That is true, but, the use of the Holy Chrism ("anointing oil") was introduced to the Christian Church from the existing Old Testament practice, as Saint James mention the use of it (James 5:14, 15). Yes, the external elements of the Old Covenant (Sabbath Observances, Feasts Days, Dietary restrictions, etc) have been passed away, but one can not deny that many aspects of New Testament Christianity has it's roots in the Old Testament (i.e., take Holy Baptism/Eucharist for instance).

There is nothing wrong in preparing the Holy Chrism as a mixture of olive oil and aromatic essences, following the pattern in Exodus 30:22-33. Such is the practice in the Eastern Churches.

In IC.XC.,

The Mighty Sword,The Bible tells us not to use the compoud of oils made for anointing the Temple, all the vessals and other things in it,Priests and sons, for if one does punishment shall befall them. Exodus 30:31-33--,this shall be a holy anointing oil throughout your generations. Upon mans flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall you make any other like it,after the composition of it:it is holy and it shall be holy unto you. Whosoever compounds any like it,or whoever puts it on a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people. When man mixes Old Testament ordinances with Christianity they will be in the wrong with God,Christ nailed all of those to the cross with him and so they passed away. We must live by faith not OT rituals.

As written in the Bible, anointing with oils is a symbol of being set apart by the Holy Spirit for special purposes in God's Realm. Our biblical pure and blended anointing oils during biblical times were used for ceremony and to heal. Our Exodus 30:21-29 anointing oil is the exact biblical blending of myrrh oil, cassia oil, calamus oil, cinnamon oil and olive oil given to Moses by the Lord.

God never changes.

No ceremony to make oil. But there is a service to bless oil that is already made.
The oil comes in the bottle and christians meet together, along with the leader/pastor to pray over it.. We bring our own bottle of oil. The oil is than used as we so choose. It is not magic or anything. The oil symbolizes the annointing of the Holy Spirit. You can place the oil on an area of the body that is hurting or needs healing, then you pray. I drink a tsp if I have a cold or sore throat etc..for the healing effect. There are other uses for the oil.

aren't anointing oils a symbol of our faith? for it is not the oil that gives us our authority or power over demonic forces or gifts of the Holy Spirit, It is the power of the cross which Christ died on. When anointing another or self it is a symbol of our faith in God.

If using anointing oil makes one feel closer to God, then what's wrong with using it as just a surrogate, with or without symbolic significance? There's no need to always adhere to some masochist dogmatism.

Eloy, Stand Fast in this revelational knowledge that you possess. Myself, personally, I will continue to look for the spiritual in everything. IT is better then trying to do God's Will in the Flesh. God Bless and continue anointing yourself unto the Glory of God.

Bruce, yes, for consecration and sanctification, and to fortify against demonic forces, and when i am called to do special intercessory prayer, i anoint myself and pray.

Darlene, i understand. Many who are no-works and grace-only people discount scriptures which command us to work. And if they could they would remove the whole book of James from the Bible. They are sin-supporters and think nothing wrong with sinning, nor obeying Christ who commands us to sin not.
---Eloy on 9/26/05

Eloy, you are annointed with oil every day? Why? By whom?
---Bruce5656 on 9/26/05

Eloy,I believe in anointing with oil because it's an order in the Word.Sorry if you thought I meant that.I could never make light of anything in the Word.I was speaking of mixing oils in a ceremony but it still isn't the oil by itself but coupling it with the faith and obedience which pleases God.
---Darlene_1 on 9/25/05

i take the directions in scripture serious, and do not discount the anointing of oil lightly. Personally i am anointed everyday, and i also have fasted and then been anointed in churches along with the laying on of hands and prayed over more then once. It is God's way, and it saddens me to see people lose out by making light of his clear directions.

When people try to glorify "things"/rituals they deglorify the work of Christ on the cross. He did away with all the old practices and established faith with love instead. There is no selfcontained power in anointing oil ,power lies in obedience to God/the Word ,and the obedient faith ,in prayer, in Jesus Name, is what moves God.James5:15-the prayer of faith shall save the sick-.Jesus spoke against people corrupting the simplicity which is in Christ. Why make hard what Christ made easy?

Priest, everything is not funny. But this is.
When one thinks faith and the working of God lies in things you can join the Coppersmith.
Tell me what one single purpose does the/any oil represent Biblically.
The oil has no power at ALL.
These sideshow displays of trying to make people think it does is taking away from the Lord.
The oil is ONLY representative. Again there is no Power in the oil.
Stop trying to spiritualize and spectacularlize everything.
I am a Priest also.

Elder, sometimes it is best to handle Holy things of God in a Holy Manner. Everything is not funny.

No ceremony, but i pray over the prepared oil so the Lord can bless it, prior to it being used for anointings.

Part 5The special oil for the most holy place

God told Moses how to make another special oil. This oil used these spices: stacte, onycha, galbanum, and frankincense. They should use the same weight of each of these spices. They should mix them together like perfume. They should make some of it into powder. They should sprinkle some powder in front of the ark of the testimony. This is where God meets the priests. This place is most holy.

Part 426] And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony,
[27] And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense,
[28] And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot.
---rev on 9/23/05

Part 3

They should use the oil to anoint the holy things. They should put oil on the tabernacle, the ark of the testimony (the box for the Ten Commandments), the table of the showbread and the table's equipment, the candlestick and its equipment, the altar of incense, the altar for burning the sacrifices, the washing bowl, and the bowl's stand.

Part 2[22] Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
[23] Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,
[24] And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:[25] And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.

Part 1 God told Moses to mix some olive oil and spices together to make the special anointing oil. He should take a gallon of olive oil, 12 pounds of the spice myrrh, 6 pounds of cinnamon, 6 pounds of calamus, and 12 pounds of cassia. When they measure the ingredients, they should use the official weights and measurements.

The oil in the Bible,OT, was to be used for Prophets,Priests, and Kings when anointing them for service to God. Also it was to be applied to the Temple and vessels there but it's forbidden to use it for any other purpose. Now olive oil is used, nothing added to it.We are NT Christians and we don't adhere to OT practices. No ceremony.

If there is, it is misguided.
