How To Become Near To God

I could feel that God is very, very far way. I tried praying but I could not feel His presence. Do I have to submit to confession? Do I need a priest, pastor, rabbi, or monk to bless me so that I would be near to God again?

Oh, absolutely not! I do not like it when God seems distant, and I complain everytime. Not long and He shows up. Tell Him that you want to be closer to Him. Actually, I could never be close enough to God. The closer I am to Him the more of Him I want. It is a constant hunger, THAT ONLY GOD CAN FILL. He does a great job of doing that, otherwise, I believe that I would lose it. Enjoy your God and your Savior

I have felt this way before. I read what he said in his word and remind me that he will never leave me nor forsake me. You don't need anyone to bless you. I never did understand that. When you pray you need to clear your mind, have not only your mind but your heart on God. I do know that sins that are unforgiven can hinder your relationship with God, I'm not saying that your sinning on purpose, but ask God to search your heart.

Certainly Not!

You need to spend time in SERIOUS PRAYER and Bible reading.

Prayer is our talking to God and His written Word is Him speaking to us. God will bring to your memory things He has shown you in His Word but you must read it first.

Spend two hours a day in prayer and study and see if He doesn't speak and fellowship with you.

How to draw near to God? I have to be honest. For me it just happened. God has done alot for me. He won't let go, for one thing. It has been God. He called me into a close relationship. What can I say?
---catherine on 4/25/07

The best way to come near to God is be honest with God not religious, even when you make mistakes and have struggles. Relationship with God is not something that you feel all the time. It is a commitment of consistancy for a relationship in the good as well as the bad. God's Grace (unmerited favor) will help you in weakness, until you become delivered and learn how to submit willingly to his love. Remember he loves you even while you struggle and will not cast you out but will help you!

The best is to go on your knees, every morning as soon as you woke up and to open your heart to Jesus Christ. To talk to Him, like a best friend, who sees, knows, hears everything that you say, think and do. Confess to Christ daily, read your Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and the relationship will grow.

We dont need anyone to go to God for us.He could be telling you wait.Or testing you,to build your faith.Keep praying and your Pastor could pray with you.If it where Me I would go into my secrect place, and get go my knees, and ask him to show me if I have done something wrong, that I would feel he has turned his face from me.
God bless you in your walk

I want to thank each and everyone for the responses. I have downloaded, printed and studied the verses you shared with me. The verses, ideas and words have comforted me, and pushed me to do things to be able to be near to God again. Thank you.

Babeth, Simply pray " God I want to be near you. Pls show me the things that are keeping me away from you. Talk to me and draw me nearer to you". And read the Bible and see how He will answer you. Find a Godly person to share your feelings with and who will pray for & with you as you find your way to the Lord. You are blessed!I am so excited to hear your results.

You have the very best Priest in Jesus--Hebrews 7:17 & 21, 8:1-2. Now read Hebrews 10:16-25. Remember that feeling is distinct from faith. Christians may feel far away from Him. Job experienced this feeling and put it into words. His friends completely missed his faith and judged by his feelings. Faith is founded on His word, His promise. He is faithful. Praise Him. Will be glad to share more if desired--wayne8738.

God said in the bible, " Draw nigh unto Me and I will draw nigh unto you." God is close to you at all times but you need faith to believe He's there. The bible also says " I am with you alway even unto the end of the world." Make praying and reading the bible a part of your daily spiritual walk with Him. Good luck.

First, if you are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ, God is in you. You may have to come into obedience with God. You have to Submit to God. You need to ask God to open your eyes, open your ears, unsear your mind and rebuke the enemy.... The enemy can block your mind from hearing God. That is why you must seek to come into obedience.
---Amy on 6/4/05

do NOT need priests, rabbi and certainly NOT monks for God to hear US. Christ died for us and GAVE us a DIRECT LINE. Talk to God as you would talk to a best friend. Continue to pray and seek God through his word. Just because you do not feel something big does not mean God is not there with you because HE IS THERE ALL THE TIME. Pray in a forest or near a stream or somewhere where you can see and feel God through beauty of his creation. He hears you and is there.

Rebecca, there is no such thing as a dry spell to a child of God, for God is perfect love, and we should always feel his Holy Spirit Presence when we pray. Sin will separate a person from the Holy God, so the poster is right, confession and repentance are in order to close the gap and reestablish the right relationship. Wanting Jesus and praying for this ALWAYS does good, for Jesus promises that whosoever comes to him he will in no way cast out. Please read Romans 10:13.

Praise God.Do it for all He has done for you with words.Sing songs of praise unto Him.The Bible says God inhabits the praise of His people. You invite Him in and surrender to Him in praise.Praise brings God to you and you to Him.Tell Him He's wonderful, glorious, mighty, great.Any word to tell Him you love Him and know His position as King of Kings,Lord of Lords, how great He is.Do it at home alone, you need no one to intercede for you.If you've sinned ask God to forgive you before you praise.Just you and Him.

You have been brought nigh by the blood of Jesus.

Bebeth, one thing you can be sure of, when you feel God is far away, you can know that He is very close, it is you who is far away and as it is you who moved, you can return. There is a psalm and a song that reads, we enter his gates with thanksgiving in our hearts, and enter His courts with praise, so giving thanks gets you into His gates, giving Him praise gets you into the intimate courts of God. Do this then when you pray 1. thanksgiving, 2. praise. 3. you are there.
---lisa on 6/3/05

Eloy I know you mean well by saying that. but that won't do a bit of good if a person's heart really isn't in the prayer. A person can say that all they want but if the person's heart isn't in it and if God isn't dealing with that person this prayer or any prayer won't do a bit of good. I think she is like the rest of us and going through a dry spell. Even Jesus went through this while on the cross. She needs to have a one on one with Jesus. She is already saved, just going through a dry spell.

You are saved by grace through faith. John 3:16 Eph 2:8,9 Acts 16:30,31 Born again and saved are the same thing. You are spiritually reborn when you receive Jesus as your saviour. Jn 3:3-8
Jesus makes intercession to the Father for us. Pray to God the Father in Jesus name in faith believing. Luke 11:9-13 Jn 14:13-17
Jn 16:23-24 James 1:6 1Jn 5:14-15
Romans 8:26,27,34 Luke 9-13

Our relationship with God is not based on feelings. It is not about what we have/have not done or how we feel. It is about what the Lord God has said he has done and will do. "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you WILL be saved."(Rom 10:9) No matter how we may feel at any given time, God's word will not change.

Pray: Lord Jesus, I confess, I admit that I am guilty of doing wrong. Please forgive me. Forgive me Father, forgive me Jesus, and forgive me Holy Spirit, for sinning against you. Lord Jesus, Save me. Please come into my heart and into my life and take over. Thank you for dying on the cross in my place, so that I can be saved. Lord, convert me, and make me a real born-again Christian, and fill me with your Holy Spirit. Lord Jesus, cover me with your blood, and keep me saved. In Jesus I pray. Amen.

I've been a born-again Christian for quite a few years, and I thought I was pretty close to our Lord; but approximately 6 weeks ago, I started a Bible Study in a church...the study is called "Jesus, the One and Only" by Beth Moore...this is just so precious, I have no words to describe it...but it certainly has brought me closer to our Lord...and I feel I know him on a very personal basis. Please give this study a try...I promise you will love it. Loving & praying for you,

Bebeth, remember one thing the Holy Spirit lives inside us and God is the same yesterday, today and forever. He will never leave us nor forsake us that is his promises to us. Be still and mediate upon his words. Sing praises to the Lord and you will sense that He is here and so is his presence.AMEN. You are already bless by the Lord.

Make time to read his word according to your need ans ask him to give you the faith to believe and to act accordingly or to help you be patient and trusting even though he may feel like a long way away.
God bless!

All of us go through dry times. When we think God has left us, He is indeed closest to us. Have faith! Pray, cry out to Jesus to come close again, ask God to show any sin that is separating you from Him, confess, change your ways, read the Word, and He shall be in your awareness again. He longs to be known to us! Remember, Jesus is always with you if you are born-again and trying to follow His way. That is why He died for us. God lays His hands upon us to bless us everyday if we permit Him to do so.

I finished reading about the penitant Psalms - there are 7.
These and 1 John 1:9 are extremely helpful for a few moments of introspection.

Model prayer - Matthew 6:5-15
Starts praising God for His character
Alines our desires to God's will for us.
Asks for life's essentials
Seeks forgiveness
Seeks courage to avoid temptation
And finally acknowledges that where there is a king(God) there is a kingdom(God's)

The fact that you are asking this question, causes me to wonder what was your basis of being "close to God" before. If you somehow think that "confession" or any man has anything to do with it, I wonder if you understand just what it is to be a Christian? or more specifically how to become a Christian. If you would like, please write me and we can talk about it.
