Not Trusting God If Take Medicine

My ma has trouble with anexiety. She also has trouble with taking medication. She feels like taking medication makes her a weak person and like she is not trusting God with the Dr's (who is a christian) decision to medicate her for anexiety. Does anyone have any insight?

I see there is too much controversy here.

Anxiety disorders should be treated before they become dangerous. And if you need to take valium, methadone for the rest of your life, I suppose you will.
I would like to know how you separate Psychology from medications. I'm not badmouthing it. I really do not see any difference. Anxiety, bulima, anorexia, obsessive compulsive disorders are all treated with Psychology and medications.
---NorthPole on 3/24/07

The soothing effects from the drug last around four to eight hours. But methadone stays in the body much longer -- up to 59 hours, according to the advisory.
Since the effects wear off quickly, but the drug is still in a patient's blood, many patients have a tendency to take more and overdose.
Methadone kills by affecting the brain's respiratory centers.
After ingesting too much, a person's body can basically forget to breathe.
---SouthPole on 3/22/07

Doctors often prescribe the drug because it's not as likely to be abused as other opiate-based drugs, which include morphine, heroin and oxycodone hydrochloride, more commonly known by its brand name, OxyContin.

Methadone doesn't give a "big rush" or as much of a feeling of euphoria as other opiates.

OxyContin -- that was the no-no drug," Methadone, it can be abused. But so can a lot of drugs.

Addictive drugs that treat addiction, do you take the addictive drugs for the rest of your life? And are you really set free?
Drugs for addiction are psychology.
How do you you separate the two and say you're free and the old man is dead?
---SouthPole on 3/22/07

Quite the contrary. I'm not making fun of mental disorders.
I would like a straight answer from those who oppose psychology, say it's not Christian; but then on the other hand, advocate the use of drugs for the mind to make it through the day.
I would like to know how they can separate the two? Psychological drugs from psychology?
---NorthPole on 3/22/07

I would like a straight answer about how you can be delivered, totally set free in Christ and dependent on drugs for addictions at the same time.
I'm not advocating not taking drugs, meds for mental well being.
How can put down psychological treatment when you're using it, and claim freedom from it, all at the same time?

Valium is addictive. The user builds a tolerance and feels the need to increase the amount they take to achieve the same high. Over time Valium becomes physically and psychologically addictive.

Side effects of Valium are clumsiness, sleepiness, some experience abdominal cramps, blurred vision, dry mouth, racing heartbeat / palpitations, shaking / slurred speech, urination problems, convulsions, hallucinations, memory loss, trouble breathing, staggering / trembling, headache or confusion.

Methadone, a silent killer of patients with chronic pain.
Increasing numbers have been found dead with methadone in their bloodstreams for weaning addicts off heroin.
Methadone, almost none of its victims had been a heroin junkie.

Methadone, "latest fad" for doctors specializing in pain management.
Prescribing methadone has increased, so has the number of people who ended up on the cold, stainless steel examination table of the coroner's office with the drug in their systems.

There isn't medication in heaven bc there will be no sickness. On earth now there is. You should NEVER advice people with legitimate mental disorders against medication, or down this practice.NORTHP)God gave doctors intelligence to heal the sick. You get an infection, you take medicine.Your response sounds like you are making fun of mental disorders. I am a Christian, & have been attacked mentally. God's will wasn't to go "POOF, be healed". He guided me into the care of a health professional.

Anxiety, Sleep problems are not the same as having cancer. I mean, God does give us wisdom and we are not to ever test God. I tell you what, I can only testify by my own life. If God through His power, counseling and so forth, can bring me around, need I say more. [Pray]
---catherine on 3/22/07

Those who say psychology is not of Christ, but take psychological/mind altering drugs....
Psychology will not be needed in heaven, nor psychological drugs.
Valium, methadone, all the drugs of choice that people rely on to get through their day, along with Jesus. Jesus and drugs. It is a testimony. Would you have Jesus if you took away your mind altering drugs?
How do you say you are delivered and set free; psychology is evil, but you're dependent. Someone, please explain the difference.

I believe that doctor's hands and medications can be instruments of God to help us lead healthier lives. She is not weak for needing medical help. Please take care of yourself also. I know you must be very worried about your mother. Blessings.

I suffer acute anxiety which was diagnosed after 2 1/2 years of acute sickness upon attempting to get off Valium. I am so thankful to God that I am now being treated. I went through the same thing as your Mum, thinking that I didn't have faith if I took meds ... I was so sick that I needed the meds to be able to think straight and therefore have faith again!!! I would never recommend that anyone just stop taking prescribed medication. Instead, I tell them to take a healing, health, and strength Scripture with every pill every time one is taken. Then just sit back and watch what happens.
---Linda6563 on 4/18/06

I agree with Bruce. God has given these Dr.'s knowledge to know what medicine is good and not for their patients. Dr.'s have to provide the best treatment they possibly can for thier patients. Its in the oath they state. Shee needs to trust her Dr.. And I agree, some Dr.'s need to get out of the field and some PA's need to become Dr.'s. But to me it sounds like God has sent her to a good Christian Dr. and to trust him on what he prescribes. If she still doesn't know get a second opinion.

God has total control of ALL healing. It can happen in 3 ways: 1. Preventative actions, (such as proper food intake and exercise), 2. Through medical channels, (such as medicines, doctors, etc.) and 3. Through Divine Intervention. (What is normally called, "Faith Healing.) To look at this any other way is to say her Christian doctor and any Christian in the medical field is in a constant state of sinning. Tell her she should take her medicine and "Praise the Lord" it's available.

Alan that is correct. All medications, whether herbal and other 'natural' supplements or prescription-only medicines can have contra-indications. Doctors rarely tell a patient about these or even state all the possible side effects so it is important that the patient reads ever word of the leaflets that come with some medicines. Even things as innocent as milk and cheese can be harmful with some medications. When in doubt, ask a chemist. They seem more prepared to discuss these things that G.Ps.

Good point karia, I never thought of it that way.

If she's suffering from anxiety she'd better take her medication ... those anxiety attacks aren't fun. Had them until I got back on Prozac, I also suffer from depression. I'm thankful to God for giving me the sense to use His doctors for healing me. I'm not weak, I'm back to normal and feel great.

Yes, that is my point, you are surrounded by people who are doing the research on the herbals. Yes, some of the packages may state recomended dosages, but they do not state the deadly interactions with some prescription meds. I am not against herbals, don't get me wrong, but they are too easily put into the hands of people who don't have the knowlege.

Care is needed with herbals.

Gingko Biloba is recommended for memory loss.

But it is dangerous toi use it in conjunction with tablets for low blood pressure.

Both dilate the blood vessels so the combination can be deadly

karia3875, I underatand your concern, but there are safe herbs to take for anxiety, and the bottles have the doeses on them of how much to take. Some examples are, chamomile, genseng, lavender, & valerian. I have done extensive research & study on this, and also married into a family of herbal specialists.

Tell your mom that God heals in many ways. By using doctors or taking medication is only one of those ways. Then, maybe you gently can ask your mom if she is trying to tell God how she wants Him to heal her? Then, lovingly tell her God's children can't tell father God how and what to do. He is God and works in his children lives as He pleases.

Noone can say no "side effects" to herbals. They are not federally regulated. Ephedra, Mah Hung, major heart damage. Kidney and liver damage done by people not getting the correct dosages.Very few people have a clue how to take them. The popular Melatonin, taken in the improper dose, mixed with certain prescription meds can be deadly. No one should be taking or telling someone to take herbals without a doctor supervision and lab tests to determine if the kidneys and liver can handle them.

Taking medicine is not wrong or a sign of weakness. I take meds too, it is humbling to have my illness. Paul talked about his thorn in the flesh. 2Cor.12:7

The foundation of anxiety and other associated mentol problems, is unresoved past problems affects humanlives. They might be spiritual or phyisical attached. The really answer of that is surrender your entire life to Jesus. Walk in holiness, equip yourself with the holy word of God and build your strong relationship with God throught daily prayer and devotion. Most of people who have anxiety, they are only sunday christian, and do not have a time with God for themselves for rest of the week days.

Anxiety is a sometimes crippling problem and I truly feel for your mother as I had anxiety troubles in the past. However, I disagree with her about taking medicine making one weak. I take seizure medication, and carry an inhaler and epi-pen for allergies. Without these I couldn't surivive and without doctors it wouldn't be possible for me to have them.

I thank God for the Dr's knowledge and the God given brains it takes to be one. Plenty of us would be dead without them, including me. I would have died at 10 years old without a dr.

I certainly pray that your mom is healed from her anxiety. Actually there are many good medications on the market and a few of the herbs which may help, but usually something stronger is needed. Be sure a psychiatrist prescribes, not just a family doctor....My name is Elsie too so maybe "that is a good thing". Blessings!
---Elsie on 9/26/05

just going without medicine isnt gonna help her be free of anxiety. but what she could do is take the pills and also before swallowing the pill speak the medicine of God's word for healing, or freedom from anxiety.
---jianra on 9/26/05

If she is afraid of taking medicine, she can take herbal remedies for it. Go to a health food store and ask someone there, or get a book on it, or look it up on the internet. Herbs work just as well, and there are no side effects.

Truly Jesus is the Great Physician. However, physicians are sanctioned in scripture:Colossians 4:14, "Luke, the beloved physician." cf: Jeremiah 8:22

If God did not want him to be a doctor, it would have been innapropriate to call him "beloved physician."

Doctors prescribe medicine because God has given men the wisdom to use things to effect a cure. Ultimatly, all wisdom, all knowledge, all healing is God given. Be it by miracle or through a human agent like a doctor.
---Bruce5656 on 9/26/05

Elsie, I certainly believe God has given us people with medical wisdom and medicine for our good. Oil, wine and herbs were used in NT for healing. See Good Samaritan, Luke 10:34-James 5;14 Glad your Dr. is a Christian. Perhaps he/she can help your mom undertand this gift for her use and to His honor and glory. I pray she will trust God is supplying her needs through meds. I take high blood pressure medication, which certainly helps me and I THANK GOD for His provisions.
