What Is A Stronghold
strongholds can be both negative and/or positive.
David would hide out in strongholds (places of refuge, like caves, when he was being pursued by Saul) and he even wrote in 2 Samuel 22:3 - My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my STRONGHOLD, my refuge and my savior - from violent men you save me.
There are other scriptures that speak of strongholds in the negative sense and we are hence encouraged to be set-free or delivered from them.
Great responses to this blog!!!

strongholds are mental emotional experiential mindsets that keep a person in bondage from spiritually growing in the Lord.
until the mind is renewed to think in line with God's word that brings liberty, everybody has them to one degree or another.

Greetings, i was just searching around about the word stronghold when i came upon this..I just recently started a ministry called "Releasing the Stronghold Ministries" so this is my opinion on stronghold. I've read several of the replies and they all are true. Stronghold is a place of security and shelter and what i teach about stronghold is,it is a justifiable place but not a place to become relaxed in. Situations cause one to go into stronholds. David in I Samuel 22:1-5 finds himself in a stronghold but is told by a prophet not to remain there. And that's the key don't remain in the stronghold but become so hungry for God that you leave and go to Judah (a place of praise). So be bless is my prayer

Rebecca hit it on the nose, Strongholds aren't easy to get rid of, but if one desires to get rid of the things that binds them down, then seek God and keep seeking him. A year ago I stopped gambling, seven months ago I stopped smoking, and three months ago I was delivered. Thank you Jesus, for all that believe are justified and cleansed of all their sins.

It seems to me that the Apostle Paul is saying that we are fighting a spiritual war against our wicked imaginations. Strong holds are like great stone forts. The strong holds of our mind are our carnal thoughts. Thoughts of various lusts of the flesh rather than holy and pure thoughts.
Paul is saying that our weapons for this fight are mighty through God. I believe these weapons are the word of God, the Holy Spirit, prayer, and even our faith.
Lord bless you,

The Apostle Paul speaks of "strong holds" in
2cor 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
2cor 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds,)
2co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ,

According to The Word of God, strongholds in the greek mean "Arguments". Which mean traditions, false teachings, vain philosphy or something that we have heard or held onto for years versus the truth of God's Word. When the Pharisees question Jesus concerning the washing of hands, the woman that were caught in the very act of adultery and questioning Jesus for healing on the sabbath because of the religious law, these are examples of strongholds.

Strongholds are anything that binds your spirit down. Won't let you be free, bound down. Strongholds can be something from your past that you haven't let go of it yet and it is hindering your spirit. Strongholds aren't easy to get rid of, but if one desires to get rid of the things that binds them down, then seek God and keep seeking him.

strongholds include mindsets."and it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck; and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the annointing."Isaiah10:27 and Isaiah58:6 very helpful.liz8687

Alan: I have heard of both definitions of stronghold. Beth Moore has a great Bible study on breaking free from of strongholds that bind you. I guess in our Christian walk we replace the strongholds that bind us in our spirit for the stronghold of Christ.

Joyce and rebecca ... and others ... this shows how we can have 100% opposing views of things!!!
The hymn "A safe stronghold id our God" indicates a safe place where we can be secure with God.
I had never previously heard the negative definition provided by R & J

a stronghold is something that keeps you bound, for example being addicted to something is a stronghold.

I thing what your friend is referring to is the use of a Stronghold from a secular mental health standpoint; it is an emotional Safe Haven, everyone needs some kind of one. In it you can relax and let your guard down instead of being keyed up or on edge all the time. From a religious stand point our strong hold is a personal relationship Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit put you troubles upon them to get the spiritual rest that you truly need.

A very basic definition of a strong hold is a "hiding place". It's in our mind, will or emotions and is a place where negative thoughts or emotions "hide" until the enemy is ready to use them against us.
Remember this is a VERY basic explanation. If you would like more please feel free to write me at Christianet anytime. Hope that helps.
