Shame For Long Hair Men

You stated that the Bible does not specifically express any pros or con about men having long hair. What about I Cor. 11:14 which says that it is a shame for a man to have long hair? KJV

Hello All, i am a 29 young blk male. I have had long hair since I was 13. becasue of the love of God in me and my hair kids open up to me and i able to minister to them more effectivly. They see someone who may understand.I love to meet people who have a bad stereotype of AA men with braids once we speak it opens their minds and hearts to see what God can do. >A lot of people have given good argument on both sides. I could get all deep and quote scripture and argue but honestly ask yourself. Will long hair separate me from the love of God,will it condemn me to hell, does it hinder my salvation and the salvation of others? NO.

it says it is a shame, not a sin---just like" it is a shame it is so hot in this building"

There are no laws concerning dress or hair to the Church, have you not read where Paul argued with the Apostles for trying to impose
Jewish Laws on the gentiles. These scriptures were dealing with problems that came up in the church where pagan Ideas were being brought into the Church. Women shaving their heads
Men dressing like women and braiding their hair with beads and Gold. Women gossiping in the church and causing trouble. Paul was dealing with paganism and perversion not imposing the Law. We are the temple of God and should keep ourselves Holy for the sake of the Spirit God Gave us for he will leave if we don't. But legalism is not a requirement a pure heart is.

lit.Greek: "either nor yet this nature teach us that a man indeed if wavy, dishonor he stands, but a woman if wavy, this stands honor, that set wave for veiling about is given thereupon. But if somebody attempt to be contentious, we indeed this custom not have rather, not if the church of God." I Corinthians 11:14-16.
---Eloy on 9/15/08

--To whom it may concern:

Keeping that verse in the proper context we can see that Paul is speaking of the strength of God that we all (Christ, man & woman) are under.

Paul only used the "Hair" as the metaphor in this passage because hair covers the head & at one time, for the men of Israel, hair was a sign of the virility/potency of a man.

The statement is being made so that we will realize that the strength within us is of God. So we do not shame/dishonor ourselves thinking that we're praying or prophesying under your own strength.

It has nothing to do with physically having long hair!!!!
---Shawn.M.T on 9/13/08

Personally...I love long hair on a man...I'm not talking about down to the waist...but around shoulder length or so and kept clean and neat, of course. :-)
---Holly4jc on 9/5/08

Has anyone ever checked the original Greek wording of this? The word "long" isn't even in the Greek. It's a word that was added by the translators of the KJV. It is actually saying "does not even nature tell you that is is a shame for a man to have hair?"
Referring to the embroidered hair of glory that a woman has. Thus it is teaching us men not to be effeminate. It has nothing to do with length.
---john on 9/3/08

LOL! Love your response there Eloy, practical and funny :D

Short hair for men is better. My reasons are different - even opposite in Alan's case. Look at it from the point of view of women. They do their best to look feminine all their lives, even those who are not blessed with pretty faces. It is to show that they are women not men. Then men come along and pretty themselves up even boys. Even mothers of baby boys and young kids. The male hair is kept in ringlets or died blond or copper etc and grown long (I saw a boy in Japan coming out of primary school like this). What message is this giving society. Poor females have a heck of a time trying to look more and more feminine, when they get older and older and it gets harder and harder. Men should be men and let women be the pretty ones.
---frances008 on 9/2/08

How does having long hair dismiss a man from the "neat and tidy" category?!? This is ridiculous! 1 Samuel 16:7 is very clear about the subject of outward appearances. I realize we don't all agree that long hair is becoming on a man, but please don't use 1 Cor. 11:14 to support what you deem socially acceptable. It might be helpful to understand the translation of the word hair in this verse which is easily accessible by Google search or Logos software.I find this dangerously similar to the "biblical" stance that God does not support mixed marriages. It saddens me that we would dare portray God with the small minded sensibilities of a human being.
---Phil on 9/2/08

Save money, long hair requires more shampoo.

If we are christians, true born again christians our hearts will be motivated by love towards our Maker to do what is decent, upright, honest, true, kind, etc. all the good things that the world is not born with, but might have shades of.Those who do love God will not want to show Him up, so to speak. Would your mother send you out of the house with a dirty face? She inwardly would feel shame and is it not the same for a Christian that he does not wish to offend the Lord by following the world. To be neat and tidy is honouring the very Person that has loved us and continues to do so. Samson was only a figure of something more spiritual. He does not apply nor do the sacrifices of the temples apply any more
---Alan on 8/5/08

What about Samson? He was a Nazarite, which signified a lifestyle that was concecrated to God. Judges 13:5
---Sheeba on 8/3/08

Seems everyone is missing the whole point and context! It is talking about the chain of command and Gods order for living in Christ. A man should be under spiritual subjection to Jesus, his only head, and a woman under subjection to her husband, her only head. If a man is "covered" or under spiritual subjection to another man (or a woman), it is shameful and out of order- as though he were in the position of a woman- or looking like like a woman (long hair=feminine). The opposite is true for a woman- role reversal= might as well chop her hair off and look like a man because spiritually- she is living like one.
---Mike on 7/23/08

Long hair in that time means something completely different than it means today. Leviticus 19:27 says, "do not cut the hair at the sides of your head..." It is clearly a sin to cut your hair. What the bible is saying is that a man should not have his hair styled like a womens, he should let it grow naturally and maybe cut it in the back if it grows too long.

Chapter 11 is about women having their head covered when praying.
Keep Reading and you will see 1cor.11:16
If a man seems "contentious"(Meaning he want's long hair)WE have NO such custom, NEITHER the CHURCH of GOD.
This happens because people insist on USING A Verse to Build their Lives Around, And you build it upon Faslehood.
Was it a Shame for Samson, Jesus and MANY others to have long hair or a Beard?

The Vow of the Nazerene was to HAVE LONG HAIR!

Does Scripture specify what constitutes 'long hair' for a man?

If not then how can we say (for example)shoulder length hair is not proper for a man?
---Warwick on 3/3/08

It is true that the Bible does say "Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him." But further up, in my Bible, in 1 Corinthians 11:13, it says "Judge for yourself. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?" So, it is up to you. Do you think if men have long hair is shameful?
---Colin on 2/29/08

In Jesus's time they did not have barbers with shavers etc. Jesus and his disciples did not have money to spend on their hair. Where I live it is increasingly difficult to look feminine in comparison to the young men who dye and perm and blow dry and grow long hair, just like women, even jewellery and makeup, and no facial hair. Metro men. They are just like women. That is a shame. They should not copy women.

Paul wrote 1stCor. 11:14 and many other things that have caused considerable confusion. You need to test everthing anyone says or writes, who is dead or alive, with the straight testimony of Jesus given to us by His eyewitnesses! See John 14:26 to know why. (Paul, Luke and the UNK writer of Hebrews was not there when Jesus said this)
---Dr._Rich on 2/19/08

Wow! The lengths people go on some of these things. Read the whole section thru the end of the chapter. It does not say that men are to be ashamed of long hair, it says that they are because of the culture, and the church holds no such teachings, that these types of things are used to divide the church. Well done guys, you are doing exactly what Paul says it will.

Eloy: Jesus is white? What cult do you belong to? What do you say to people who have seen him in visions as black, or tan? Explain how having skin as the appearance of copper matches with your white Jesus.

Barbers and the cutting of hair were mentioned in the OT. Samson had long hair sure, but it doesn't mean it's right. Many Godly people also sinned in the Bible, but that doesn't mean it's right. I once saw a Jesus movie where all the men had short hair, but Jesus had long hair. Why, in your heart, do you grow your hair long? To prove that the Bible is wrong and that God only looks at the heart? What's wrong with having your hair short just in case you are wrong in believing long hair is alright?
---Steveng on 2/17/08

At what length does it become "long hair" according to GOD? Why did the same God, Who "forbids" long hair on a man, command that Samson WEAR LONG UNCUT HAIR as a Vow? I Corinthians 11:16 says that "...if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the Churches of GOD." Man judges the outside appearance, GOD looks at the HEART MOTIVE. If long hair is worn to be EFFEMINATE than it's wrong. If it's just culture, as in the 1400's, than it's OKAY. Perhaps?

The only way that a man does not follow the Antichrist is to have the mind of Christ and the witness of the Holy Spirit. That witness is a Christ like life. And a personal relationship with the Father though his Son.
1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
You may be following the Antichrist he is a spirit, Paul called the spirit of the world.

First, eloy, if I am not mistaken the Bible refers to Jesus and having skin as the appearance of copper. Jerry, how did Jesus grow a beard long enough to be plucked out in less than a week. try reading all of Mat. 26. verse 17, Now the FIRST day of the feast of unleavened bread, they ate on the first day and then if you read correctly Jesus was crucified and taken down from the cross before the passover. Now how is Jesus going to grow a beard long enough to be plucked out in a few days.

---Eloy on 2/17/08

Jesus did not have long hair.Jesus is the Word. Jesus was true to the Word. Jesus being the Word knows exactly what it means and what is said in the Word of God. Jesus was a Nazarene. The Nazarene people were a clean cut clean shaven people. The reason Jesus had a beard was because of being locked up before his crucifixion. This allowed time for him to grow a beard long enough to be plucked. The word of God is the same today yesterday and forever.

First of all, it does not just say that it is a shame for men to have long hair. It says "Does not nature itself teach us that it is a shame for men to have long hair?"
In essence, this is saying doesn't society look down on men having long hair?
The ultimate point was that Paul was telling the Corinthians that their men should keep their hair cut in order to not cause the unbelievers (and I'm sure some believers) to stumble.
---Jeremy on 1/29/08

I have a question. Do we change the wording of the Bible in order to justify what we want to do? The Bible is still the same today as it was when it was written.
God's Word does not change today. The Bible says that it is a shame for a man to have long hair. No where in the Bible do you read of Jesus having long hair. Even kids know that a man should have short hair.

According to paintings and art works, Jesus himself had long hair. It looks like those days most men had long hair.

---Albert on 7/24/07

having long hair is not seen as good or evil. Samson Judges 16:17-30 is a good example. he only regained his strength when his hair again grew long. many of the prophets of God had long hair, Moses, Abraham, Isaiah, etc. for men to have short hair is a tradition formed by men to show vanity and power. if you read about sodom and gomorah, you will see that men and women had shaved their heads in defiance of God.
---Dave on 2/11/07

More mind control. I guess they mean obessing over hair like a girl is a waste of time. Then again, boys obssess over their short spiky hair and Jesus had long hair, way past shoulder length. At least that's the common artistic (mis?)interpretation. Besides, isn't Corinthia where Chrysler gets its seat leather?
---Michal_Augustyniak on 2/11/07

As far as the situation with it being a shame for men to have long hair, Paul spoke on the basis of scripture where it says that we are not to have the appearance of evil. At the time, if you do research, the male prostitutes of the time had long hair and the women had short hair or shaven hair, that's why paul said that for that paticular time. However, the length of hair is not going to get you closer into Heaven, people should have more discussion on their relationship with God the father!
