ur spiritual process and growth. The more you hang in there the more you prove the devil wrong and make God proud of u. The end is very near and the gloves are off sort of speak. Last minute tallies are taking place to see who's truly worthy to partake in the kingdom of heaven.
---lori on 6/1/11

Trials and tribulations...Nothing will bring a true believer closer to God than trials and tribulations. Some may not realize this until you have grown enough to stop blaming God everytime all hell comes against you. Let God make you into what He wants you to be.

My heart goes out to those christians who will receive the mark. Christians will not know if they are taking the mark or not. They will not know until after they receive it. The pre-trib "christians" are blinded by the truth and will take the mark. Their belief in their doctrines are strong and are what will kill the two prophets mentioned in revelation because the prophets do not conform to the doctrines of denominational churches.

Donna66: "There are a number of different interpretation of last time events."

Yes, but there is only one interpretation and that is from God. Most other interpretaions are from denominational churches.

Donna66: "All the Christians that I know are determined not to take any mark..."

There are many christians who will unknowingly receive the Mark of the Beast. These are the Christians who believe in the pre-tribulation rapture.

A certain man, who believes in the pre-trib rapture, will take the mark of the beast thinking that this is not the mark of the beast because he will be raptured before the mark is handed out.
---Steveng on 3/19/09

There are a number of different interpretation of last time events. But few Christians are indifferent to the suffering of believers that has been prophesied.
All the Christians that I know are determined not to take any mark (or chip) in the forehead or hand. They watch the world becoming ever more evil.

But I see little value in predicting the next move of the NWO...we know they are at work... nor in delving into history for their beginnings.

Faith is built day by day.
We often do not have faith to meet a test UNTIL THE TEST.
Mat 6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day [is] the evil thereof.
---Donna66 on 3/18/09

The soon to come tribulation, the fire that will test your faith, is the ultimate test for the Christian of this generation. It will separate the true Christians from those who say they are Christians. It is for the last generation where love has waxed cold and terror has strongly gripped the world and who will witness the second coming of our Lord. May your faith be as strong as Job's during these trying times and that you put on the complete armor of God for your protection. Meet with others on a daily basis to keep your faith strong for the time is at hand.

Praying each of you and yours peace of mind, joy of spirit, good health and many great friends to share them with in the name of Jesus.

Those past "tests" turn out to be very valuable.
---Donna66 on 3/14/09

AMEN Donna, we LEARN through those tests, and also learn God will never leave or forsake. We learn to walk by the Faith of Christ in us. This is a mighty learning process. Often we fall through that learning process, but also learn God picks us up, dusts us off, and says...ok lets go again. He's teaching us how He wants to live HIS life through us.

Your comment reminds me of Psalms 105 too!!! You'll enjoy!!!
---kathr4453 on 3/17/09

Cliche, maybe. but true. I think there's an old song that says something like, "if I never had a problem, I'd never know that God can solve 'em". Sometimes, when I'm uncertain about something that lies ahead of me, it helps to remember similar anxious times in the past when God proved Himself faithful.
Then I can say to myself, "Well, He was with me during this hard time and in that difficulty and all those other times...surely He won't leave me now!

Those past "tests" turn out to be very valuable.
---Donna66 on 3/14/09

Great answer Donna66. I've also found as I grow that many times I have failed the test.

When we find ourselves saying OH NO! not again Why Lord Why? Its called the no child left behind program. He makes us KEEP taking it over and over until we do pass..then we go on to Another and another each one a little harder then before....Count it all Joy...we are being perfected.

God also tests us so we can prove His faithfulness. I know that sounds like a clich but it is true. He is Faithful!
---kathr4453 on 3/13/09

It's hard sometimes not to take the things that "test" us as punishment. But they are far from it. They are a chance for us to see where God wants us to be spiritually. We read the Word, we pray....then finally, like
a solicitous tutor, God gives us a test. Unlike the world, we can't fail if we do our best in light of what we have learned. God wants us to succeed. Indeed, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

God loves all of us. We all have to go through tests at some point in our life. In fact, Jesus even went through some! Remember the 40 days in the desert and the serpent tempting him? It's the test of God's love. Do we really put him first in our life? Also, it makes us remember that God is there and he will not leave us. If we didn't have tests then our spiritual journey to him would be so easy. Sadly, that's not how life is =] I like the tests because it makes me remember God.

In school,we take examination for promotion to the next class, in the same vain, God allows trials/testings to come our way for growth and/or promotion to the next level in our walk with Him. The righteousness of God is revealed from one faith to another. When I am standing right with God, and I encounter trials, then I stand firm, put my trust in God, for certainly if I do not draw back, I will overcome and move to the next level with God. I talk from experience!

Abrahams faith was proven as he followed through obeying the Lords commands, willingly sacrificing as God revealed to him. It must have taken every fiber of Abrahams faith to bind his grown son and place him on the altar. Laying Isaac on the altar, Abrahams faith was pushed beyond its perceived limits- past his own strength, forced onto total dependency on God. In the final act of raising the knife above his sons head, preparation to complete the command of sacrificing his son, showed that Abrahams faith was totally dependant on the Personhood of God- not his own strength. Just as Abraham found all his strength to obey in God, so we too in times of trials must place our whole dependency on Who our God is.

Very good Eloy. Testings are for our strengthening. And to let the believer see where he or she needs improvements. God already knows our weaknesses and strengths. The more I talk about Him, the more I "love Him".

Have you ever been in a situation where if God stretched you felt if God stretched you any farther, youd rip apart? What is it that allows us to cling to our Lord when all circumstances attempt to remove your foundation? Faith, which is defined by Hebrews 11:1 as the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. Through the testing of Abrahams faith by commanding the sacrifice of Isaac, God proves that He will fulfill His promises completely, despite the doubt that might arise in our minds. In times of trials and temptations when our faith is pushed beyond the reaches of our control, God is using our difficulties to strip us of all we hold dear so that we cling only to Him, our Holy Provider.

In the book of James it says God does ont test us. however God does look at our abilities, strengths, and does help build us up. We are the ones whom puts to omuch on our plates at time & then say "God is testing us" if we already do what he asks of us, which is not much, then we can be more aware.

Like a soldier in battle must be conditioned in order to combat the enemy in war and be triumphant, but the weak and unprepared soldier will perish quickly. God prunes the tree so more blossoms are produced, the grapes must be squashed in order to produce the wine. God wants victorious warriors whom stand up for righteousness and holiness, he does accept worthless and unprepared souls. Be hot or be cold, but the lukewarm is spit out of his mouth and trodden under foot of men, stale salt that has no use and good for nothing will be thrown into the fire along with the cold and the fruitless trees. Ahh yes, faith that moves mountains, that is pleasing to the Lord.
---Eloy on 6/27/08

Evil things come from the devil. If we are in sin, God hands us over to Satan to be taught a lesson. It is hoped that we prefer to obey God and live within His rules in future.

Sometimes, because the devil hates believers, he will attack them and the believer will say it came from God. This was Job's error. He thought God was doing all the bad things to him when it was the evil one. We should jump for joy when we are attacked by Satan, because we know he isn't happy with us.

Of course this can be difficult in all circumstances. But we are to give thanks never the less. The devil is under the authority of God. For the ultimate good of the believer, then, the devil can inflict believers with bad events.

The premise of this blog is flawed, it assumes that God makes bad things happen in order to test us. Christians confuse the distinction between temptations, tests, and trials. God does evaluate how we respond to circumstances. He gives specific directions so that we can prove our obedience (a God-test). However, what some are calling a test from God more accurately fits the definition of a temptation. Temptations are connected to mans lust. If one believes God orchestrates situations to bait us into sin or personal tragedy, then one has fallen into the trap. James instructed that we shouldnt say that God tempts us with evil. Dont imply that God is in partnership with evil in any way.

God does not cause bad things to happen to us,first of all. You have a very bad concept of God. Usually when bad things happen to us it is a result of our bad choices and reasoning. Then when things go bad ,we blame it on God or others. We never take responsibility for the wrong that we do.But God knows our hearts. Things that seem bad are not necessarily bad. I've been through the worst time in my life these past few weeks and just read the first 10 chapters of Job. I am really encouraged to find that its is satan, NOT God, who throws troubles our way. The test is for ourselves to prove to ourselves that God is able to take us through the fire. Rejoice in tribulations (James), because God is able and will bring us through if we TRUST Him. Hope this helps. -Silas

Sue, there are good things also. Some things you may perceive as bad in the short run, turn out to be good in the long run. I was in a bad car accident and in the short run, it was bad. In the long run, slowing down of my conscious thinking was good. There is a purpose for everything under the sun.
---gregg on 4/8/07

Sue, I believe what Gregg wrote down as what a test is correct. Of course many others are too. Now about bad things, God is the one that controls everything in the heavens and in the earth. If the devil test us, it is only because God allowed him to. Satan is not more powerful then God. He is the prince of the air but only while God lets him. His is already been defeated. God has a purpose in His thinking. all things are under submission to God. He can wipe out a nation in a second.

there is a way God tests our faith on a weekly basis, though many christians fail. The test of our treasures. In our finances. So many christians claim they don't tithe because God doesn't ask us for our money, but isn't that where Jesus said our treasure is? Of course God will test our treasure. Why is it that so many christians are more comfortable believing that God will test us by giving us sickness and even death rather than asking us to part with our hard earned cash in faith believing the word which says if you give your finances to God he will fill your cup to overflowing?
---lisa on 4/14/05

Bruce, Its hard to tell which position you are taking by the scripture you quoted. Nonetheless, that scripture, while saying we should glory in our tribulations, does not suggest God gives us bad things, so I'm not sure what point you are making through your comment? I'm sure we all believe the same thing, ie that God is Good and though He allows things to happen to us and indeed He tests our faithfulness to Him, He is not the giver of death and disease. This is the result of sin and satan. All in favour say I!

God does not make bad things happen to us, He will allow things to happen. I believe that God knows what is in our hearts alrealy, and He is just letting us see what is in our hearts. So we will grow more in our faith. He know everything about us. He is just revealing to us what we need to do to get closer to Him. Repent.

God allows 'testing', i think, not bec. he doesn't know us, but perhaps, for us to know about ourselves.

Read about the refiners fire, silver and gold. I believe that God does test us, to strengthen our faith.. Although I do believe that some bad things are from Satan. It would depend on the situation.

Romans 5:3-5, "And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."

But we must read carefully the question. Sue is asking why God tests us by making bad things happen to test us. This is a distortion of the facts. I agree God tests our faith by allowing things but there is a promise he will not allow more than we handle. So we know that this is God, but the "making bad things happen" is the incorrect belief, for example God doesnt make Cancer happen to us to teach us faith and patience. This is where the lie of the devil distorts the truth. Yes, he allows things but not more than we handle. There is a devil and he is the destroyer.

God DOES test us to show us that He is faithful in all of His word, we only have to believe that He is, and that He will keep us in everything that happens. Satan tempts us in an effort to make us stumble and fall, as he tried with Job, may we all like Job make Satan out to be the liar that he really is and Our Lord God to be ever true.

Our loving Heavenly Father tests us for our benefit and spiritual growth. He already knows what we will do under given situations...but we don't. At the time of a tragedy we are tested and then can clearly see our own heart convictions. Believe me, we may THINK we know what we believe...but in actuality we may discover a different opinion when we view a love of our life in the casket. God may reveal our true heart condition that we will seek him with our WHOLE heart, soul and mind. Matt 22:37-39
Satan tempt us to do or believe evil of God to ruin our lives and testimony.

After the test, besides having relief, you should have another revelation of God which you did not have before. God has a way of driving us to our knees when we need it, and even eating the dust of death if necessary, nevertheless it's all for good and it's for his glory.
