Why does the Lord command you to be perfect? If it is impossible to be perfect, as many wrongly say. (ref: Matthew 5:48)

All::The reason why Perfection is demanded of us by Jesus is because we are made to the image and likeness of God same as Adam2. Representative as God Incarnate (God and Man).So this is our goal if we desire salvation.Because nothing defiled enters heaven. We are made to know and serve Him our Creator.

We can only be perfect by living the "PERFECT law" (LOVE)...

Ephesians 2:15
"by abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace"

James 1:25
"But he who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer that forgets but a doer that acts, he shall be blessed in his doing"

James 2:12
"So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty"

We have already been justified IN CHRIST

1 Corinthians 6:11
"And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God"

Galatians 2:16
"yet who know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified".

Yes be ye perfect as he is perfect. Not sure but if so then we should strive always to be better and work at it. Do we some I guess. Many make excuses but it must be achievable or it wouldn't be there.

Yes and unfortunantly MORE than ONCE!

If I might interject, what determines perfection? We know it is not by the external system of the law. Jesus nailed the law to the tree, right? It can only come by the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ. I believe we are perfect in Him; it's the supernatural transformation of the old man at salvation. As we believe in our hearts, we cannot help but be who we are. A doer of the word is still in works unless he first believes in his heart who God says he is. Then "doing" is just the fruit.

Thanks, Eloy! That helped me to see the word in a new light.
---Pierr7958 on 8/22/05

Pierr, it's my pleasure: "My soul will make its boast in YHWH: the humble will hear, and be glad. In God we boast all the day long, and praise your name for ever. Selah. For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord has given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed." Psalm 34:2; 44:8; II Corinthians 10:8.

Whenever God gives us a commandmant he also gives us the power to become. All that we will ever become is found only in him He is our all in all.We are none of these things apart from him.
---Tsuanne on 8/22/05

the word perfect here means mature. God expects us to grow and mature in him.As we learn truth from God's word we are responsible to walk in that truth. put it in to practice. (be a doer of the word) We will be held accountable for that. We are not to stay ignorant but to grow up spiritually.
---Tsuanne on 8/22/05

I guess I prefer "praising" to "boasting"
Can you give me a text where boasting is used in a positve context? That would help me. Thanks.
---Pierr7958 on 8/22/05

Pierr, the 1st group never really knew the Lord, and the 2nd group had a relationship with the Lord, but they did not realize they served Jesus when they served the needy. We are to boast loudly to the people and let our lights shine brightly that the unsaved may see our goods works, and give glory to God in heaven, and also that they too will desire to have the same salvation as we. But if you walk in shame and hide your talent in the earth, then how will anybody get saved? Indeed then, none will.
---Eloy on 8/21/05

Eloy: I say this in love: there is a much to PRAISE the Lord for but BOASTING has a self centered connotation about it.
The Bible says that many will lost, boasting of all they did while on earth >> "Lord, lord...and He will say to them 'Go away! I don't know you!'
Then there is the other group, wondering how they found mercy, surprised they are saved saying> "But Lord, when did we do all these things?" And you know His answer.
Just something to think about.

Pierr, i will always boast of my salvation, for the servant is as his master is. And his praise will continually be upon my lips. i am made the righteousness of Christ. When we are born-again, we are transformed into his likeness. "All who redeemed by YHWH 'WILL SAY', everyone whom he redeemed from the hand of the enemy." Psalm 107:2. We are commanded to proclaim our salvation! not shhhh, be quiet and quench the spirit, somebody might hear you.
---Eloy on 8/21/05

By the grace of God, we may put away every known sin and be perfect in own sphere with
no consciosness of cherished sins in our heart.
Now Eloy, does that mean that we should boast that we live without sinning? NO! On the conrary, the closer we come to Christ, the
more we should sense our unwothiness and when we attain the standard of Christ, we will be the last to reccognize it and much less to boast of it!
---Pierr7958 on 8/20/05

Can we then equal the perfect pattern of Christ'a sinless life? NO, because all of us have sinned and have degraded human nature ,
giving way to the flesh and we have far too often cooperated with Satan. Even so we should seek earnestly to reflect that holy life of Jesus as fully as possible. TBC

Here is what the Bible has to say:
2 Cor 10:3-5 presents us with a promise made comcerning sinners in the flesh who turn to the delivering power of the gospel. Their victory can be ours. TBC

When our heavenly Father tells us to behave and be perfect just like he is, we can, and we should.
---believer on 8/6/05

My goal was achieved, praise God! it has brought some of you closer to the truth. The Greek word used is Teleios which means Perfect. God Commands us to be above this world and it's common standards, by being perfect and manifesting perfect actions which can only come from God, like loving your enemies or loving those who hate you. When we let this light shine, then the world can witness God's goodness in action and they will give glory to God, and some will want to possess this living power too.
---Eloy on 8/5/05

Perfect= spotless, flawless, without sin ,striving to maintain this, his high caliber or life is pleasing to God.One cannot enter heaven with the stain of sin it must first be removed. It is a command
Is it possible?I guess it is; otherwise Jesus would not have asked this of us.
---Emcee on 8/4/05

We are in Christ and Christ is in us, that's why God sees perfection in our spirit. We ARE made perfect in Him! Our EARTH SUITS will never be perfect. That's where religion got it wrong and cannot see through the eyes of the spirit unto spiritual matters. It strives to perfect the outer shell which rots, neglecting the inner self which Christ perfects as we grow from glory to glory IN HIM. Perfection comes from the inside out NOT the outside in and only through time spent in His presence.

Paul spoke of this in Philippians 3:12, "Not as though I... were already perfect... ."
Yet in Philippians 3:15, "Let us therefore, as many as be perfect..."
The first perfection is unatainable.CHRIST is our perfection.
---Bruce5656 on 8/4/05

The second perfection refers to our state of development. The apple blossom is as perfect as is the immature fruit as is the ripe fruit. Perfect in its stage of development.

Heb 6:1 speaks of perfection as a goal to be attained. Not a state into which we are placed.
---Bruce5656 on 8/4/05

EJ, It is possible to be as perfect as Christ our Lord, that is what being a Christian is, it is being Christlike, being like Christ. Please read Matthew 10:24,25.
---Eloy on 8/4/05

This I believe should be our goal. I suggest that is also a process whereby we listen to, learn from and grow with Jesus' help. Col 1:28
perfection will be completed in us when Jesus comes back. See Jude 24-25.

God wants us to continue through out our lives learning to be more like God, which is perfect. We can never be as perfect as God but can always strive to be perfect in God's Eyes. That is perfection to God.
---EJ on 8/4/05

This passage is in reference to loving our enemies. God is perfect. God's desire is for all to be saved. God sent his Son to redeem a potential all of mankind - whosoever. God's love is so great and so perfect.
And we are perfected through the love of Christ. Can we also love and do good to our enemies trusting God to be the judge. And trusting God to vindicate?
---barbara67 on 8/4/05

If you read the passage (Matthew 5:43-48) the context is about loving the unlovely. We are called to be like our heavenly Father who IS love (1 John 4:16). The word perfect here (in the Greek) is not talking about being morally perfect but speaks rather of maturity. The world loves only those who love them. We are to express love by our actions and see to the good of all.
---DoryLory on 8/4/05

Oh man, perfect? If anything God tells us over and over it is impossible for us to be perfect. In this passage it is not refering to perfection like God, it is referring to perfection in our completeness. It is telling us to possess "perfect"(complete) love like Jesus.

Well, I could be wrong, but, I think that he means to be perfect in our faith and love towards Him (God). And live by faith in the Son.

it's biblical, jesus said,be therefore perfect even as your fatherwhici is in heaven is perfect.

because he made us and not we of ourself,he is our "elohim",he knows what we can be before we do and if we follow all his commendments ,we will be like him.
