What Is A Revival

My husbands old school teacher invited us to her church for a revival. Can anyone tell me what they are all about. I looked on the internet and they are vague about themselves.

Only those who are dead require revival.
---francis on 7/7/10

Shira, there is the revival "service" to which Francis, Cluny and Lawrence refer.

And there is the movement of the Holy Spirit where confession and contrition is followed by renewal in one place. This phenomena is unexpected and unplanned and we came up with the name "revival" but in scripture is known as restoration seen in Psalms 80 and Lamentations 5.

The last large event of note was Brownsville which hosted a genuine move the the Holy Spirit, false spiritual perversions and event and experience seekers simultaneously

REVIVAL: A reason to keep you in church late every weekday in hopes that something spiritual will happen.
But what happens is you get so tired after that one or two weeks, that you take three days off from regular church to recover.
---francis on 7/6/10

Cluny:

It's better to admit that you're dead and need to be revived, than to be dead and either not realize it, or refuse to admit it. (Note how Jesus called the Pharisees dead men's tombs).
---StrongAxe on 7/6/10

Revivals are a church admitting it's dead.

They are nowhere in the Bible and were basically unheard of until 19th century America.

Revival is for the people of God that has became lack & lazy in spirit, not doing what's required for them to do, attending Church services, praying, Bible reading, witnessing etc. When they get back into doing that Is required, this will eventually bring others in.

Pierre, i would say that is a renewal...a revival is when mass amounts of sinners come to God and become christians
---mark on 4/29/07

In this context it could be a special set of meetings held by a church to bring back alive (spiritually) a congregation which seems to have fallen asleep. For example: A Revelation Seminar.

M.P. you are right. Revivals cannot be worked up in the flesh. Like the Azuza street revival anniversary. When it's done, it's done. God always does a new thing, and to balance, There is nothing new under the sun. Eccl 1:9 Rain dances will not bring on a revival. God's timing and decision, whether it be Africa, Iran, France or the U.K. - when God wants one.

Revial is for the church for them to be renewed and if we are on fire for the Lord people are going to get saved can you see 70 or more people full of the Holy Ghost in one building The unsaved don't need to walk out the door with out the spirit where there is one are more gather together in his he will be there

Revival services invite the Holy Spirit to get people on fire for God. They are sparked by recomittals to the Lord, altars calls to repent and returnings to the Lord: bowing, praying, crying, weeping while turning to God, total surrenderings up to God, forsaking of all bondages and sin, and new conversions, and baptisms of the Holy Spirit, annointings, and laying on of hands, and slayings in the Spirit, and speaking and singings in heavenly tongues, and letting God have complete control of every vessel.

When revival comes to this nation, almighty God's Spirit will fall upon us and no one but no one will be unaware something spiritually HUGE is happening...and are we ever in need of it!! A real national revival is rare and almost everyone knows about it not just a church or two.Let's pray big time and repent. Then watch God work! Hallelujah!. It's about time.....
---Elsie on 10/28/05

True revival is when God come down. When hearts are hungry, broken and tired of religion (man's image of God). When they just want Him and nothing more. When true revival comes all that you know or think you know falls apart. Then God can show himself as He truly is. However churches can have special services where they want to press in closer to the Lord, but the personal experience depends mainly on the personal hunger.

Revival is when God gets tired of being misrepresented and decides to show up Himself.

Listening to Focus On the Family broadcast, speaker gave a great definition of Revival. A Revial Service is a man made service...Revival is God made. It goes out side the church and influences the nation.

Shira,
Don't place too much importance on the word "revival". Revive = to bring to life. A "revival" meeting is just a time set aside or a series meetings to take time to re-evaluate one's spiritual life and renew their first love. To be challanged to draw closer to God.
"O Holy Ghost, revival comes from Thee; send a revival, start the work in me."

I know a LOT of churches hold or plan a big revival, but a lot of them are just man holding a revival. Theres one, exactly 1 mile down the road from me . They hold a revival about 3 times a year. To me a true revival is when the Holy Spirit is welcome and prayed for and the evidance of Him is overwhelming with signs and wonders. Example: When a lot of people come to Christ at the same time.

Revivals happen, they are not held. I have heard of meetings referred to as revivals but I think it is a misuse of the word. When a revival happens (and many have happened in various parts of the world) the Holy Spirit convicts people of their sin wherever they are and people are seen to fall to their knees and pray in the middle of the street and ask God's fogiveness; in the pub, down a mine, children in school etc. Isn't a real revival what we need right now?
