Must One In Every Family Be Pastor

Having a father who has been in the ministry/pastoring a church for many many years until was called backhome in heaven, Is it really "expected" or is it really a "must" that among his 2 children (boy & girl) one should go into the ministry or should be a pastor also?

Not unless God has called either one to preach. If God didn't call them to preach, I wouldn't preach, I would ask God what he has planned for them.

No,it isn't a "must" one of you become a minister.Unless God calls you to a ministry you shoud never do it out of your own power, for it is too small to do the Work God calls ministers to do.Only the call and annointing power of God for the ministry should be the determining factor in becoming any type of minister.Let the leading of God be your only guide.Never tradition ,custom, or what others think.

Where did that idea come from? No, being a pastor is not something that is passed on from generation to generation. At one time a son did practice the trade of the family. But, this has never been true of a pastor. This is a person called of God to serve in this position.

Only God can "call" a person into any form of work, Christian or secular. To just feel a family obligation to enter the ministry is leaving God out of the decision. (Not only leaving God out, the person who does this will be unsatisfied and do a poor job.) Sometimes, children almost feel they should "follow their father's footsteps." This is only acceptable if God is leading you to do this.

Dear Kharole: Your question sounds like it is coming from some church doctrine or human expectation rather than Scripture. We are "called" by God and not man for our purpose in life. Read Jeremiah 29:11 and also Rick Warren's "The Purpose Driven Life". We are NOT born on earth without God having a specific reason for our earthly existence! ALL believers are called to service or some kind of ministry in one form or another. Blessings!

We are all to use OUR OWN gifts to the glory of God NOT follow in someone else's footsteps even if they are family. Just because Father was pastor does not mean others in family have this gifting.
Use what God has given YOU not what God gave your father.

Absolutely not! Those called into that area of ministry are called by Christ Eph 4 not men. God has a call on your life and you have a ministry, as everyone does. You need to walk in your giftings and work for the Kingdom of God, wether it be in business, or whatever vocation you are gifted for. I as a minister do not expect my children to become a pastor like me, but a minister like God has them to be.

No you feel free to do what you want to do but hopefully it will an opportunity for you to be a blessing to many people.

Only God thru the Holy Spirit can call someone to the ministry. It is not EXPECTED of anyone. I think RCs feel that at least one person from a family should be a priest or nun (I may be wrong), but no..not unless there is a distinct calling by God.

No, we are called by God into his choosing of occupation. Follow God's will for your life, and don't listen to those around you that tell you otherwise. I would not want anyone to be a Pastor simply because people expected it of him. It's alot of responsibility and should not be put into the wrong hands regardless the reason.

The ministry is a calling from the Holy Spirit. It is not like a 9-5 job. You are in God's duty 24/7/365 doing tasks that have an effect on people lives and souls. You should talk to God seriously before making a lukewarm committment. You have first hand knowledge of the pluses and minuses of the family life of a minister and his daily duties. God Bless you in your decision as ther are many who could be crippled or healed by your decision

To say that the son of a pastor must himself be a pastor is a reversion to Judaism, where the priethood was inherited by descent from Aaron. Statments from ancient Church Councils say the same thing.

Hi There
In Pr 22:6 It says To train up a child in the way HE should go.....not the parents, so if you don't feel that calling on you life from God, then find out what is your hearts desire...May the Word of God set you free and that you not come under false expectation. Be Blessed...raewy4549
