Does The Body Burn In Hell

Do any Scriptures explicitly describe the state of a lost person's body in hell? Will they continue to have one; or will it burn away? If you're an annihilationist, please don't waste space saying they won't exist.

Mal 3:11+12 tells us that the unjust will be burnt to ashes = completely destroyed. They will not go on burning throughout eternity.
Zeph 1:18 God will make a 'speedy ridance' of the unjust. TBC

Jude 7"Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner..are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of ETERNAL FIRE"
II Peter 2:6"and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ASHES condemed them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly"
Malachi 4:3 "And ye shall tread down the wicked, for they shall be ASHES under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of Hosts"
---Gina7 on 5/12/07

Malachi 4 is talking about the day of judgement upon the wicked: "For behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven, and all the proud, yea,and all that do wickedly, shall be STUBBLE (does this say burn forever, or does the fire go out & they turn to stubble?),and the day that cometh shall burn them UP(or does it say burn them forever?),saith the Lord of Hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch (or does it say leave them intact with eternal life, living and burning forever?)"
---Gina7 on 5/12/07

Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death (ceasing to exist); but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." DOES NOT READ "For the wages of sin is not the second death, and not ceasing to exist, but living forever, and having eternal life in the lake of fire, going mad from the unending torture"
---Gina7 on 5/12/07

Sinners suffering eternally would make them out to be immortal, and only the righteous will be given immortality. (see 1 Corinthians 15:53,54.) "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord". Romans 6:23. The wages of sin is DEATH, not living forever in the lake of fire! Death is being dead, not alive. Only LIFE, eternal LIFE, is given to those who do not sin, do not break the 10 commandments.
---Gina7 on 5/12/07

What does Jude verse 7 say? "Even as Sodom & Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication... suffering the vengeance of eternal fire". Show me the eternal fire, still burning, that was once Sodom & Gomorrha, and I will show you the enternal fire of Hell.
---Gina7 on 5/12/07

God said the consequences of sin would be death, "for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die" Gen 2:17 but the devil told Eve instead "And the serpent said unto the woman "Ye shall not surely die" Gen 3:4. Shall we believe God, who said the 'wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord' Rom 6:23 or do we believe the devil who says the consequences of sin is not death "ye shall not surely die"?
---Gina7 on 5/12/07

The fact that sinners have fire & brimstone rained down on them to destroy them, causing them to suffer, then be destroyed root &branch & be ashes under our feet, IS PUNISHMENT. "Fire came down from heaven and devoured them" Rev 20:9 devoured = leaving them neither root nor branch.

Rebecca_D, through the course of many of our discussions it never dawned on me that you believed this way. I also believe that all men will fo to sheol to await resurrection becasue this is what the bible teaches.
---Ryan_Z on 5/11/07

Ryan: Yes this is the real me. And yes I really did post that. And yes I have always beleived this way. I can't remember how many replies I've done that says the same thing during the 4 years I've been on CN. Why does this surprise you that I wrote that and believe that way? Many people don't believe that way, but are speechless when I back up my statements with scripture.
---Rebecca_D on 5/11/07

The bible tells us some things are not worth discussing an debating. I do intend to follow that suggestion but here are some scriptures ,I would like to share with all who are interested. They are in your bible, as well. I Corinthians chapter 15, I Thess chap 4, 1 Tim chap6. Learn to study to show yourselves approved. If you are still in doubt get with a mature christian, a good well-versed pastor or anyone who undertands the Word of God fairly well.Seek the truth and you will be set free. Peace

When a christian dies, they don't go to heaven right then. Think about it, how can the dead in Christ rise first if their already in heaven? And besides, the bible tells us that there is no one in heaven but God, Jesus, angels.
---Rebecca_D on 5/11/07

Rebecca_D have you always believed this way or is this a new revelation for you? Is this really you? This doesn't sem like something you would say.

(Matthew 10:28),

The wicked dead will eventually have a resurrected body(the second death)(Daniel 12:2)(Revelation 20:5,6,11-15), hideous no doubt, this happens AFTER the 1,000 year reign of Christ on earth... until then, just their soul is in hell. God Bless!

HELL= A seperation from GOD.

(Ashley,3) Yes, JESUS (YAHUSHUA) paid the Ultimate Price for our sins. But, we as His followers, also have a price to pay as it were. That is, BESIDES loving first the LORD GOD and our neighbour as ourselves, to DENY the FLESH and walk in OBEDIENCE and in HOLINESS. The BIBLE clearly states that WITHOUT HOLINESS, NO MAN SHALL SEE the LORD. That DOESN"T mean "CHRIST's own holiness for us". It means for us to learn daily to live in holiness by the Power of the HOLY SPIRIT (RUACH Ha KODESH)!

Ashley, How does the info in your new reply to my previous posting nullify what I explained last time? I just did not fill in all those extra details. It does not CHANGE the TRUTH of what I stated! The things you accuse ME of are the SAME reasons why some people do not ACCEPT the TRUTHS of Hell and the eternal Lake of Fire. So that these people can live in their "pet" sins and not "worry" about facing an eternal consequence. JESUS (YAHUSHUA) Himself WARNED of Hell and it's horrors.
---Gordon on 5/11/07

(Ashley, pt.2) How can you bypass what JESUS (YAHUSHUA) HIMSELF said about Hell? JESUS (YAHUSHUA) warned of the FIRE THAT NEVER DIES, fires that BURN but DO NOT CONSUME (as in the Burning Bush), WORMS that do not die, DARKNESS, WEEPING and GNASHING of TEETH! LOOK THESE WORDS UP in a Concordance and YOU do some MORE RESEARCH on HELL. You will come to the SAME TRUTHS as I did!!!
---Gordon on 5/11/07

Hey Gordon. what bible are you reading. you have just bypassed two key things that the Savior taught would happen before anyone returns to God's kingdom. The judgment and the resurrection. What, you don't like those, so you just ignor them as if they don't exist. Don't worry, you are not alone. many people ignor scriptures showing them they are wrong because they do not like truth. they prefer to listen to the false teachings of men over God. that way they feel no guilt over openly sinning against God.
---ashley on 5/10/07

At man's death, his flesh-and-blood body is buried in the ground,or is destroyed in some other way. And IMMEDIATELY at death his SOUL goes DIRECTLY to Heaven or Hell. In Heaven man receives a NEW PERFECTED body that will NEVER get sick or die. In Hell, the lost will experience corruption of their bodies: fire, worms, tortures by demons, etc. but they will never die. There literally will be "no rest" for the wicked. Later ALL in Hell will be cast into the Lake of Fire which burns forever.

Here, in my opinion, is what the Bible teaches. In 2 Pet 3:7 + 10-12 it tells us that the earth will be destroyed by fire in the day of judgment.
v 9 > punishment of umjust is reserved until
judgment day >> they do not burn in
hell at death.
cf. Mat 13:30 + 38-40
Mat 25:31-34 + 41+46

People destined for heaven will receive their new boies at the time of the first resurrection.
---Pierre on 10/21/05

Do the people in heaven receive new bodies? I say because these bodies are earthly and not heavenly bodies.

Parables are both truth's and true at the same time when used by Jesus Christ.

The bodies of unbelievers will burn in torment, [their souls & spirits in hell first], then the bodies, minds/souls, and their spirits, in the lake of fire for eternity, feeling every second of their torment, but like the burning bush, they will not be consumed.

Everyone lives forever, the question is where!

It is the second death and it is forever to be separated from God. It is eternal because it will be the last thing you ever remember.
---Evelyn on 9/16/05

The reason some people think that this story was not a parable is because in parables Jesus used to say things like 'there was a certain man'. In this one He gave him a name.
---Xanthi on 8/23/05

Kyla: If you go back to the archives you will find that some id that story as a Parable, not to be interpreted literally; others think it is a real story. Study it for yourself and decide.

In hell, where he (a rich man) was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus (a begger) by his side. So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my toungue, because I am in agony of this fire.' (Luke16:23-24)(NIV)

The punishment> death will be everlasting NOT
the "punishing" ditto for the fire, the final result is the destruction (ashes) of unjust not their "roasting in hell" FOREVER! But, like always you are free to disagree.
---Pierr7958 on 8/22/05

JUDE 7 tells about SODOM/GOMORRAH suffering from "eternal fire/unquenchable. They did. Are they still burning? NO!
FOREVER = for the duration of an event
1 SAM 1:22,28
In this case FOREVER means for S' lifetime
JOHNA 2:6 FOREVER in this case means 3 days
---Peter on 8/22/05

A closer look at the meaning of FOREVER
I suggest in this case it means that the fire will burn until everything combustible will be burnt up and it will go out.
Jer told us that Jerusalem would be burnt up by an "unquenchable fire" and it was. Is it still burning today? NO! TBC
---Pierr7958 on 8/22/05

When a grave is occasionally exhumed, the remains are not generally charred. The same Greek word (hades) translated as HELL is also rightfully translated as THE GRAVE. (1 Cor 15:55) The concept of eternal burning torment is not of God.

Jesus, by passing through death, destroyed him who had the power of death, that is, the devil. The wages of sin is death. Jesus was made sin with our sin and he died. In the resurrection, death was swallowed up in victory. It sounds to me like Father wants us to focus on who Jesus is and what He did in redemption. In the famous words of Paul (penned under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost), "I am determined to know nothing among you save Jesus Christ and Him crucified."

Judgment of this world (judgment day)~ when Jesus was lifted up John 12:31-33

Ashes are found under the altar of sacrifice ~ the altar of sacrifice was the cross where our once for all sacrifice was lifted up and the wrath of God consumed the good and the evil (even our righteousness was as a filthy rag) in Adam..

Fire burns until all "combustibles" (wood, hay, stubble) are burned up ~ where no wood (hewn down man...Adam) is, the fire goes out (Prov.).
---Linda_Smith on 8/21/05

..."If any man worship the beast and his image, an receive mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same will drink of the wrath of God,...and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone...And the smoke of their torment ascends up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receives the mark of his name. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." Revelation 14:9-11; 20:15.
---Eloy on 8/21/05

During the earthly ministry of Christ, Mark 9:39-50. Here Christ is telling us that a sinners body would be like a worm that dieth no more. Also that the fire is never quenched. Please remember that this was to Israel during Christ's earthly ministry and not for the body of Christ. So don't go cutting off any body parts.

Please, please! You are entitled to your opinion but if you believe that God will ROAST the unjust with an ever burning fire and regularely check the heat to make sure the temp remains at max., if that is your GOD, who is LOVE, please study and pray some more.
---Pierr7958 on 8/21/05

I don't necessarily understand all of the meanings of things in Revelation, such as the Lake of Fire, but, I do know that scripture says the torment will last eternally. The body will not burn up and go away, that is annihilationism. Those who go into the lake of fire will suffer torment for as long as God exists, like it or not.
---tommy3007 on 8/21/05

I couldn't find anything about the body, but Revelation does say Satan and his angels will be tomented both day and night. Hell is also somewhere where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have to have a body to gnash the teeth, I'd say. I don't think the God who burned a bush without consuming it will let the unsaved escape the same treatment. The worst will be the absence of God's presence. All in all, it will be absolutely miserable.
---julie3763 on 8/21/05

What about the 'unquenchable fire'? It simply means that the fire can't be put out or 'quenched' until it goes out by itself, after it has consumed everyhing combustible.
Mat 10:28 Jesus said that sinners will burnt up completely>> the wages of sin is DEATH not eternal punishing. Rom 6:28
EZE 28:18-19 Satan to be destroyed
NAH 1:9 Sin will be destroyed
