How Do I Know God's Will

I am in prayer about a big change that I could make in my life. I want this change very much, but how do I know for certain that it is God's will as well? Someone told me to look for signs from God, but I'm unsure if my desire to make this change will hamper my ability to hear God's will for my life.

I am there also. For me is, do I feel Gods peace about the situation. do you have peace that this is in step with God? God works with what we give Him to work with. I know how it is to not be looking in the direction God is working and not see it. where do you see God working?

Anna ... you are right to beware of wishful thinking. Sometimes this masquerades as God's words to you.
---Alan_of_U.K. on 5/12/07

First thing is to see if what you want lines up with God's word. God will never tell you to do something that does not line up with scripture. If it contradicts scripture it is not his will, Secondly make sure that you are in his word and praying diligently.
I read Joyce Meyers "how to hear from God"
It helped me alot.

Anna, When I came back from my misssion assignment in Africa I faced an importnt choice to go to the Seminary to earn a MA in Church Leadership or to Graduate School and earn a MA in School Administration. I prayed hours askimg for His guidance but NO ANSWER! Then I asked Him to bless MY CHOICE, which was an M.A.in School Administration, and He blessed! Sometimes you have to go ahead in faith, letting the Lord do His blessing in silence!

There are times when either choice may be okay, but God knows that one is best for us. Then we can ask Him for further clarification, to open and shut doors. Many really know that God has said no to a request. They want a yes, so they ask Him to change. This is wrong. See 2 Thes 2:7-12, Jeremiah 42 & 43, and 23:16-40. When He has revealed His truth, we are to ask for strength to obey. God may use others to share the truth with us, but it will be what the Word says. We are to share the Word.

You can know for certain by faith. Faith comes from knowing God's word. Knowing the word of man or of Lucifer can never lead to faith. When we have a decision or choice, then we can ask God to reveal His word to us. Then we find what He says about the subject in His word. As Erik said, we totally surrender that we might know and do. We ask for His Spirit to rightly understand what He has revealed--how to rightly apply and act upon His revealed will. Usually by this time we KNOW what is right.

if the change is going to be a blessing to others and if it is going to glorify god then i'm sure you can go ahead and pray for this change and i'm sure the lord will give you this break but if it is going to be for worldly desires and something which will take you away from the lord then i think its best you let it go. in his time the lord will reveal his plan till then keep praising and thanking him for his past blessings on you.

Dearest Anna,
Ask someone alot closer and more involved in your life than total strangers that will have as many different answers as there are people answering. Peace and rest are two different things and you have to be at rest to get peace, Your answer will be in line-with scripture and at least two if not three witnesses, folks intimate with your life and that are more mature in the faith than you will CONFIRM and agree with what you feel God has already said.

Dear Anna,
When I have to decide on anything I always ask God to have his way in the matter simply
put,God if this is your will so be it,if it is wrong for me take it away and give me peace about it.He has NEVER failed me .

Pt 1
The first thing is, God understands the weaknesses of human nature and He doesn't expect perfection. He just wants you to do the best you can do with where you're at.

Next, realize God knows how to direct you. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." (Prov 3:5-6)
---DoryLory on 6/11/05

Pt 2
Third, let peace guide you. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer & petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds ..." (Phil 4:6-7)

If you're feeling anxious, then I suggest taking a step back. I've found that God doesn't have deadlines. Relax while continuing to trust the Lord knowing that He will never leave you or forsake you (Heb 13:5).

Pt 3
Continually thank Him for guidance and you may find that you suddenly know that you know that you know what to do. Or perhaps you may find that everything worked out and you didn't even notice until it was over and done with. You see, you don't have to know how it's all going to come to pass. You just have to trust Him to have control of the situation. That's when He makes your path straight.

Gold words for us:Jam4:6-10 "..God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and Hi will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double-minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up."

We know God was talking to Abraham. Why? Answer in Gen 26:5 "Because that Abraham obeyed My voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statues, and my laws".
What did Moses to get God`s commandments His will for His people? Exod19:20 "and the Lord called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up".
Conclusion. Now we can come in God`s presence & to talk with Him through Jesus Christ.

But we should not forget that our sins destroy our relationship with God.
---Ellen8479 on 6/11/05

3 - The personal relationship with God. The Holy Spirit says us & leads us: Mr 1:12 "And immediately the Spirit driveth Him into the wilderness"; 1 Cor2:10 "But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit"; Acts8:29 "Then the Spirit said unto Philip"; Acts"16:7 :but the Spirit suffered them not"

There are different ways to know God`s will. It depends how much you trust God & want to be closer to God.
1 - The peace in the heart about something. Sometimes that doesn`t mean "yes", but God does the best for us.
2 - The lot with our prayer. Acts1:23-26 "and the lot fell upon Matthias"

cc: Let me ask you this. I have felt peace about my decision -- but just when I was feeling optimistic about my decision, a huge door was slammed in my face. I could get around the door, but it will be difficult. Your thoughts?

I recently made the most important move of my lifetime and constantly asked God's direction. I saw signs of His answer by the way He opened all the right doors for me, ie. He put people in my path, one had access to boxes, another that just lost a job and had the time to do the hauling & help with cleaning. God's timing is so perfect, I find its looking for His signs and always thanking Him for guiding our lives.

first of all look for peace in the situation
secondly you choose the way god will direct your steps

There are some signs in discerning God's will. First we need to be totally surrendered to His word. If what we seek isn't contrary to His word then keep asking and seeking it. Pray about it with persistence till peace comes. Let the Holy Spirit speak to your conscience. Pay attention to your circumstances. See if any doors open. God always gives His best when we leave the choice to Him. Seek advice from older Christians. Sometimes a desire is placed in our hearts because it is what God wants for us.

Sometimes I have a peace about my situation and the change I am contemplating. Then something happens and I wonder if it is God throwing up a few roadblocks to guide me towards His actual will for me life. Or could it be satan trying to confuse me? This decision is a VERY scary one. It is so hard to listen to the Lord on this because of my own desires. Perhaps putting my decision off for a while would be the answer?

I pray that if God wants me to take the opportunity, He opens the door wide, and if not, He hammers it shut tight. There are some times I have felt it's still been up to me to choose...neither path is right or wrong. But there have been some times when either things went so well I felt peace about the decision, OR when things have gone so badly I knew it was time to turn another direction.
