sam: There is the false prophet in Revelations. Many will follow him and believe him. How will we know not to do the the Bereans...
The only way we know a true prophet from a liar, is holding it up to scripture.
---kathr4453 on 9/13/06

sam: Those secrets are still recorded in scripture. There is no NEW prophecy. If there was, and anyone claimed they had a special revelation from God that was not in scripture, how would you know if it were true or not.

I'm sure those who followed that self proclaimed prophet, Jim Jones, if they were here today, would tell you just that!!
---kathr4453 on 9/13/06

Paul says it best: in 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21 "Do not put out the Spirit's fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good." (NIV)Amos 3:7 "Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets."
---sam on 9/13/06

Jim - You are correct. The Holy Spirit takes up residence in a believer the very moment that person gets saved. Bless you.

Sam,Eph says:,Jesus Christ is made unto us,wisdom and knowledge, etc, through the Word of God.

To explain the trinity may help.
The Father ,Son & Holy Spirit, cannot work independently from one another. If you hear someone say something that is "NOT" in scripture, and they say, the Holy Spirit told me, and it has to do with End times or anything contradictory to scripture, """That is not the True Holy Spirit"". It's the unholy spirit of lies and deception.

John:Prophecy is future events. Those events have been recorded in scripture..through to Rev. Many Prophecies have yet to be fulfilled.

When someone says they have a word of knowledge, that's not in scripture,or says, God told me this would be your year of Jubilee, that's hooey! Jubilee was the day that Jesus rose from the dead. He paid our debt in full, those who have accepted his free Gift of "no balance due".

Prophesy has not ceased,It REMINDS us of what has already been written.

kathr4453 , What are you saying??? I don't understand you. (Joel 2: 28-31), Kathr, do you believe we are in the LAST DAYS? Yes, there are many false prophets out there, I don't pay them any mind, but God prophesies through His True people, OFTEN. I just don't understand what you posted, it doesn't make sense?? --Mrs. Morgan

kathr4453: You have no scriptural basis whatsoever to confirm that prophesy has ceased. The fact of the matter is, it takes one to know one.

Sam; Prophecy HAS ceased. But Prophe"s"y has not.
Someone needs to tell Benny Hinn, and Mr. Parsley flakes that as well. How much of their personal prophe"c"y has really come to pass?
The word of God is complete. All Prophe"C"y

before you are saved, the holy spirit is with you. When you are born again, the holy spirit is in you. When you are filled or baptized with the holy spirit he is upon you. or you could say you are filled, and given supernatural power for service.
---John on 9/12/06

Before you recieve salvation the HOly spirit is with you, after you recieve salvation he is in you. When you are filled or baptized as they say in the holy spirit, he is apon you. There is a difference. The first is for conviction, the second for salvation, the third to recieve power for service.

***It's not the final chapter on the subject of speaking in tongues. Men (and women)will be having their say until our Lord returns to settle this matter once and for all time. It's difficult to say how, when and where the modern tongues movement began. In many pamphlets and books I have examined opinions differ. We do know that the phenomenon of tongues-speaking is widespread, and it is likely that no issue in Christianity has caused as wide a split in modern times as speaking in tongues.***
---kathr4453 on 9/12/06

For the record, speaking in tongues, prophecy, and knowledge all exist in my church today. They will exist until that which is perfect, Jesus Christ, comes again.
---sam on 9/12/06

Kathrn...if you believe tongues has ceased then you also must believe prophecy and knowlege has ceased since they are mentioned in the same scripture...unless of course you pick out only part of the scripture that suits your itching ears. The entire Bible must be taken into context as a whole!

Helen: Philippians says, :be anxious for nothing, but with prayer and supplication, let your requests be made known unto God.
We obviously have to know what they are to let God know what we are requesting.
Helen: to say that one has not received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, because they don't speak in tongues is no different then Mrs. Morgan saying we can lose our salvation. Personal interpretation of scripture is what causes confusion in the Body of Christ. This is not what God wants.

Sam or Helen: If these groans are groans "which *cannot* be uttered", then they can't be uttered. Speaking in tongues would be uttering!!!
They can't be uttered, nor can the earth utter either. We're all in pain really until Jesus Christ comes and completely delivers the Whole of Creation including those who are His.
---kathr4453 on 9/12/06

Sam: The whole earth also groans as we too:
The definition of a groan is:
1 : to utter a deep moan indicative of pain, grief, or annoyance.

Is this what God is asking us to do??
Let's use our common sense please. Read the previous scriptures re: that verse.
---kathr4453 on 9/12/06

Helen: Please show me where it says: *I believe that Scripture teaches that every born-again Christian should go on and get baptised in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.*

You need to give 2 or 3 passages to show it is not you personal intrepretation.
Not just ones that you've intrepretated the way you want. Paul said" Do All speak in tongues? The answer is NO!
---kathr4453 on 9/12/06

Kathr4453 - I believe the whole of God's Word, and I believe that Scripture teaches that every born-again Christian should go on and get baptised in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Kathr4453 - God hears prayer in all languages provided it is to the Father through the Son. The gift of tongues is for private prayer ("we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Holy Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered" Romans 8:26); and for self-edification (sorry unable to find the Scripture for that -- I think it says something like "building yourselves up in the Holy Spirit"??).

Helen:Prophecy and prophesy are two different things. Prophecy is that which is already established. In other words, there isnt anything that can be added to Gods word. Prophesy is to re-iterate what has already been established.
Look at what Paul says in Romans 12:6 Having then GIFTS differing according to the Grace that is given to us, whether we prophecy, (already established) let us prophesy,(re-iterating) according to the portion of our faith. Its all done by faith, according to Grace.

Kathr4453 - To answer your last question, if you do not speak in tongues then you have not received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. You have the Holy Spirit because you are born-again, but that is not the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
---Helen_5378 on 9/9/06

Kathr4453 - I am sorry but what you are saying is not making sense to me. There is no set order as such for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and water baptism, both of which occur at some stage after salvation. Speaking in tongues is of course a gift from God, and it comes with the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Once baptised in the Holy Spirit one then has the gift of speaking in tongues. This Baptism is not the same as the initial infilling of the Holy Spirit at salvation.

To be born is to be given birth to, being born of God is to be Birthed by the Holy Spirit
What is born of flesh is flesh but what is Born of Spirit is Spirit. So being born again is Spirit filled.
To be baptized is to be emersed in water to be baptized in the Spirit is to be Emersed in Gods Spirit, Ye shall recieve power to be witnesses after the Holy Ghost comes upon you. The Holy Ghost in you is Spirit filled
The Holy Ghost on you is baptised The holy Ghost with you is Jesus.

Kathr4453. Very good observation. I only quoted what Jesus told his disciples. The anti christ will have all kinds of power alright but not for the kingdom of God. So, power for the kingdom of God would be a more proper answer. Jesus knew that the baptism of the Holy Spirit would give the disciples that power. Thus an evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit is power for kingdom of God ministry.

Helen: One last thing.(smile)
I was given a spiritual Gift when I was born Again. It is not tongues. I've never spoken in tongues, or do I have to my knowledge a special prayer language. But I do have a Gift. That Gift is empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Everyone receives a measure of the Holy Spirit when they are born again. This is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. If you receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, as evidence of speaking in tongues, just as the disciples in the upper room on the day of Pentecost, and as Jesus promised, then you have the infilling of the Holy Spirit.

Kathr4453 - The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is exactly as outlined in the Book of Acts. John, Those things you mentioned don't prove anything. It says in Rev that Anti-Christ will be doing great wonders and miracles.

2Tomothy 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses,so do these resist the truth, men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

I believe much of the Charismatic movement is a precurser or anit-christ movement.

They would rather have signs and wonders than to grow "In Christ", which is via the cross. The fellowship of His sufferings...

I know a religious cult that speaks in tongues. They have prophetic words as part of their rites (vows). Counterfeit gifts and miracles. If you are in a legitimate bible believing church (you can research it's credibility) and you've asked God for a good gift, Matt 7:11 'how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!'

To be filled with the spirit is to be endued with power from on high. it is separate from salvation. It is to equip saints with the power to witness and is not to be viewed as some sort of a trophy. It is apparent that one is filled by the way they live and serve the lord. If your truly filled with the spirit don't set around and waste time arguing with non believers. The first requirement to be filled is to believe it is for you. If you don't believe you will never receive.
---Ken on 9/8/06

How did they know in the Scripture? Seeing that the evidence can be faked we need better proof than someone speaking in tongues or prophesying. This proof is in Luke 24:49. Jesus tell the disciples to stay in Jerusalem until they are endued with power from on high. According to this verse it is ministry power that is the evidence. This also lines up with Mark 16:17-20
Are people getting saved, healed, delivered from sin and demons, pulled from darkness to light etc? That is evidence.

Why does it say there is only one baptism if there are more than that? It also says there is only one God but that includes the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Where does it say there are two different Baptisms? and that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is evidenced by speaking in tongues?

Amen, Helen...Shira, Helen is right. Having the Holy Spirit indwell in your heart and the baptism of the Holy Spirit are two different things. I was saved almost three years ago, and just this year was baptised in the Holy Spirit. Speaking in tongues doesn't necessarily mean you will automatically speak accepted languages of this world, unless God wants you to have that gift. I only speak in tongues in my prayer life, and it's no language I ever heard before...but I know God understands it.
