Help To Lose 120 Pounds

I have been overweight for many years. I've tried a million diets. I'm contemplating having weight loss surgery.Is it wrong for Christians to risk such a thing? I'm not "sick", but I believe I will be if I don't do something drastic about my extra weight (I'm 120 lbs. overweight). Advice?

The best way to lose weight is to increase physical activity, even walking daily will increase your heart rate, and decrease eating. I would not recommend surgery, many have regretted that decision and their lives have become worse than what it was before the surgery.

Dear Abby:

I believe that humans are comprised of mind, spirit and body. When one of these elements loses stability, all 3 are affected.

It is difficult to be a spiritual dynamo when one's body is suffering or ill. It is, therefore, important for us to get "the temple" back into shape so we can serve The Lord with all our might.

Remember, all things in moderation and look for BALANCE in your life. For reasons unknown to me and perhaps to you as well, your excessive body weight has caused you to lose BALANCE (and you are not the only one).

Many problems within the human experience can be traced back to the mouth. If we can conquer the mouth, what goes in and out, we can be better stewards of God's gifts.

Tom2, I can fully relate to your problem. Since I started having to take blood pressure med. over 10 yrs ago, I've gained 80 lbs. My eating habits haven't increased still the weight continues to climb. The only way to drop a few lbs is to completely fast & of course that's limited if you want to live so there you have it. God says we can ask anything in His name & He'll answer, maybe we should ask Him to improve our health to where med's are not needed & to take this excess weight off for us. Any one tried this? If so, tell us how things turned out.

If you ever listen to any advice on weight loss...listen to me.

I don't care if your hypothalamus is on the fritz or you suffer from "father hunger", it matters not. What does matter is that you learn self control. And, yes, this is a spiritual exercise.

Your surgery may seem to help because the surgeon is doing stuff to you, but that won't cure you. Unless your issue is a confirmed medical condition, it is probably an issue of self control.

All the surgeries in the world won't help you if you cannot conquer SELF CONTROL.

Try to fast one day out of the week and only eat two meals a day (light supper) and within one year, you will have hit your target.

i was diadnosed with a cardiomyopathy 10 years ago,after several years of weight gain,and am now some 70 pounds overweight. have been trying and i believe am finally gonna make it down to 200 in about 6 months. its hard especially when medication needed such as beta blockers, and ace inhibitors has so slowed your metabolism that even looking at food causes weight gain.

I too am 120lbs overweight.Along with many other issues had made me insecure and depressed.I have done tons of research on dieting and workouts.My advice is to join a gym and concentrate on cardio exercises. Do eliptical, it is low impact and starts you in the right track to conditioning your body for more intense exercises later.

You do have a lot of weight to lose but do pray and ask the Lord for guidance. I don't feel it is wrong to have the surgery. Christians are people too. That much weight is going to hurt you soon. Please do something before it is too late. God bless you dear.

I had gastric bypass surgery because I was close to dying because being diabetic made it virtually impossible to lose weight and since my surgery 10/10/03 I have lost over 200 pounds and it saved my life...is it wrong for Christians to risk this? NO...sometimes we need a helping hand and I was no exception...now I have no health issues, no more diabetic medications or shots and I have more energy and stamina than I know what to do with...so praise God it was a help to me and don't you ever let anyone tell you otherwise...write me if you want to discuss this further...

I would suggest you get blood work done to test the T4 thyroid.I was told most of my life I didn't have a problem and then one day they said my thyroid wasn't working at all!I started meds,lost 70 lbs that yr.I still have to take meds to regulate it.If your thyroid isn't working,weightloss is a losing battle.Check it...then trust the Lord day by day..or hr by hr.And give the emotional stuff to Him and don't eat over it.Pray that He will put you on the correct path for your particular body/situation.

Thou shalt have none other gods before me Deut 5:7-10,As Christians we must lead our selves into total submission to God over our inequity.Including all our compulsions, weakness, tempations,addictions or whatever we would like to call them.

Obesity Is NOT a sin! There are different reasons that people may be overweight. But I will say that most of the time if a person is obese it is because of too much food. I thought that I had a thyroid problem once or a really slow metabolism, but it was me, I was eating too much, but at least it was something that I could bring under control. It works! Eat less (really a little sacrifice) and lose weight and feel good and look good and most of all live healthier. The Lord bless all of us in this!

Madison,we are on the same page.I said obesity is gluttony and it's (gluttony) a sin.I understand there are a million reasons why people are fat but the bottom line is that we are fat because we eat too much which is nothing less than gluttony, not knowing when to say stop, no self control. It's hard looking in the mirror and admitting that rather than hiding behind some modern trumped up term or excuse for our "obesity", "weight challenged" or whatever else we like to call it. FAT IS FAT IS FAT and too much fat in our body ultimately KILLS US same as NO EXERCISE.

Lisa: While I agree with you that if one follows a healthy diet and exercise plan one can lose weight, I totally disagree that obesity is sin. Gluttony is sin. Obesity is the consequence of sin. They are different.

I am 120 pounds over weight myself. I know why. I have an eating disorder and have eaten improperly. The weight is not the sin. The eating is.

I have been told to consider surgery, but know that the surgery will not fix the emotional problems that I eat over. I have to let God heal me and obey His will for me where food is concerned.

God created you unique for a special purpose, but not 120lbs overweight. He still loves and forgives! Sin would be STILL not accepting yourself as God's creation. You're forgiven start brand new body, mind, spirit. Surgery is sinful only if void of developing a deep love relationship with God for renewal of mind and spirit too. Lean into Him, depending on Him for your comfort and peace (no longer turning to food). His power can control your desires. Our body is the temple to be pure, and healthy. Not for selfish ambition 'to look good in the world's standards' but rather to please God!

I am too heavy too. If we start walking now, and go about a half hour, (when we get ready we can step it up to more), every other day, I will go with you. It is nice out and we will feel better. (3) Obesity is gluttony for sure and its a sin no less or no more than the others. Our bodies are God's temple. I know this is hard to hear but it is the truth and will set you free. We get fat for a number of different reasons. Having the operation will not eliminate all those reasons. They are the real issue and we've all got to face the ugly truth about ourselves. If you are depressed, the op won't remove that, but seratatonin excretion through exercise will help and you'll love yourself more.

I know what I have KEPT DOING WRONG CONSISTENTLY and that's overeat (particularly comfort foods that feel good in the mouth and taste yummy but calorie loaded) and stopped being active. Dear Abby, you saying "I have tried exercising" leads me to believe that you TRIED it, just like a new diet, and then gave it up. There's your problem (or at least a major part of it). Our bodies, designed by God, were made to move and if they're not moving through exercise every day of our lives, we will get fat, and believe me I'm struggling with weight issues now. Abby, I know not all diets work the same for different people, but, you might try what my wife has done. She has cut out almost all starches, but, still eats enough other things such as meats, vegetables, etc. and has lost about 63 lbs. in less than a year. She did this on her own without any prompting from me,in fact, I told her that I would never say anything critical to her about her weight, even though I do care about her health, I told her she would have to try to lose the weight for herself, that I love her just the way she is.

Hi Abby, I know many Chrisians who've had the procedure with no problems and severe complications. Go to seminars-talk to patients for pro/con info. Check accredited doctor's track record! (who REQUIRES PostOpt support meeting/psychological testing PreOpt). What need is fed by overeating - not always hunger. This surgery is definitely not a quick-fix. You will never eat the same, your body will definitely change(inside & out), and you will take vitamins for the rest of your life. Go Armed with an abundance of information & support. Dear Me,

I have read Dr. Phil and the Carbohydrate Addict. Both talk about adding vitamins and minerals and even chromium in small amounts to help regulate the insulin running around in my body. There is Slimfast; I get nutrition but seem to be skipping a meal. But silly me, I tried to go it alone and the weight came back. Everyone of the ideas on the other BLOG(S) about diet ideas is really helpful. Even prayer helps. Time to have a serious talk with a doctor.
Life is great but I'm overweight. Thanks for another diet idea. Surgery sounds too scary for me.

Have you been to your doctor and had bloodwork to check for hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). It effects your metablism and many other functions of the body. Eat high fiber cereal, whole gain bread, fruits, and veggies. Little or no sweets and no greasy foods, like chips and fried foods. Eat small portions and more often. When you go without eating your metablism shuts down because it wants to concerve the food you ate last. Take walks. Drink water, milk, or juice instead of pop. Green tea is good for you. Take it easy on the salt. All things in moderation.

Thank you all for your responses. I wish it was as easy as "stop eating sugars" and "eat every other day". These things come from those who have never had a weight problem! lol I have diabetes and cannot skip days of food. Yes, I have tried exercising. This isn't new to me. I have fought the weight for over 15 years. I wasn't asking for diet advice, just asking if using surgery to help with my health is acceptable as a Christian.

Eat only good healthy foods, no caffine, no chips or junk food, cut out all fried foods and eat in moderation.
Do NOT skip meals as this makes you hungrier and that is whern you will cheat and eat the wrong things. eat little snacks through the day (carrot,celery sticks, apples, oranges, fruits and fresh vegies). Losing weight is a way of life not a diet where you do something for a short while and when it doesn't work you try something else. Eat healthy and excersize daily as a new way of living.

I do not want to loose my friend either. get on a search engine and look up "back to the garden". It is great, great, great. I can't stress it enough.

Having things like gastric bypass or stomach stapling may get rid of the problem of gaining any more weight, but the problem could be you are not eliminating properly or inflammation of the organs. My advice is to get something to move the bowels more, get a colon cleaner, and eliminate as many sugars from your diet.
