My Obese Pastor Wants $70

My church charges $70 dollars a person for the 12 weeks weight loss program. The pastor is still extremely obese. I have a hard time to understand how he feels so comfortable to preach us regarding discipline while he can not even set up a good example.

What weight loss program? Is he in charge of the program? Maybe he is doing it for himself. I once heard a preacher who was so fat, he had to sit down to preach. He died because he ate too much. He even told us that while he was preaching. All he preached about was smoking cigarettes. Talk about double standard.

I believe church leaders should be held to a higher standard because they need to be an example to others. God put us here for a purpose and suicide through eating is not Gods plan. In Matthew. Jesus spoke to the multitude. You have heard that it was said to those of old, you shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of judgment.
So diabetics who purposely kill will be guilty of suicide, which is murder.

I am more concerned with the $70 rather than your pastor not being able to lose the pounds. Your pastor is only human. He is not God, His weight issues are as real as yours. Be kind.Be patient. Be merciful. But why do you have to pay to lose the weight?

I would find a new church. It all sounds a little hypocritical to me unless the guy has lost some and is still loosing more.

Well I think he is trying to loose weight if he is planing the weight loss program. Some things just don't happen over night. And because he don't have a six pack it does not mean he can not preach on this subject or talk about it.

Pastors are not perfect because only God is Perfect.

You guys tickle me lolol. So many of us will question a pastors motives because they arent what we belive a pastor shoud be..unless he is teaching hersey of false doctrine, or being immoral. quit Judging your pastors by your standards and measure him by GODs, or ask him to let you walk one week in his shoes go with him 24-7 for 1 week then Judge him according to GODS word.

Hopefully the person who posted this has already discussed her concerns with the pastor. This type of question is only gossip and should be discouraged.

Peter, you sillwy willwy wabbit. How long has he been on the program? You know if he's extrememly obese as you say, then it's probably going to take a while for it to come off and for you to notice it. i mean like if someone is 300 lbs, and they lose 10 lbs, it may not be noticeable to others looking at him from the outside.

Overeating is not the only cause for obesity. There are chemical imbalances that cause it too. How would you like someone to judge you without all the facts? Have mercy, please!

I know this Pastor or I know one just like him.
Same thing happened about 2 years ago. I left that church for many more reasons than that. His church just lost their building and his ministry is going down in flames. He's still trying to keep a handful of people (About 10) under his influence. You would not believe what he is up to. Too much to discuss here. I can see that the Lord is catching up to him.

I believe the pastor should admit he has a problem in this area and have his staff agree in prayer with him.

Friends, don't you think we should show compassion & mercy to people(pastor)with a wt problem? When I became a Christian I gave up lust/sex,cigarettes,alcohol,drugs,and when stress hits...there's the food..esp.at church functions!I'm asking God to help me overcome the damage & have self control in this area too.Linda3957

Any pastor who actively preaches about discipline and isn't disciplined himself is leaving him/herself wide open to these questions. And your question is very legitimate.True, a medical problem may exist but also true, there is too much going in at one end and not enough be used.A lack of discipline is a definate handicap. Encouragemment and prayer is what he needs, Bro. John

Matthew 7:1-5, "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; "

One of the finest evangelical preachers I know is John Hagee. He clearly weighs close to 300 pounds.
---taylor on 10/26/05

It may be a case of, "Do as I say, not as I do." Also, it may be he's on medications that cause this. You best bet is to ask him - privately - why he isn't losing weight. Until you do, you won't really know the reason(s) and its just a 'guessing game' or gossip as to why he's not losing weight.

The Christian army is the only army who shoots their own wounded. We aren't knowledgeable regarding the Pastor's weight..just speculating the reason. How about prayer for the Pastor, and while we're at it, remembering to pray for forgiveness for OUR sins.

I think I know what he's doing with the money, like buying twinkies!
---Peter on 9/28/05

We cannot effectively teach what we don't know. Experiential knowledge is required.Maybe your pastor is really struggling in this area. Pastors are human too. True he should set the example of discipline. but wonder what would happen if everyone who is railing on him would take time each day to pray for him especially in this area??? God says "touch not mine anointed". You may not like him or what he does but you must respect his office or God will discipline you.

Maybe he has a weight problem which cant be dealt with by the programme. He may be aware of the ill effects of obesity that he wants to help others, even though the programme does not work for him.

If this is the only problem he has, it is not the church's problem but his. Lack of self discipline in eating, smoking, drinking, and you nameit shows weakness and lack of discipline. God gave him two arms to push away from the table and a brain to know what is good for this temple created by God. God willed him an earthly body to care for. He is responsible to God and His church flock to behave as a Child of God not a wimp.

Are you PERFECT in every way?
---BB on 9/28/05

I hope that you will find the courage to put this question to him personally as only he can answer it. I also have a hard time understanding his actions but I have an even harder time understanding that he has any takers for this 'service' he offers.
