Explain Noah's Ark To Me

I would like to know about Noah and his family and his ark that he built. How many animals were in the ark? How did they fit all those animals in it and how did they take care of them? How big was the ark (i dont understand the demensions in my bible). Did the whole world drown?

A scientist-John Woodmorappe-wrote a book 'Noah's Ark: A Feasibility Study' which covers all the practical details of the ark and its cargo. A good and informative read.

For those less into reading the site creationontheweb dot com has lots of well written and researched articles on the flood, the ark and many other issues covered in these blogs.

Those who ridicule the flood and the ark do so from ignorance.

Presumably the lichen and bacteria could survive submersion in the water.
But still the area of the decks seem too small for all the animals. There were three decks, so unless the animals were caged and stacked, the full height of the decks would not be used. Presumably the height was used to allow the birds to perch ... they were there as the flood story includes the raven and the dove

The person who thought it would have to be a very very large ark containing every single species. Do you know there are different meanings to the word 'evolution'. There is a kind of evolution that I believe in, which is to do with variations within species becoming visible to the eye. I am not a scientist, so please, if you want to know more go to science books. This would be possible over thousands of years, done deliberately by farmers, or by accident in nature.

I don't think any Christian is denying all types of evolution. What I don't believe in is the Darwin and dinosaur (mutually exclusive and rivalling) accounts of the evolution of man and mammals. I think it is a big con job, and I am more convinced than ever after looking in a book on Evolution in a Japanese bookshop. Huge book full of skeleton photos. They looked like patched up things. And...
---frances008 on 5/27/08

I have a children's encyclopedia that says that putting together dinosaurs (??) is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together without the picture to look at, and so scientists make mistakes. Yeah, I bet they make 'mistakes'. The whole idea is a big Mistake of theirs which is making millions for television and Hollywood.

This book I was looking at, with photos of 'dinosaur skeletons' it looked exactly like they had just got bones from hundreds of different animals and fish, and whales and tried to fit them together in some vague way, but the parts did not fit at all. Anyway how come they survived after '40 million' (I use one of their random numbers) years under the ground, or even worse, exposed and in some caves.

Some have already listed the dimensions, so I won't, but a cubit is roughly 1.5 feet.

It had about 95,700 square feet on three decks, 1,400,000 cubic feet, and a gross tonnage of 13,960. It's carrying capacity equaled 522 standard railroad stockcars. It would hold approximately 125,000 sheep. It would have easily carried all the animals needed to repopulate the earth, and the food required to feed them.

Only the land-animals died...those that lived in the seas...well...they just had more room to swim.
Also, dont forget that the clean animals went by sevens, and the unclean by twos.

Gen: 7:2 "You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female, two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female."

The skeptics are so predictable. They don't read what the Bible says, then construct a 'straw-man' argument i.e having fungi etc upon the ark, then show that what the Bible HAS NOT said is impossible! Man, they are so scientific, and rational, not!

Skeptic where does Scripture say fungi, lichen, etc had to go on the ark?
---Warwick on 5/27/08

Yes the whole world drown except for Noah his wife and their three sons and their three wives. The took supplies with them to care for themselves and animals. also at this time men and animals were all still vegetarian. Two of each kind of everything was how many were there.

For the sake of the debate, lets say that they found a REALLY, REALLY big boat. It is imbossible to take all species two by two. Lets look at some numbers of KNOWN species.
287,655 plants
1.5 million fungi
10,000 lichens
1,190,200 invertebrates
58,808 vertebrates
5-10 million bacteria
1.5 million

Grand total = 8,046,663 (low estimate)
Two by two = 16,093,326

Must have been a really huge boat equipped with a modern lab to house the bacteria and fungi....

"450 feet long, seventy-five feet wide, and forty-five feet high.Build a roof for it and put in a window eighteen inches from the top; put in a door on the side of the ship; and make three decks, lower, middle, and upper." ( this is quoted from the message bible)

Clean and unclean is also a 'ananalogy' of future Jews and Gentiles. Gentiles [non Jews] upon conversion to Judaism were submerged/baptized into Judaism becoming Proselytes/converts. Jew and Gentile are under God's Grace Covering/undeserved favor now, no one has/can keep God's laws without blame [except Yeshua Hommacchia, The Lord Jesus Christ, The Sinless Lamb Of God]. Acts 10:1-48 [Gal.2:1-21], Rom.2:1-29, 3:1-35, 7:(1-14)15-25, 8:1-17. Maranatha!

The O.T. lists are found in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14. Remember though, this is the O.T. Levitical Law which has been superceded by the N.T. Judaic Law. So we are not bound by the O.T. Laws anymore, but instead we are under the Judaic Laws. Please read Romans 14:1-4,14-23.

I know this is going to seem like a dumb question but what was the difference between 'clean' and 'unclean' animals?
thank you,

23 were male and 23 were female, so the animals we see in the world today are a result of breeding, including all the people too. Side joke: Was there something in the water to make everybody breed?
---Eloy on 7/10/05

to see some facts on Noah and the ark go to the christian answers website or go to google and put in

how many animals noah's ark

you'll find what you're looking for.

Gen 6: 19 And you will take with you into the
ark two of every sort of living thing, and keep them safe with you; they will be male and female. 20 Two of every sort of bird and cattle and of every
sort of living thing which goes on the earth will you take with you to keep them from destruction.
---rex5764 on 7/10/05

Eloy I'd be glad to see your list of birds, beasts and crawls. Which did he take and which did he leave behind? Why did he leave some behind when God said take 2 or 7 pairs of the various types.
---Paul_James on 7/10/05

It resembled barges of today, as rectangles have larger capacities than anything man designed to this day, only designed to float, not sail! The last eye witness was a young boy, who as an old man, drew the ark on paper, and gave it to ark researcher before dying in 1972. His life and his uncle's life was threatened by atheist's after they led them there. 10-4, over and out!

Those animal counts are inaccurate, first time I heard it explained how they were loaded. If they were loaded that way, the Ark would have been top heavy causing problems floating. Every species on earth at the time were represented in the Ark, the #'s [not that it matters] depended on them being clean or unclean. Read the book, or view the film, as it put's things in proper perspective! I Cor.14:38.

So, there were only 46 animals all together saved on Noahs ark? Seems like there should be a lot more animals than that!
thank you all for the info,
luv,
sue
---sue on 7/10/05

The waters were 22 and 1/2 feet over top of the high hills.
---Eloy on 7/10/05

It was 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high, with three lofts each 15 foot high to separate the animals. There were 46 animals: 14 birds on the top level, 18 beasts on the 2nd level, and 14 crawls on the first level. And it was Noah his wife, and his 3 sons and their 3 wives. They fed them what each kind of animal ate. And yes the whole world drowned.

Sue: You'll find all you want and more in "The Ark On Ararat" [Tim Lahaye/John Morris], including eyewitness accounts, sightings, exact dimentions, location, animals, etc. All Noah and family basically did was enjoy the ride, as most animals hibernate/or be still in adverse weather, feeding was easy. Gen.6:21, 9:3-4. Meat eating was allowed 'after' the flood! The Ark contained all of God's promises to man and the creatures with Noah [Gen.9:1-17]. That world perished, II Pet.3:1-14. Maranatha.
---bob6749_[Elishama] on 7/9/05

Jerry is the closest to being correct about the # of animals. 2 of each unclean, a male and his female. 7 of clean animals, a male and his female-that would be 14 of each clean animal.
---NVBarbara on 7/1/05

After seeing all the hundreds (thousands/millions?) of animals that God sent to Noah, you'd think the people would have believed him and listened to him. right? but they didn't?
---sue on 7/1/05

We are not told how many animals in total but they would only have needed a pair of each type of animal e.g. 2 elephants, not 2 African and 2 Indian etc. Different breeds came about later. Noah would NOT have had to go and find all the creatures. The bible says that God sent them TO HIM. The ark was huge on 3 floors, plenty big enough for what God had commanded. Why wouldn't it be, He knew what He was doing? This was God's plan to SAVE those who would listen just like now He SAVES those who accept Jesus.

Well, Gen.5:32 says that after Noah was 500 years old, he had his 3 sons, and the flood came when Noah was 600 (Gen.7:6), so it was under 100 years. Exact times, I don't think it's specified in scripture.
---Ann5758 on 7/1/05

It took 120 years to build. There were 2 of each of the unclean animals, and 7 of each of the clean animals. Noah and family began to eat meat for the first time after the flood. The lifespan went from 900+ years to 200 years in just a few generations. (Diet related?)
---Jerry6593 on 7/1/05

One might safely assume it took several years, if the history of architecture is anything to go by.
Looking at Gen. 5:32 - 7:6 I don't think it took any more than 100 years. If (and that's a big IF) his sons helped out from day one of the building, then you could shave off 10 - 20 years off that.

It was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide (broad), and 30 cubits high. Gen 6:16. It took him 100 years to finish it. Gen 5:32 then read 7:6.
