Nightmares Mean Not A Christian

Saints please help me with this. I am saved, delivered and baptised by the Holy Ghost I believe. However, my pastor says I am not because I always have nightmares. I have always had them since I was a child. I have prayed for the Lord to reveal if it is His Holy Ghost in me or demons?

I have also had an occuring dream about demons. I have for years now dreamt about demons about to possess me, however when it is about to take place I pray the Lord's prayer and fight off the demon. I also physically fight hard to wake up and i do.
There was a posting regarding past occult situations. All i could say is that my xgirlfriend cast a spell on me by going to a witch doctor but I confronted her and told her that My real God is much powerful than hers and I prayed a lot.
Just pray before u go to sleep, I at times put on some Christian songs while I sleep and that also helps....also putting Jesus Christ' blood on my dreams as well. Hope this helps, please pray for all of us that have these dreams. God Bless you all

I would be looking for a new pastor and soon. Who does he think he is that he can play God? He must have a huge ego and he sounds too arrogant to be a pastor.
---obewan on 3/24/09

Your pastor should be basing his teachings on the Bible alone. No where in the Bible does it state that "demonic attacks" on a person mean they are unbelievers - if anything it says the opposite. Satan has no reason to go after unbelievers, he already has them - but he definitely makes it a point to pester those who believe, as these people draw his men away from him. Also, be aware that just because bad dreams happen (or anything bad) it doesn't mean that there has to be demons involved. Stress is a factor in bad dreams. Remember, the world stopped being perfect in the garden of Eden, there's going to be bad things that happen. When you have nightmares, PRAY. There is no power in man but that through the Lord, and you are HIS :)
---James on 3/23/09

that's like saying because your saved you shouldnt be attacked. a believer still has to deal with attacks of the devil by faith in God's word.
* prv. 19:23, "sleep untouched by evil.", Hos. 2:18, "sleep secure in peace.", Psm 127:2, "He gives His beloved sleep."
fight for it:
* before you go to bed at night, plead the blood of Jesus over your dreamtime.
* assign your guardian angel to be with you in your dreams to protect you against any nightmare.
* the name of Jesus, praise / an attitude of joy, the anointing, the word of God on our lips, praying in the spirit, continued resistance against the devil. - these are the weapons of warfare to bring every thought, every nightmare into captivity to Christ.
---opalgal on 1/4/09

I am currently battling the same problems but do not fear. I know that is easy to say but I think our faith is just being tested. I recently started cleansing my mind of sin and I have not dreamed in years. Now, every single night is a nightmare from the underworld. I think demons and satan are tormenting us in our dreams because they see us turning to God. The part that has been scaring me most latley is the real things that are happening to me like the other night. All I could remember of the dream was a demonic picture of Jesus being flashed in front of me.
---Bryan on 1/2/09

I must say yes, that pastors can speak not by the lord at times and do give their own opinions... but for the most part i do agree with some of the replies written here!
you are saved and the battle for your mind is spiritual. i fight these attacks at times too!
and friend it's not because you are not saved and filled with the Holy Ghost... but rather because you are and the devil is your adversary!
he will use any method to destroy you, even your dreams. problem with most Christians they rarely experience any attacks from demons or satan on their minds or physical bodies is because they are still flirting with the world and living partially for God!
---ROGER on 10/24/08

Dreams can be a form of fear that you have hidden inside that you have not dealt with maybe as a child and they will stop when you confront your fears.

Don't read demons into everything although it can be a way of oppression as someone has already mentioned.

people have what is termed as post traumatic disorder, when some thing happened which leaves flash backs occurring in the way of dreams.
---Carla3939 on 9/2/08

As to whether you are truly a Christian or not, that is a matter between you and the Lord.

There are so many possibilities as to why satan uses this method against you that I suggest you find someone (ask the Lord) to discuss the context of the nightmares with and to pray with and for you.

satan uses that which is most effective against a believer until through Christ you have overcome it.

My experience in dealing with such matters is that he would not waste his time attacking someone whom had nothing within them for him to fear.
---Simon on 9/2/08

The proper term for what you are suffering is "demonic oppression". A Spirit-filled Christian cannot be demon possessed. Light and darkness cannot dwell in the same place. However, what this means is that somewhere in your life or in your generations, a door was opened that has licensed the enemy to torment you. You find the event, problem solved. I participate in a ministry called Cleansing Stream that was founded by our denomination's president, Jack Hayford. The whole ministry, while it is often referred to as a "deliverance ministry" is dedicated to helping believers get rid of their baggage and that of their generations and learn to walk in the Spirit and live victoriously in Christ.
---Pam on 9/2/08

There are no demons in you, if the living God is in you. Please don't pay attention to anyone who claims that demons or the devil can live in you right along beside Jesus who lives in you. However, demons can cause havoc in a believers life. Ofcourse, just because you get saved Satan does not just bow off and away he goes. Your nightmares happening since you were young is mostly demons causing them. Ask God to remove them from you. Keep this in mind... if you truly belong to God, Good sleep is just one of God's many blessings which He gives to His Saints. He promises us of this in His word. That is if you are not in sin. Then you do not sleep. Not a wink until forgiven. Have a good day.++
---catherine on 9/1/08

Nightmares have the same spiritual significance that other dreams have--namely, none (usually).
---katavasia on 9/1/08

Only God knows your heart, your Pastor is only human (he can't save you). Please don't let his words feed your worry.

I suggest before bed each night plead the Blood over you and if you have the nightmares again - really pay attention to what is scaring you and why. When we really look into our dreams, understand our dreams, they help us in our daily lives carnal and spiritual.

I will be praying in agreement with you for them to stop.

Put on the full armor of God, keep your faith strong, and know that Greater is He that is within you-than he that is in the world!
---Mary on 9/1/08

Your pastor is totally wrong....... If you have openly or privately taken Jesus Christ as your savior, "you are saved". Lord I hate it when pastors' play God.

Just Pray Hon, and besteadfast in your belief.

Right on Bro.Andy.I also replied to Sister Ann in the same vein--that indeed something evil may,(now be careful here)be at fault.I took a more subtle approach to Annbecause most people are either ignorant, and I say this in a humble way,or do not want to think about demons. Derek Prince is gone now. Will you join me in intercessory prayer that God will send more harvesters into the field of deliverance? I know of many people who NEED deliverance, but are squeemish or,down-right afraid of the subject. I want to be a deliverance minister, and am now in the process of preparing myself to help God's people.
---Danelle on 9/1/08

You are saved..you have the authority over those dreams. I would speak against them by the name of Jesus. Put on the Word of God at night via CD and do not watch anything that causes fear. no movies..no stories. Refuse to fear. Think on good things. Also...put the Word of God in your mouth.
---melanie on 9/1/08

If you are having demonic nightmares,it does not mean that you are not a Christian. I know of many Christians who have demonic nightmares and I suggest they see a deliverance minister. What we should realize is that we are most DEFINITELY not ALONE down here. There are evil forces at work in our lives, the BATTLE is on a daily basis. Please talk to a trusted minister, preferably in the field ofdeliverance. It won't hurt to try.If you are reluctant to do this, then I suggest that you fast and pray regularly.

I aso have demon nightmares, I was hopeing to find other Christians who have had nightmares of the same type. All I can think of is Satan is trying to steal my faith. How about anyone else?
---ann on 9/1/08

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your lord and Savior and repented of your sins and asked him to come into your heart than yes you are saved and sealed with the holy spirit. But that does not mean that you wont struggle with things. We have an enemy who roams the earth like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. He wants to keep us in the dark so to speak to be full of fear and hopelessness. He wants us to believe we are not saved because then we won't use the power Jesus has given us to fight the enemy with the word of God. While weeping may remain for a night, rejoicing comes in the morning! You need to surround yourself with people who can encourage you and teach you and who can pray with you.
---Lori on 8/20/08

Simple! Sometimes, God guides our dreams, but mostly they are made by the mind. Not everything is in direct control of God, and if he was, we'd probably didn't had free will.
---Anoymous on 3/29/08

dear, sweet sis or bro: indeed your nightmares have nothing to do with you being saved or lost. however it might be that you have demonic attachements and that you need deliverance, my guess is that your pastor does not believe in this anbd that is why he "in good consience" trys to help you with repentance. this wont work, a good book i advice to people to read is "they shall expell demons from Derek Prince start there and pray God to help you further.

Your pastor is WRONG, leave that church right away.

The reason your thoughts are being attacked is because you have a good conscience (good sense of righteousness). There would be no reason for satan's demons to attack anyone who was serving iniquity, but since the devil can have no hold on a righteous man, satan seeks to torment you so that you will be convinced that you cannot have salvation either, DON'T be DECIEVED. Get to know and accept yourself.
---greg on 3/21/08

My understanding is that dreams come from the subconscoious (conscience). There is something that you have always believed/felt that you could have prevented, but, as a child (I realized from personal experience after 51 years), we have NONE within reason.

But something very special has happened. God was working all our lives and taught us CONSCIENCE and LOVE.
---greg on 3/21/08

Prior 2 nightmares I suffered health problems leading 2 anxiety. Anxiety #1 cause nightmares I fear also,Satan wants fear so u won't sleep. Psalm 91 every night. The content? Write dreams down! Fight with prayer & Word, the shield of faith & sword of Truth. Pray over your room before sleep & cast out evil in Jesus name. There was something in my room from a tribe & God said get rid of it. Get ANYTHING out of your room that doesn't belong. Job had nightmares and did NOTHING wrong!

EVERYBODY has nightmares. It's perfectly normal.

Night terrors, on the other hand, are a sign of panic disorder. They can be medically treated.

Your pastor needs a good ecclesiastical tongue-lashing for even suggesting what he did.

I'd report him to his superiors. The man has some nerve! (Or faulty theological training.)
---Nancy on 12/3/07

Demons can torment you, but I would seek a doctor. My son suffers from recurring nightmares and it turns out that in his case, the nightmares are linked to growing pains. When you have pain during sleep, your mind pulls an unpleasant memory from your mind and twists it into a suitable nighmare. But if you stop the pain, the nightmares also go away.
---lorra8574 on 6/19/07

P2: There are many other reasons to why you might be having nightmares that have nothing to do with the demonic. However, one more thing that helped my son - he sleeps better when he says his prayers first, especially the Guardian Angel prayer. This helps to settle his mind and put pleasant thought in his head before he goes to sleep.
---lorra8574 on 6/19/07

Pray for your pastor & the right church & don't get discouraged. Not all nightmares are bad or from Satan. God may allow nightmares to show issues that need attention. Nebuchadnezzars dream, Daniel 4 is a ex. The King told Daniel that he was afraid after dreaming. It was a dream from God warning the King to change or he would lose his Kingdom for a period. Nightmares appear negative & there is fear, but look closer at the dream calling you to do something new. Change is scary, not necessarily negative.

It is true nightmares can come from ourselves and not demons. Those who have had demonic attacks in the form of nightmares though, know the difference. There is a big difference.
---Matthew on 2/6/07

Saints are in Heaven. Those of us on earth merely aspire to sainthood. However, I can help you. Ignore your pastor and see a doctor. Nightmares can sometimes be caused by our sleeping brain's interpretation of pain. Sometimes young children will suffer recurring nightmares that have become associated with growing pains that are occuring when they are sleeping. Some medications can help until the association is broken. If there is another underlying cause - your doctor may help with that too.
---lorra8574 on 2/6/07

Note that I am not saying that the devil cannot torment people for extended periods of time, but that is not common and usually is not limited to nightmares. Seek the normal before the paranormal solutions. Lastly, having nightmares are not a sign that you are not saved, unless they reflect a guilty conscience for something you did and knew was wrong. You would know it if that were the case. God Bless and Keep You, and may all the Saints pray for you in your hour of need.

Remember, most importantly, that God loves you in a huge way you can never possibly imagine. Jesus suffered nightmares in the desert, Jesus, of course, being entirely free of sin. Many well-known Christians have suffered nightmares. Job suffered terrible afflictions, and felt abandoned by, and lost to, God, and yet we know God loved him all the time. Don't lose your sense of balance over it. Keep praying, ask for forgiveness, and don't ever forget how much God loves you!

Lily, I've had certain nightmares since I was a child. They involve pit bull dogs. When I was a child I witnessed a pit bull kill my dog. Ever since then I have nightmares about them. My dog was killed when I was about 10 years old. So I've been having these nightmares for 22 years. Then about 4 months ago my neighbors brought home 2 pit bull dogs. My nightmare continues.

Lily, your dreams can NOT hurt you. Even if they are nightmares, they are nothing more than dreams.

Between the covers of the Bible accounts for over 2000 years on two continents, there are fewer than a dozen dreams of ANY spiritual significance.

What does this tell you?

Dreams MIGHT be a clue to some of your own issues--but don't go to your pastor with them. He sounds like an absolute JERK!

Lily your pastor is deceived. There are many Christians who deal with demonic attacks. It's nothing more than scare tactics and an effort to steal our joy and lower our faith. Even Jesus had the Devil himself appear before Him. Go to a different Church. To say that a Christian cannot have nightmares is unbiblical. Again go to a different Chruch and stick in God's word.

Col. 2: 15 "And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." Disarmed! At the heart of all mightmares is the spirit of FEAR - False Evidence Appearing Real! The solution to the spirit of fear is to face it with the truth that it's simply False Evidence Appearing to be Real. Tell the devil he is just a scare and he shall flee!

Hi; I feel for the person who is treated so badly by her minister! Some "minister" that is! I was thinking to myself last night of how I need to let go of an ex I still love. Last night I dreamed he was dying and he wanted to re-marry and I said not yet. Usually when I wake up I miss him. This time I felt like peace in letting him go. :)
---Mary on 9/27/06

That seems like an unorthodox belief that your pastor holds. If your pastor gives you more trouble about your nightmares, I would switch congregations. Making you feel guilty about your unconscious mind is NOT a very Christian thing to do. A counselor will either help you stop the nightmares or at least help you learn to cope with it. There are counselors who are trained not only in psychology, but with counseling along religious lines. Perhaps you may be able to find one in your area.

Dear Lily,
I am 16 years old, and have had nightmares since I was little too. Satan used to try and scare me with them, so I would believe that I was wrong with Jesus. He used fear and doubt to get me away from Jesus. He still gives me dreams like that, to scare and discourage me. Because you are questioning if you are saved or not, you probably are, and Satan is trying to use confusion on you. Keep the faith, and know that Satan will do these things to you.

As previously said so well, we all have them at one time or another. Though, I don't think nec. the devil or a bad meal. Could it be something from the Lord? I've had dreams that seemed frightening at the time, and later the circumstance happened in real life. It's as though the Lord prepared me to walk through the trial. Perhaps He's made you particularly sensitive. Ask Him - though distressful now, could be a blessing in disguise.

I have no idea. I have always had them since I was 8. Some are prophetic and others enigmatic. I am so sorry I do not have help. Today I had very bad news in the office and that particular colleague disclosed them to me!!!

Rebecca, my mother and daughter have both been badly affected this way by medication. My daughter was given tablets for anxiety which gave her very frightening nightmares. Dr. said to stop taking immediately. Mother was given tablets in hospital for depression during a very long stay. These gave her horrendous hallucinations whilst awake, in addition to bad dreams. These did not cease until months after medication was stopped.

Although I like some of the answers and it is true I haven't read all of them there are a few things that must be considered. 1. All dreams have interpretations given to us by God (Daniel); 2. God protects us, pray to him; 3. we are not only spiritual beings but physical with biochemical processes. Psychology books help with some dream interpretations (Jung and I believe, CS Lewis. Once these dreams are "interpreted" they stop.

Lily...I suggest that you also consider getting into another church. It sounds to me like you are in a church which is very legalistic and which teaches you that you are saved by works (baptism, speaking in tongues, how you dress, etc). I am a pentecostal, so don't think I don't believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. But, you need some strong guidance from an older Christian woman.
---Sally on 9/27/05

Lily...I understand your question as I also have dreams. They are occasionally what some would call nightmares. But, in almost all cases, I wake up knowing exactly what the meaning of the dream is and what God has been trying to say to me. The gift of interpretation of dreams has helped me throughout many trials in my life. At times, I have also known where some of the dreams come from. Dreams like what you are talking about are not from God.

Try this: If the same nightmare is recurring, play out the ending in your mind before going to sleep. Pray at bedtime and turn your troubles over to God, he will take care of them while you sleep.

For years I had nightmares every night. I got rid of them by praying: "I plead the blood of Jesus over my mind, my will, and my emotions. Hi, I think it is shameful that your pastor would say such a thing and you must get out from under him.I know that people who have suffered rejection in childhoodcan have nightmares but even if this is the case it would have nothing to do with your standing in Jesus.

Lily, I too do not believe this pastor is very well learned. sometimes they go to this schools that teach demonic things and come away worse then when they went. Your nightmares have nothing to do with your salvation. Like Bruce mentioned, it could be sins that are there from past times or just movies you saw when young. No one can occupy the same place with Christ. You are His temple.
