I don't believe that the numbers were intended to be added together.
---Gary_L._Rodgers on 5/9/13

it just happens that the numbers added together are the number of the fruits of the spirit.

In John 21:11 I believe that the numbers that are given are of significant meaning. In The way that it is written in the King James and in the Websters bible it says an hundred, and fifty, and three. I dont believe that God puts anything into scripture by accident. I believe that the Holy Spirit purposely gives every word for good reason.
100 = Gods election of grace / Children of promise
50 = Holy Spirit
3 = Resurrection, Divine Completeness and Perfection, Spiritual Authority
I don't believe that the numbers were intended to be added together.

I believe the number of fish was given to show that the catch was well beyond the tensile strength of the net.
Thereby making it a miracle.

Similar to 4 days given before reviving Lazarus.
---John on 12/9/10

I'm sure there was significance to the number 153. But did they actually count each one?

John 21:1-14. Try to expound a verse in a clear, simple, and usually a literal way, before trying to find an esoteric or parabolic meaning *1. Many interpretations are (at best) made up, and they usually come from mystic and gnostic sources. It was a miracle to catch 153 fish after having caught nothing that night. 230 kilos of Tilapia would normally damage a linen net. Some people use this story, along with the parable of the sower *2, in order to say that Christians should preach the gospel to all men as a fisherman casts a net, God then providing the catch.
*1 Psalm 19:7-14, John 17:17, 2Peter 1:20-21.
*2 Matthew 13:3-23, Mark 4:3-20, 23-29, Luke 8:5-15, Acts 1:8, 5:42, 2Timothy 4:2.

John 21:11 The number of fish, 153, is significant. There were 153 known types of fish at that time. The power of the passage is in what was said next, "the net was not torn". That means God is able to bring all people to Himself. He is able!

John 21, This is 3rd time Jesus appeared after resurrection. 17 is the 7th prime number. St. Augustine added 1 thru 17 together, 1+2=3, 2+3=5, etc the sum is 153. Gregory took trinity twice 3X3X17=153. Jerome said there's 153 kinds of fish, the Gospel is for all kinds of men.
SEE E.W.Bullinger's "Numbers in Scripture",
1 is number of God, 2 is witness, 3 is Trinity, 6 is man, etc.
9 is "complete and final end of all judgements" - 17 is "complete and perfect spiritual order". 153 then is about Jesus, He fulfilled "the perfect complete and orderly final end of all spiritual judgements". Rev19:10 "the spirit of prophecy is testimony of Jesus".

Vesica Piscis, made from two circles of the same radius means 'the bladder of the fish'. The ratio of its w to h is believed to be 265:153. This ratio 1.73, is a 'holy number' - the measure of the fish. The geom. ratio of these dimensions is the square root of 3, or 1.73... The ratio 265:153 is an approximation to the square root of 3. 153 in the Gospel of John (21:11) is the number of fish Jesus caused to be caught in a miraculous catch of fish - thought to be a coded reference to Pythagorean beliefs.

The number 153 is significant in meaning---It is an encouragement to Christ's Ministers to continue their work. One happy draught, at length, may be sufficient to repay many years of toil at the gospel net.---Those that would have supplies from Christ must own themselves empty and needy.---1. As a miracle in itself. 2. As a mercy to them. 3. As the memorial of a former mercy, with which Christ had formerly recompensed Peter for the loan of His boat.

There were about 150 fish caught, Jesus was cooking some fish on the fire (actually 3 fish, a reminder to Peter of his denial), the 150 plus the 3 comes to 153!

It is the number between 152 and 154. :)

But seriously, that is all there is to it. That is just how many that were caught.

This may be a prophetic response of the number of nations which will make up the end time world at the time of Christ Return. Nations come and go, but there will be 153 at His Return representing all peoples. To which the followers of Christ are sent to evangelize.
---J_D on 10/2/06

I have heard that "153" is also the same number of people "specified" as being ministered to by Jesus in the NT. Example - 10 lepers, woman at the well but not 5000 people fed by 2 fishes and 5 loaves of bread. I haven't verified but others said they have; it does mesh well with making us fishers of men though.

In v.3 Simon Peter told the disciples he was going fishing, they replied they were going with him, after fishing *"in season" all *night, not catching a single fish, The Lord appeared and told them to cast their nets on the 'right' side and they would find [it is now daylight or out of season]. Empty nets ='s zip without The Lord, with The Lord ='s a multitude! "without me, ye can do nothing", Jn.15:1-'5'; *Lke.5:1-11. Maranatha!

153, That's the amount of whole numbers that are in 153.
---Pete on 7/6/05

Why doe sit have to be the number of varieties? Seems much more likely that it is exactly what the words say, ... the number of fish caught.

It means that when Simon Peter drew the net, there were 153 fish in it and the net didn't break. It shows how strong the net is for carrying so much fish.
---Rebecca_D on 7/6/05

That's how many fish were counted that they caught.
---Eloy on 7/6/05

it means 153 large fish..nothing cryptic about it..blessings
---Ann5758 on 7/6/05

Loren I am sure that it is simply telling us how many fish they caught, not the variety or anything else, just how many in total.
