Spiritual adultery is to apostate, to abandon what one has professed to believe, or who one has professed to believe in, spiritually. It is idolatry, a blatant willful violation of the first and second commandments, resulting from covetousness, image worship, or paying homage to, or giving reverence and honor to any object based on ones sensual perceptions of the object. Whatever absorbs ones mind, or consumes ones thoughts, is for that one, their God. Idol worship is an abomination to the Father of life, and because the adulterer "does not like to retain God in their knowledge, God [eventually gives] them over to a reprobate mind.
---joseph on 11/19/14

Spiritual sexual immorality is commonly warned against in Bible.

Christians are married to Christ, Eph 5:32
We're one spirit with the Lord, 1Cor 6:17.

To forsake him for another is spiritual sexual immorality. Who is the other that scripture so often warns against?

It's Hagar, who is symbolic for righteousness by works of the law, Gal 4:24.
Either we're saved by grace, submitting to God's righteousness by believing on Jesus, OR, we're under the law determining our righteousness by works.

We cannot mix grace (married to Christ), with works (rejecting Christ by seeking to establish our own righteousness), Rom 11:6.

To mix grace with works is lukewarm, and it's spiritual adultery.
---Haz27 on 11/8/14

Yes, I sure can.

If I gave into the seducing spirits of the 3 persons godhead religion, those that worship the gods buddha, hindu, moony, other etc, I will be be committing spiritual adultery.

If the definition of "Spiritual adultery" is what kathr and Miche are saying, then they have been commiting that sin for a long time and saying, lets all get along and they would be cowards. If the definition is true, then every Christian who has a different interpretation of any doctrine is doing the same thing. And as far as I'm concern not too many are agreeing with another. That would mean everyone is committing Spiritual Adultery. Philippians 3 nowhere mentions "Spiritual Adultery" Not one word on the subject.
We as Christian can grieve the Holy Spirit when we refuse many times the Spirit's leading us to one direction and we refuse. In time God chastizes us and we get corrected.

Spiritual Adultery is compromising Truth with false doctrine and just looking the other way saying...lets all get along, it doesn't matter etc.

AND those who do because they want to be POPULAR and are afraid to SUFFER for the sake of the Gospel are COWARDS of which God said Cowards WILL NOT enter the Kingdom of God...

Committing spiritual adultery is any Christian who is attending church and professing to love the God and still lusts after foreign gods (openly/secretly) via these methods: reading horoscope, calling the psychic hotline, reading books that promotes witchcraft, consulting spiritualist , voodoo or fetish priests and mediums for guidance or participating in any occultic clubs etc., etc.,

Anyone practicing such should repent because such persons heart is not loyal to God, otherwise he/she will be judged. God will not give answers to such persons prayers Jeremiah 15:1-2. Joshua 24:19-20 (If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you). Be holy!

What do you think easter and Christmas is?
They are not inthe bible, and both coem to us via pagan idol worship
---francis on 3/3/10

Excellent Point Francis!

Since these are both Pagan Holidays. Decreed to be Christian by the Pagan Emperor Constantine in 300A.D. (NOT G-D)

Christmas is the holiest pagan holiday in worship of the gods of lights and burning of the Yule Log to appease the gods.

Easter is the worship of the Goddess Ister(The Goddess of the rising Sun) You would go on a Mountain and have a sunrise Worhship Service as she rises from the sea (Sounds Familar?).

When we are made righteous by Christ, it's not because we earned it, but because we have been reconciled to God through Christ works on the cross and His resurrection.

Christians commit righteousness. period.
---Eloy on 3/8/10

Francis
Easter is in the N-Testament Acts 12 v 4. What most carnal christians do is celebrate it with e-eggs, e-bunnies & the such like. Now for a christmas tree is here Jere.10 v's 3-4 is what some heathen gentiles do.
Trin-gentiles started spiritual adultery with the rrc the mother apostate church in their worship Mary the mother of Jesus, then continues with their trin-teachings of 2-3 god's & or persons in a god-head. There is NO scriptures that support such.
This Is where trin-teachings started Matt.15 v 9, 2nd.Cor.11 v's 14-15, ends up here Rev.17 v's 4-6, to the Judgment seat of God & then onto the lake of fire.
---Lawrence on 3/5/10

The word "spiritual adultery" may apply as well, since worship of Mary is unfaithfullness to Christ. Especially in the OT, The Bible frequently uses "adultery" as a metaphore for those who worship false gods.

Exd 20:3 "Thou shall have no other gods before me"
---Donna66 on 3/3/10

mi ma, I think you mean spiritual IDOLATRY.

You said: Those who worship Mary are guilty of spiritual adultery.

I think you meant to say spiritual idolatry, not adultery.

Definition of ADULTERY: "Unfaithfulness of a married man to his wife or his wife to him, Voluntary sexual intercourse by a married man with a woman not his wife, or by a married woman with a man not her husband."

Those who worship Mary are guilty of spiritual adultery. In fact those who worship anything other than the Lord Jesus Christ are guilty of spiritual adultery.
Now being guilty of spiritual adultery does not exclude you are being saved. First John 2:2," And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." But Spiritual adultery can easily blind a person from the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. And that blindness can prevent us from every coming to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Idolatry is an spiritual adultery. This does not mean you worship images alone. Sometimes it take a rule when you put something no. 1 in your life other than God.
Example are money, husband, celebrity etc....Teachings that are not following exactly what the bible teaches are spiritual adultery too.

Spiritual adultery maybe the mixing of religions. For e.g. you say you are a christain but your into the occult or mysticism. Do you carry a lucky charm intead of putting your faith in God. When you play bingo, how many lucky charms or idols do you set above your card for good luck? It's nice to be friendly to someone, but you can't accept their religion or join it with yours. Pope beware. Be faithful to Yeshua!
---Kyaa on 2/16/10

John 3:16 For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten ([a]unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life. God is a loving and merciful God. But NOBODY enters the gates of Heaven because they are a good person. You enter based on your trust, belief and acceptance by grace of God's son Jesus. Any other reason is a FALSE doctrine. It is not based on religion but an intimate personal relationship with God. Please be very careful with believing things that are not based on His word. The difference is life and death.

Isaiah said that in the end times Israel would play the part of a harlot, he says that they left there 1st love and depend on others and things of there own devise's,
However he goes on to say that they will call upon the name of the Lord when a 1/3 of then are removed/killed and God shows the world, that he is God and by his hand Israel is saved, Not for there sales, but for HIS names sake!

If you read much of the Old Testament, you will frequently hear God accusing His people, the Hebrews, of this sin.

There, He's not talking about them lusting after someone elses wife. He means that though they have pledged loyalty to Him as their God, they began to worship other heathen gods or simply other people and goods that they put ahead of Him in their hearts.

Christians are even more prone to this kind of adultery than the sexual kind.

Spiritual Adultery or adultery of the heart is mentioned by Jesus as LUST. If you look with lust at someone, you have committed adultery. Also Jesus said that if you are angry with someone or hate someone, you commit MURDER in your heart. God looks at your thoughts, intensions, motives, and heart. He will judge every word, thought, and action whether good or bad - even the secret/hidden ones.

Yes a Christian can commit spiritual adultery. And I openly confess to being guilty of this sin. Maybe not this morning yet but certainly within the past week. I do not believe that I'm alone in my guilt. But be of good cheer if you have received the Lord Jesus Christ and are depending on his shed blood to cover your sins then that sin also covered. Praise the Lord!!!!!!!
---mima on 8/25/09

Yes, If a married person has LUST in their hearts, they have committed Adultry already,
and need to repent and ask God for forgivness.
And remember, to "Lust" is when you have "sexual thoughts" about a person other than your wife, and that goes for the wives too.

Isa4:1 And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

The seven women are the false churches in the world who do not want to take on the garments of Christ, or eat the spiritual bread of Christ. They simply want to wear his name to take away their reproach. In other words, they want to do their own thing, preach their own beliefs, but do not submit themselves to the scriptures.

Mr7:7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Spiritual adultery Is when Man is saying there is 2-3 persons & or god's in a god-head.
God's Word says there Is One Only One God. Hear Oh Israel the Lord our God Is One Lord.
The man constantine(the first pope)who devised r-catholocism started these Man-made trin-teachings. The light that came to him that done such is, 2nd. Cori.11 v's 14-15.
---Lawrence on 8/24/09

Spiritual Adultery is forsaking of the Holy Spirit for carnal ideas, false doctrines, forsaking the The new testament for the old, following Judaism rather than Obeying the Gospel, serving legalistic ideas rather than being led of the Holy Spirit. If you walk in the flesh rather than the Spirit you are in Adultery because you love the things God hates and are a flesh whormonger.

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
---exzucuh on 7/23/09

To commit spiritual adultery is to leave the pure worship of Yahweh as Commanded in The first commandment, (Ex: I am Yahweh thy God, Thou shall have no other God's before me.) Leaving Yahweh worship for Jesus worship! Fact is Jesus isn't even the true name of the Saviour. Jesus is 8 times translated from Yahshua. Yahshua means Yahweh is salvation in Hebrew. This was The Messiah's saving name. It was translated as follows. Yahshua, Yeshua, Yehosha, Y'shua, Ieosus, Iesus, Hesus and finally Jesus. This is the big deception. See there is a Satanic God named Esus who hates and tortures Humans. Esus is known as Lord, Master, and Hesus. Jesus was not Christ's name. You have been warned.

Spiritual Adultery could well mean serving any other God than YAHWEH.
---Carla3939 on 10/18/08

As the Bride of Christ, the church (Holy Spirit filled people of all faiths plus the poor plus those who are handicapped, homeless, wrongfully put in jails, persecuted, etc) (in short GOOD people) would be committing adultery by knowingly worshipping false idols. Here I would excuse many Catholics who do not know the significance of the circular eucharistic wafer and many other things. The Bible is clear that Good people go to Heaven and Evil people go to Hell. It does not matter what faith if any they are. So you could be a very kind, humane, atheist, who kept the Commandments and you would be acceptable to God, because you did what He wanted.
---frances008 on 10/17/08

To adulterate =to make less purer by inserting something. not pure.Truth is spoken by God. is pure and Solid in its authenticity.any thing added or removed is to lessen the integrity of Gods word.In any form spoken by God by way of false interpretation is spiritual Adultery. IMHO.That is why the sexual bliss is tarnished by a third party intervention.as the 2 in one flesh edict is disrupted."what God hath JOINED do not put asunder."Hence a commandment of God.
---Mic on 10/17/08

Mic, you should know, if you read the Prophets, that fornication is a metaphor for idol-worship (going after false gods). Apostacy presumes that you were once in the church of Christianity. You need to 'Come out of her, my people'. (The RCC is the female)

---Mic on 10/10/08

God's Word & says, there is No god before me
& none after me I know Not any. MAN says there is (2 other gods & or persons in God head, this Not scriptural). Believing that there is more than One god & or persons in heavenly throne, this IS spiritual adultery. God does Not need the help of 2 other god's & or persons in heavenly matters,God & He Alone does it ALL by Himself.
It was catholocism(the first trinity church)that started this spiritual adultery mess along with their idol worship. Matt 15 v 9.
---Lawrence on 10/10/08

Spiritual Adultry is when a person makes their first love another person, place, or something else other than God.

Mathew 22:37

The first Commandment.

Thou shalt Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

If you search your heart and you find that you love your mother, father, child etc...
more that you Love God, then pray that God would put a Passion in your heart for him
so that you will love him more than anything else. Otherwise, you are committing spiritual adultrey. He is a kind God and will give you this passion/Love if you ask for it,and he will wait on you to obtain it...

I know this for a fact.

---Leslie on 1/7/07

Pam: The Lord compares his relationship with His people to a marriage. His people committ"spiritual adultery" when they prefer man's traditions to God's commandments. In REV, we have the image of a pure woman = true church. Then there is the image of a harlot, drunk with the blood of the saints which were killed because they honored God's will rather than man's traditions. So Spiritual Adultery is to embrace the false doctrines/practices of any church that teaches untruths.
---Pierr7958 on 6/16/05

It seems most everyone believes 'spiritual' adultery is an act of the carnal mind or heart after something carnal, that is adultery against one's husband or wife, and God 'indirectly', If You're One Of His. In the case of 'scriptural/spiritual' adultery, God says it best Himself through His prophet Jeremiah, it's sinning against Him directly, plain and simple, If You're One Of His! [Jer.3:1>25;Lke.13:1>5 and in Many other scriptures]!
---Elishama on 6/12/05

Spiritual adultery is committed via the heart; it's an emotional act as opposed to the physical. Jimmy Carter once said that he had had" lust in my heart" and openly apologized for this. That's spiritual adultery.
---Heather on 6/9/05

Yes one can commit spiritual adultery. When we think more of the worldy things than we do spiritual things. God is a jelous God, he doesn't want to be second, third, ect but first in all things. We are married to Christ, and he told us that we was not of this world, but if we take part of being with the world, and do worldy things, to me that is spiritual adultery. Now we can enjoy life, we should, but not being "of" the world.
---Rebecca_D on 6/8/05

I believe the blogger "Paul" has caught the intended meaning of the phrase. A number of passages (e.g. Ephesians 5:22-34) liken the disciple's relationship with Christ to that of a husband and wife. Of course, the best place to ask this is not here, but to ask the person who said it, what THEY mean by it.

I was looking up the defination for spirtual adultery and this is what I found:SPIRITUAL ADULTERY -- Idolatry, covetousness, and apostasy are spoken of as spiritual adultery (Jer. 3:6,8,9; Ezek. 16:32; Hos. 1:2:3; Rev. 2:22). An apostate church is an adulteress (Isa. 1:21; Ezek. 23:4,7, 37), and the Jews are described "an adulterous generation" (Matt. 12:39) (compare Rev. 12.) I'd say even obsessions or addictions can count; anything that takes away from our time with God.

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of eyes and the pride of life - is not of the Father but is of the world.
And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. I John 2:15-17

Hey Pam, the short answer is yes you can, and Im afraid we all do so. (Check out the first part of Hosia). The thing is that marriage is a picture of Christ and the church. So when we sin (submit to anything other than Jesus (be that self or society or whatever)) we ate, in fact whoring ourselves to them. Second - Mt.5:28 "That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery" Christian does not do it physical but spiritual. So Christian can commit "Spiritual Adultery through any sin. Eph5:27 "Neither give place to the devil". Mth 10:37 - do not love people more than God, but Luk 10:27 "love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all your soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind"

When you get saved, the Bible uses marriage as a means to understand your relationship with God. You committed your life to Him like you would in marriage to mate. As you committ adultery in marriage to mate, you committ adultery to God. By loving false gods and idolizing them and not giving God Your whole heart.
