How To Fleece The Flock

Can Robert Tilton be trusted? I know about the show from years ago about the dumpster, and the letters from people being disposed of in that fashion. I just ordered his book "How to be Rich". Is it true that God wants us to be rich?

I would not phrase it like that:Does God want us to be rich" but he wants us to be wealthy enough where we want to have to lie, cheat and steal to puy our bills and eat. Some Christians in the bible were rich.We could do a lot of good if we were wealthy/rich. The only thing I fear with riches is making it our God. It is easy to do that. I think. I like the things that money can buy and what it can do to make our lives easier but it can be a demon, also. It can bring pain and heartache too.

Maybe about all of us here blogging are already rich compared to most of the rest of the world and we should be grateful.

1 Timothy 6:3-6, "If any man teach otherwise, ...supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain."

why would God want us to be rich? He didn't even have a place to lay his head. God tells us to lay up riches in heaven because the riches down here will be burned up. I wouldn't believe anything Tilton said.

'The love of money is the root of all evil' states the Bible and you will find that the institutionized religions are full of people like Tilton. In the old days, they used to sell indulgences to raise money, nowaday, they preach tithing - both practices having been born of twisted scripture.

We break a commandment if we're putting money before God. Money is nice to have, it makes life a little easier to live and not have to worry how we'll pay our bills.
But being blessed spiritually is much more important.
According to his profile, the Pres. of CN earns $200,000+. He works hard and earns it! I don't have a problem with that.

Amen, good sermon DoryLory! God wants us to prosper in every area, health, love, spirituality, and yes even finances! However as DL says, all must be put in perspective with God always 1ST!
I read many requests for prayer of all kinds on the prayer blog. Nothing wrong with asking for prayer for health, faith etc, OR finances.

Some people have money through family or investments or just work, HOWEVER we cannot worship this money.
I've never seen a Brink's truck following in a funeral procession!
To try to manipulate God for money is abominable, and Tilton is one of the worse offenders.
Blade, stear clear of ones like him. Ask God for the discernment to tell the real ministers from charletons like Bob Tilton.

Just because someone has a TV ministry does not mean they are trustworthy, neither does it mean they are money grabbing vulchers. We need to discern what is good and what is bad (Philippians 1:10). When a minister of the Gospel errors from the ways of God, they must prove themselves before being restored to any sort of a ministry position. I believe his repentence should be public and obvious. The Bible teaches that respect must be earned.

The Bible DOES NOT say that "money is the root of all evil". What it does say is that "... THE love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." (1 Timothy 6:10) God has a problem with greed which is the love of money, not "money" in and of itself. That's why He wants our heart to be right before we seek prosperity (3 John 2). God wants us to have our priorities right.

1 Timothy 6:17 - "COMMAND those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant not to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share."
---DoryLory on 8/22/05

God does not have a problem with His people having money. He does, however, have a problem when money has His people (ie: when money has more importance in their lives than He does.) The above verse says He gives us "things" for our enjoyment. Is this not just common sense? What kind of loving father wishes hardship on his children?

"THE blessing of the Lord brings wealth" (Proverbs 10:22)

"... POVERTY is the ruin of the poor." (Proverbs 10:15)

Yes, there have been abuses in this area but that does not nullify the fact that there is a true Biblical message of prosperity. We need to pray for a wise and discerning heart (1 Kings 3:12) and let the Lord guide us.

Regarding Bob Tilton ... I haven't followed his ministry for at least twenty years so I'm not in a position to give my opinion except I will say that just the title of his book causes my eye brows to go up. Has he repented? Be discerning.

Unlike Samson who laid his head in the lap of Delilah and compromised himself, Jesus lays His head in His bride. He never compromised His mission to redeem His bride out of the world.

If we ever understood just how bankrupt in Adam we were, we would understand just how rich we are in Christ. We were so poor in Adam that we didn't even have an offering to offer God. He had to make Himself an offering.

Also, Marla, the word does not say that money is the root of all evil. It says that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

Shira, when Jesus said that about having nowhere to lay His head, He was not speaking of being impoverished. When He walked the earth, He was the richest man on the face of it because He not only had a money bag that was never empty (even though Judas the thief was stealing out of it), He was the fullness of the Godhead in bodily form. The only time Jesus became poor was when He became poor with OUR poverty in Adam on the cross. We, through HIS poverty, are made rich.

A dear friend sent me a song a while back. The lyrics went like: "would Jesus wear a rolex watch?", etc. Recall Jesus' words after he told the rich young man to sell all that he has and to come follow him? Then he would have riches in heaven, where neither moth nor corruption nor thieves can break in and steal. The man could not part from his riches and follow Jesus, but turned and went away weeping, and Jesus said, "how hard it is for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God."
---Eloy on 8/22/05

Marla you say 'The Bible clearly states that money is the root of all evil.' Actually it doesn't, it says that the LOVE OF money is the root of all evil. There is a difference.

Blade: You better believe God wants us to be "rich"; however, don't let materialism become mixed up with the Word of God. Never rely upon man for your answers. Only God, through the teaching in His Word, has the answers to our questions. More than ever before in history, we need to rely upon Scripture. Find a balanced, Bible believing, discipling church and see for yourself. Blessings!

Moderator - Yes, God wants us to be rich Spiritually. If we get blessed financially, that is secondary.

If someone wants to give for the sake of Christ, there is many foundations that are in great need of help. Check their organisation, if they are good, then support them. God wants us to be humble and give of ourselves to others. The Bible clearly states that money is the root of all evil. If he wants someone to prosper I do not think you will need to do it through reading a book but rather through prayer for God's will in your life.
being rich does not have to be financial. I am rich and I am one step from living on the street but I am rich in God's love
