I need some advice. I am studying 2B-Social Worker. I've been battling w/in myself 4 a long time over this. I don't want 2 take away GOD's sovreignty & providence by giving advice & helping people when that's His job. I'm not GOD & I feel uncomfortable playing that role. Any advice?

1)you feel you need advise? listen to that little voice, pray & test it. 2) in battle with yourself? that is not possible but you may be battling against what is God's will. Proverbs 3:5,6 "Trust in the Lord with ALL your heart & lean NOT to YOUR own understanding. Acknowledge Him and HE will direct your life". 3) you feel guilty about giving advise & helping others? that isn't possible. This comes compelling for me to say to you: GOD sends only good news while satan only wants to control you.

I hope that Luke Chapter 10 verses 25-37
will help with your conflict, Remember that we are the body of Christ, and that his good work is done through us.

Chante,
we as christians are vessels in the hands of God and if he decides to speak thro u to others then u are vey blessed. If u dont give people godly advice as a social worker then the ungodly will advice the public and u sure know what that means.God speaks to us thro his word and thro people(pastors, elders, christians and even thro good people)and when there is no one, animals like in balam s case

No Ray that's not what I said. A talent is juggling balls on your head.Helping people solve their problems through the bible is not a talent, its ministry just as a good counsellor will resist the urge both from within and from the counsellee to "tell them what they should do". Skilled Counsellors employ good listening and reflecting and help people to help themselves not become dependant on help....no, your 40 years aren't wasted.

Ray and Lisa: I have just about completed an MSW in clinical social work. In learning my therapeutic skills, I have learned that good listening and asking good questions helps the client learn what is needed to do. I have also been taught to rarely give advice because if the results of the advice turn out negative, then the client will blame therapy for their negative outcome. It is better for the client to learn to make healthy choices for themselves, and benefit from the empowerment that gives.

Hello Lisa! According to what you, that means 40 years of counseling have been wasted. The folks I have counseled wanted concrete directions. In most of the seminars I've given dealt with Relationships. To simply let them talk it out, is not the solution. The Bible, which I always use as my base, has the best psychology. The Personnal Profile I use defines the personality of the person, etc. It a tool, to be sure, but like any tool, it has to used as designed to be effective. This requires talent.

Dear Ray, God bless you brother but giving advice is not a talent, its a learnt skill . In fact a good counsellor or therapist will in fact refrain from giving advice and rather, employ their active listening skills to help the client find their own answers. This empowers them to help themselves and not become dependant on their therapist....The therapist doesn't have the answer, each person has their own answer. You get advice from friends, family, well wishers and know it alls.

Chante, to futher help you on your path. I'm a social science graduate and am enrolled to do my masters. My long term goal is to get a PHD and even have a radio program, look at Dr Laura, so many look to her but she's not christian yet so many christians ring in to her...its all about helping people with their emotional and mental issues. Your leant skills together with your heart of God and Godly insight! See yourself as purpose built for this task. As I said IF NOT YOU THEN WHO?

God didn't make robots. If you have a talent in giving advice, use it. You are not taking anything from God - in fact, He may be using you do assist others in knowing what they should do. You are only giving advice, not dictating what they should do. I have this same problem with giving personality profiles - I have to explain, God gave us the personality - all I'm doing is helping you see what God has given you. By giving advice, and of course seeking God's wisdom, you are helping not hindering.

WOW! Thanks everyone for the advice. I needed to see some other's people's opinions about this as I am coming up on this last year B4 I graduate. I am feeling frustrated that I am having this internal battle. But I know what I need to do. Thanks to everyone who replied.

Chante, You are God's hands and God's mouth on the earth today. If not you, then who?

Chante :Jesus said "I came to serve & not be served" you will not take away you will add to His work. If you still feel that way change your profession. The evil one floods our thoughts with negative ideas.Blessings on your choice.

Dear Chante: What I really hear you saying is that you want to know the will of God and His purpose for your life. I can say, as a professional social worker, that God uses me everyday of my life in and out of social work. Every patient every client I serve is guided by God through me as His vessel by the power of the Holy Spirit. In my view there is no greater calling as His servant in Christ! Pray, seek, find His will for you!!

Here are just a few verses that deal with counsel. It follows that if it is a good thing to recieve counsel, there has to be a counselor.
Proverbs 11:14, "Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety."
Proverbs 12:15, "The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise."
Proverbs 20:5, "Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out."
---Bruce5656 on 7/29/05

Chante, the best counselors,in a clinic setting, don't give advice.Their job is to help the person understand themselves, their motives in life ,how to respond and relate to other people, then the person works out their problems themselves. You teach a person how to be in touch with their own feelings and to "own"(be responsible for) their own behavior. Then it's up to them to work out whatever is bothering them with these new tools for relating to others and life.Advising isn't a counselor's job.

I am finishing an MSW this summer. It is a career change for me. In clinical social work, I am not giving advice, but doing therapy. There is a huge difference.

Social worker don't just give advice. They help people access services that they would otherwise not be able to access. Social workers help people when they are at their lowest.

God expects us to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, and give shelter to the homeless. That is what social workers do.

Who says you can't be a social worker and follow God? We need more Christian people giving help and advice to those who seek it. Maybe you could be a Chrisitan counselor and quote scriptures to back up your advice. God bless you and guide you.

I find your "blog" confusing. You seem to be asking us to do the very thing you don't want to do (give advice and help to people) because you think it is God's job. If you were right we would not be blogging, would we? May it will help you do remember that God wants us very much to help others who are in need. So if I were you, I would first get myself straighened out and if you still feel the same in 1-2 months plan for a different career

Memorize and quote Scripture. It is God's greatest advice book. The Bible contains guidelines for healthy living, warnings about bad living and the knowledge that we choose.

Chante, God expects us to be his feet and hands. I have been in law enforcement for 28 years and like social work a pretty thankless job. But I do feel like I am serving God. Bless you in your journey. iki
