Is God A Male Or A Female

Is God a male or female- or neither? I know he is the Father. But he is an immortal spirit. My friend and I were talking about this, and I didn't know what to say.

MALE: The Spirit of God is the Spirit of Christ, and he is manifested male: The Lord God Jesus made Adam after his form and shape, which is man.
---Eloy on 10/13/10

NEITHER>>>Jesus taught that God is spirit. God has no body, no physical or measurable form. Thus, God is invisible. He became visible in human form in the Person of Jesus Christ. Scripture identifies God as the one who interacts with other persons as a person.....God's character: is holy love. It is important never to separate the holiness of God from the love of God. God is pure, righteous, and just. God's Holiness and our sins are incompatible. His eyes are too pure to look upon evil and He cannot tolerate wrong. God's wrath, that is His Holy reaction to evil. The price of diluting God's wrath, His anger, is to DIMINISH His HOLINESS and Moral Character. Look up God in your Bible commentates. Plenty of Scriptures for you, my friend.

Mat 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

That means:

1. The Holy Spirit has male attributes.

2. The Holy Spirit is the Holy Surrogate.
---aka on 10/12/10

Gordon, you present falsehood, for there is no "she" nor "her" in the Godhead, none, none found throughout all of Holy Scripture. You will not find the weaker vessel attribute anywhere in God, zero. As a matter of fact, God says, "Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget you. Note, I have graven you upon the palms of the hands, your walls continually in front of me." Is.50:15,16.
---Eloy on 10/12/10

You guys are not at all understanding the things I've mentioned. Fine. Not bothering to pray about them to GOD Himself. Fine. Yet, again, I never, never said that "GOD is a woman", or any such foolishness. I said that the Holy Spirit is Feminine. GOD-Head most certainly consists of Masculine and Feminine Traits. Mankind was patterned after, and was created with, these Attributes of GOD. You don't need a lofty Theologen to understand these basic things of GOD. GOD is multi-faceted and Almighty, but yet, there are some things of GOD so simple that children can understand them, while some adults stumble over them, because they're "too hard to believe".
---Gordon on 10/12/10

in this temporal world, can't we just be still with the Bible as it is presented?

we were made in their image.
---aka on 10/11/10

Christian, A-men. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ, and therefore 100% masculine. Since God is always masculine, as the Father, and the King of kings, and the Lord of lords, and also Jesus has a beard, thus the Holy Spirit or breath of God proceeding from him is masculine. Yes, in the Godhead is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and no mothers exist, for the man was made in God's image, not the woman, and woman was made for man, not God. The Holy Spirit Shiloh is called by the personal pronoun "He"(Isaiah 40:13, John 14:26, 15:26, 16:7,8,13-15). Please read Genesis 1:2, 2:7, Matthew 1:18, John 20:22,23.

Gods Spirit: "Who is this King of glory? Yhwh of hosts, he the King of glory. Exalt. Know you all that Yhwh he God. The voice of Yhwh upon the waters. Who can this be that even the wind and sea obey him? And he comes to them, walking upon the sea, and says to them, Take courage: I am, be not afraid. His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Did we not cast three men bound into the middle of the fire? They answered and said to the king, True, O king. He answered and said, Note, I see four men loose, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God. Ps.24:10+ 100:3+ 29:3+ Mk.4:41+ 6:48,50+ Is.9:6+ Dn.3:24,25.

God is a spirit and with out gender but the attribute list has the best non physical characteristics of both genders.
---Blogger9211 on 10/12/10

God is not a male but a male is in the image of God as progenitor. Its not possible to be female and progenitor thus he is refered to in male terms for us.
temporal life begins with the male - and life begins with God, a spirit. Both are progenitors - its that simple.

Gordon, I too recomend as Harold to read one of those systemetic theology books by those and many other writers who teach how to interpret Scripture correctly, that they give you a better inside on what Scripture is talking about, and with the help of the Spirit you will know to use only what is explained in Scripture and not speculate to the point of introducing a new doctrine. Your reasons as stated are of what you think of a man and a woman, and even go so far as to bring a Triune God to justify what you are saying when in reality, it's a complete different topic. Christian, Harold and others here are correct. This is no condemnation coming from me, just a correction, before you enter more speculations that will confuse you more.
---MarkV. on 10/11/10

There's a reason why God through His Holy Spirit wrote in the Holy Bible describing Himself as a He and Father, calling Jesus as His Son and even coming as a Man.

As Jerry6593 says "Our opinions to the contrary are irrelevant."

So take heed of John's warning in Rev 22:18,19 - "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book."

Case closed!

//You can't have a Son with ONLY a Father...//

You cant limit Gods abilities to the understanding of men. Otherwise He would just be another man himself.
---JackB on 10/11/10

Alan of U.K., There is, now, no doubt in my mind that much of the church has misunderstood and underestimated the Fatherhood of GOD. Do we, or do we not, (those of us in the Church who SAY that we believe that GOD is a Triune GOD), do we really, really BELIEVE that GOD is Triune? DO WE? GOD is either Three Persons or He is only One Person. GOD is ONE. But, that's a ONE of Unification, not, One in solitude. GOD made the human family to consist of husband and wife. Then, when these two copulate and pro-create, they become "father and mother". If that, being GOD's own Design....How is it that there is, in the GOD-Head, a Father, a Son, but, "no Mother"? Or, no Mother-like Being? You can't have a Son with ONLY a Father...
---Gordon on 10/11/10

Gordon .. Are you saying that the holy Spirit had feminine attributes. Maybe, but there wlll also ba male attributes

Same, I suggest, with God the Father ... since "He" is complete and all powerful, "He" must have females attributes
---alan8566_of_uk on 10/11/10

HAROLD, I did not say that God the Holy Spirit was a "Woman". A woman is a HUMAN BEING made of flesh. GOD is Spirit. The Holy Spirit is Spirit. I am saying that the Holy Spirit is FEMININE. That is not the same as saying that She is "Female". "Female" applies to any living, feminine created being. "Feminine" is more of a word referring to Characteristics and Attributes rather than physical make-up. The masculine and feminine traits that men and women have are but a shadow of the Masculine and Feminine Traits of GOD. But, they are patterned after the Traits of GOD. God the Holy Spirit is not a "Woman". God the Holy Spirit is Feminine. And, She is Femininity in it's complete and perfect Form.

\\God instructs us in Timothy to study to show thy self approved.\\

The word most English Bibles translate as 'study' does not mean academic application, but "strive"--which is also an old use of the word "study".
---Cluny on 10/11/10

There is not enough space here to teach all about God. May I suggest you read Lectures In Systematic Theology by Henry Thiessen, Systematic Theology by Hodge, and Systematic Theology by Berkhof, and other. God instructs us in Timothy to study to show thy self approved.
If God has a body like ours then He is restricted in time and space as we are by the limits of that physical body.
Mankind is created in God's image in mental likeness, Moral likeness, and social likeness, not a physical likeness.
You need to get your theology from God and his people, not Archie Bunker.
---Harold on 10/11/10

Gordon, you answered kindly and I will answer the same. First, God is Spirit. He has no body parts. When Scripture mentions body parts of God they are known as "Anthropomorphisms" It simply means that His actions as seen from the human view-point appears to be like that of a man. We could not possibly look like Him. In "His image" defines man's unique relation to God. Man is a living being capable of embodying God's communicable attributes (9:6, Romans 8:29, Col. 3:10, James 3:9). In his rational life he was like God in that he could reason and had intellect, will, and emotion. In a moral sense, he was like God because he was good and sinless.
---MarkV. on 10/11/10

No, MarkV, Both the man AND the woman were created in the Image of GOD. Those Verses that you claim were "two separate events", are speaking of the same event. The second is a BREAKDOWN of the first. It was GOD creating mankind in HIS Image in the process of steps. First HE created the human male (in the Image of the Father, then, the woman was created (in the Image of the Holy Spirit). YAHUSHUA/JESUS, being the only Begotten Son of GOD, was in the Image of the Father (Masculine, Male) with Characteristics of the Father and of the indwelling Holy Spirit (as expressed in LUKE 13:34, as a Female would cry out!). The human family is what was created in the Image of GOD. NOT JUST ADAM.

Eloy, The Whole GOD-Head is not Masculine. That is "male chauvnist" biased. I'm not saying that YOU'RE a male chauvnist, for you're only believing what you've been taught for years, or whatever. Rather, the belief that GOD is ONLY Masculine is sprung from male biased. Women, for CENTURIES, have, in many ways, been looked down on as "less than" men. That's just the truth. So, naturally, the understanding of the Image of the GOD-Head was filtered through this biased by leading religious men, etc. The woman and her feminine traits were not just some sort of "after-thought" from GOD after He created Adam. The Feminine Traits that the woman received were already present within the GOD-Head before Eve was created.
---Gordon on 10/11/10

Gordon, You took two simple passage in Genesis and somehow, turned it to a new doctrine. All in two passages. "Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness:" is one event. For next it speaks plurally, "Let "them" have dominion over the fish of the sea etc," is another event. v. 27, "So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him" is another event. "male and female He created them" Plural, another event. "Then God blessed them" Plural, another event.
What you did was put together "he" and "them" and called it the image of God. Just rediculous. But a good try, but wrong interpretation.
---MarkV. on 10/11/10

Gordon, you blaspheme, for there is no woman in the Godhead. God made woman to be the helpermate for man, and to have families to multiply the earth. Every spirit of man is masculine and every spirit of woman is feminine. The Almighty Spirit of the Lord God Jesus is 100% masculine.
---Eloy on 10/10/10

JackB, The Trinune GOD-Head consists of Two Masculine (Father and Son) and One Feminine (Holy Spirit). The reason why GOD is referred to as HE and HIM is because the Masculine always takes dominance, even with a Feminine Gender present. It's just like what is done in the Spanish language. If you have all males in a group, it's "they/them" in the masculine, "ellos". If you have all females, it's "ellas". But, if you place even one male among that group of women, the "ellas" automatically becomes masculine, "ellos". Masculine takes dominance. That's how it is when referring to GOD. The LORD Himself structured it that way. The Father is the "Head of the Household" within the Holy Trinity.

God said, "neither". I said, "but, what about your voice, it's manly? Jesus was a man.
---catherine on 10/9/10

Sorry, HAROLD, but "GOD being genderless" is not true. If you'll go back to the Book of GENESIS and read Verses 1:26 and 27. It says "And GOD said, Let US make man in OUR Image, after OUR Likeness...So GOD created man in HIS own Image, in the Image of GOD created HE him, 'male' and 'female' created HE them." So, that indicates and means, that GOD's Image consists of Masculine and Feminine Traits and Attributes. GOD created the HUMAN FAMILY in the Image and Pattern of the Triune GOD. Then, GENESIS 2:24 speaks of the man cleaving to his wife and the two becoming one flesh, to beget children and THEREAFTER to be of three or more persons to form ONE FAMILY. Patterned after the Image of GOD Who is Three Persons Who are ONE.

I believe that one of the reasons that male imagery for God was used in the Bible was to show YHVH's total OTHERNESS from the pantheons of the surrounding pagan cultures, most of whom had female deities at the head.
---Cluny on 10/9/10

Cluny -- yes. God is independent of gender. And I think sometimes we make too much of His gender...which is OK for those with healthy family relationships. But I know of some people who have deep and painful issues with their father and/or other men.
I know of one person who, having been physically and sexually abused by his natural father, struggled for years trying to accept Jesus as Savior and especially, God as "father", He was given the novel called The Shack in which God and the Holy Spirit were represented symbolically as warm, loving, motherly persons..
The book probably horrified some tradition- bound Christians, but it provided this man with a break-through that led, at last, to his salvation.

First we have to understand that "GOD" is not "One Person". GOD is the Entity that consists of Three Divine Persons. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Father is Masculine. The Son is Male and Masculine and the Holy Spirit is Feminine. The Holy Spirit is the Comforter. The Holy Spirit is Wisdom. The Holy Spirit is the "Paraclete", the One who comes along-side another one. The Spirit gives birth to spirit: JOHN 3:6. These are mostly Feminine Traits.

Gordon, I'm sure the "Scriptures" didn't mean "image" of God to be male or female. It meant, they "had" the Spirit of God in them. For God is a "Spirit". The "image" was that they were "pure" without sin in the "beginning." God bless.

GOD (YAHUVEH) is a masculine God. JESUS (YAHUSHUA) said that to see Him is to see the Father. We know that JESUS (YAHUSHUA) is Male. I believe that as mankind created in GOD's image, men were given part of GOD's attributes and Women were given other of His attributes. So that as a man and woman come together and "work out" their bonding relationship as "one" they are like God to parent their children and teach them of the One and True GOD (YAHUVEH). But, there's more.

All three manifestations in the Godhead are masculine; that is, the Father is masculine, the Son is masculine, and the Holy Spirit is masculine. Whenever the word "spirit" is used in scripture, the context of the word will define whether it is masculine or feminine. And whenever "Spirit" is used in reference to God, as in the Holy Spirit, it is always masculine, for God is masculine, he is the potentate, and Almighty.

God made man in his image, not woman. God is He, King, Lord; and not the weaker vessel as a she, queen, or lordess. Precisely you could say God created Man from the dust of the earth which looks like himself, and he created Woman from man's rib which does not look like himself (ie: anatomically, nor physically, nor pilously).
---Eloy on 5/14/07

God has both "giving" and "receiving" qualities about His character. Man reflects the "giving" aspect and woman reflects the "receiving" aspect. This helps explain why reproducing is a Godly act, not a sinful one. It is the union of both qualities to produce a single being. As for God being male He apparently prefers to be referred to as "He." That is pretty straight-forward.

I can't say for certain if God is male or female but it really doesn't matter. Although God is usually referred to by the masculine side, God carries both qualities. I would challenge anyone who says that woman is the "weaker vessel" to provide biblical proof of this. No where does the bible call women "weaker." Women have strengths and weaknesses. Men have strengths and weaknesses. They are definitely different, but weakness depends on what exactly you are talking about. In some instances, I think it is entirely fair to call the man the "weaker vessel," but that's just me. The bible doesn't support this opinion either.

Pierr, You probably missed my comments below where God calls angels in heaven "sons of God" (angels = sons of God). It's a huge logical fallacy to suggest that SPIRITUAL beings (angels) could be female just because a woman could be a messenger. Angels only APPEAR as men when taking on human form, but that doesn't make them human males; "sons" is anthropomorphic language (even though used by God). Only the Word(Jesus) actually became a man while still remaining God.

---Eloy on 8/15/05

Blade, Will any say you forgot "or both"?
But it's really a nonsensical question. God has ALWAYS existed as God; totally beyond our comprehension!

Pierr:READ Luke 20:27-38. These verses speak of men in heaven: "neither marry nor are given in marriage;" and "because they are like angels, and are sons of God." Again, angels are always described as 'sons of God'. (Romans 8:16 uses the phrase "children of God" which includes female Believers.)
---Daniel on 8/15/05

Blade: The question can ONLY be asked as: "When one of the persons of God takes on human form, what gender are they?" because God 'Himself' (which I use because Scripture does) is *not* a created, reproducing being! HOWEVER, the Word did become a MAN; Who now has a spiritual body in heaven. 'He' also called God 'Father' when talking to us about 'Him'. So, I'll continue using the prophet's and Jesus' own words to describe God.

Whenever angel's names are mentioned, they are always male. The popular idea in our western society of calling a woman an "angel" is just that... has no basis in Scripture whatsoever.

Ken is right ... God does not have gender. But man was created in His image and He does have both the male attributes given to Adam and the female attributes given to Eve. He has the characteristics of male and female but He does not have gender.

Blade: Cont.
angels are spirits with form Heb 1:14
God is spirit but with form Dan 7:9
Jesus rose with a spiritual body Luk 24:39
and sat down with people to show them that he was real. So what gender?
Angels = M + F
God = Father = M
Jesus = M
in my opinion.
