According to 1 corinthians chapter 14 Tongues is used to edify an individual, and prophecy is used to edify the church. Tongues cannot be understood by the person praying or by anyone else except God unless the Lord gives someone the interpretation.
---Andrew on 9/18/07

Herb - when did you make that one up. Are you sure your baptist, they're not supposed to drink!
That is just plain bad thinking, bad theology, bad attitude toward the Holy Ghost.
There are many Baptists that speak in tongues and not even the Baptist teach that rot!
---Andrea on 8/11/07

The purpose of tongues today is to bring all religions together. Catholics do it, some baptist do it, satanist do it, and the list goes on. what better way to bring all religions together into a one world religion for the end time.

Speaking in tounges is not what you think. The charismatic movement started the the whole thought that someone can speak in a language that even themselves cant understand. The charasmatic movement started in the 50's and 60's around the same year as the koran. God is unchanging. Why did he change in the 50's and 60's?

Part II
Therefore, Satan can not know the converstation between the spirit of God and God himself because he has nothing of God in him. We can pray for that interpretation because we have the Holy Spirit in us!
---sam on 10/4/06

bobbi- First tongues can be a known earthly language (used to witness to unbeliever), or a heavenly language (used in personal prayer time).Paul says he spoke in both.
In 1 Cor 14, it talks about when the spirit prays, our understanding is unfruitful, but God knows and we speak spiritual mysteries(Paul does say pray for an interpretation).Corinthians 2:9-11 says
"Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God."
---sam on 10/4/06

Does anyone know the biblical references to the idea that satan cannot understand our "tongues" when we pray in the spirit?
---bobbi on 10/4/06

when i started going to church i quit talking bad and people this is not what the bible is talking about cleaning up your cussing it means you will talk with new tongue As god gives you . the holy ghost

Talking in tongues is a gift from God. It is your prayer language to God that only God can understand, no demon, not the devil or anyone else.
---Kenneth_S._Courter on 9/5/06

All spiritual gifts are supposed to build up the Body of Christ. I do not see how tongues, as they are used today, builds up the Body. At Pentecost, the tongues were other languages that were discernable by the different people that were gathered. Now it is a language that nobody understands. How is that edifying me?
---Madison1101 on 9/4/06

jana, "For the speaking in a tongue, not the man speaks, but of God: for no one follows, but the Spirit speaks mysteries. For if I pray in a tongue, the Spirit in me prays, but the knowledge in me is unfruitful. What then to be? I will pray in the Spirit, and I will pray also in the knowledge. Else if you bless in the Spirit, how will he which occupying the place of the uninitiate say the Amen at your giving thanks, since what you say he knows not?" I Corinthians 14:2,14-16.

The same as when it was instituted 1,978 years ago, in 28 A.D., glossalalia was given to edify the body.

"speaking in tongues" in the Bible refers to speaking in foreign languages through the Spirit. when the disciples spoke at pentecost, they all spoke in hebrew, yet people from all around the world understood. THAT is speaking in tongues.
---gabriel on 8/3/05

There are two types of tongues. One with interpretation that has the same effect as a prophecy. The other is a prayer language. And yes, many times you do know what you're praying about because it's what you are thinking about while you are praying in God's perfect will. The prayer language is also a weapon. See "The Perfect Weapon", you can pull it up on the web.

English is a tongue.

Carol, a tongue mentioned in the Bible is a language; it may be English, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, or any other language. We are taught to speak in a language we know; if one does not understand it, we are to have someone to interpret it for us, so others can understand what we are saying.
---Arnold on 7/4/05

I was exposed to speaking in tongues at a conference by Andew Wormack. The first time I really spoke in tongue was through a song i was listening to my christian radio
---jane on 7/4/05

Hi! When I pray, the Holy Spirit grants this special language to glorify Himself. God uses it anyway He wishes. However, I wouldn't pray this way in a congregation (to be followed by interpretation) unless I was certain God wanted this. It's confusing for the unbeliever who may be there. I do use it quietly when praying for healing for someone; God knows their heart better than I do and there is usually a spiritual battle going on at the same time. Blessings on your journey with Jesus!

I haven't spoken in tongues, but I have asked people that I knew that did, and they said they don't know what is being said for the spirit in them is speaking to God. A while back a woman spoke in tongues at church and the preacher interturped it and he said it in the same tone as the woman did. The word tells us that if one speaks in tongues that it doesn't do anyone any good unless it was interturped. It depends on what God wants people to hear. I have heard singing in tongues.

Rebecca_D: When you're speaking in tongues (your private prayer language) do you understand what you're saying to God & more importantly what God is saying to you, & does what He say square with what He has already said in scripture? If not how then are you being edified (built up in the Lord)? This question is for anyone else who claim to speak in tongues.
---Leon on 7/3/05

Tongues were given as a sign to the unbeliving Jew. To speak with a new to tongue is: Before I was saved, I spoke bad words and cursed, now I am saved, I don't use fowl language. I have a new tongue. I don't babble, but speak with a new tongue.
---Rev_Herb on 7/3/05

It seems fitting that the daughters of Babylon should speak her language.

The purpose of praying in tongues (in the Holy Ghost) is not so satan can't hear you. It is for the purpose of bypassing your natural understanding so that the revelation of the mind of God is given to your spiritman. It also builds you up in your most holy faith.

Speaking in Tongues is a special language. It is not something to be afraid of. It is something that the Lord will give you if you ask for it. It is a way that your spirit speaks to the Holy Spirit. I liken it to a hot line that is direct from you to HIM. Anyone who does not understand what it is and it's purpose usually feels intimated by it and generally puts it down. Go ahead, and ask the Lord and HE will give you that special connection. Amen.

Are you referring to some sort of secret prayer language? If so, can you give scripture reference(s) for, "your spirit talks...is being said."? Thanks. :-)
---Leon on 7/1/05

Who cares if Satan understands what you say? That is silly to me. No offense though. Just my humble opinion.

What difference does it make that Satan hears my prayers? I like the fact that he can't do anything to stop them.
We don't need to hide anything from the World Satan or Demons when we are in tune with the Lord.
Satan is fighting a losing battle and has already lost. Should that statement be written as khb hjblkjhb jhh klhb so Satan doesn't hear it? Nah, I think we need to let him know that we know that we are MORE than Conquers though Him that loved us and gave Himself for us.

Same as what it was back in Paul's time. It is still an laugange that your spirit talks directly to God, and satan can't understand what is being said.
