What Is Depression

I just feel so depressed all of the time. The depression just seems to be getting worse and worse. Being alone all of the time doesn't help much either. I am not alone by choice.

Emcee ... This is what I read from yuo

"Depression is a condition of the mind,it is contrary to hope:the state of being hopeless, deliberate act of will by which one turns away from salvation, considering it as impossible of attainment. It is called DESPAIR & one of the 2 deadly sins"

That statment includes "deliberate act of will by which one turns away from salvation"

That's why I thought you said depression was deliberate.

Alan of UK::Friend I never said it was deliberate. The Resultant effect of Despair is Depression.whether it was caused by chemical imbalance or triggered by electrical impulses or conditions which was the source for such abnormalities is not the question or the remedy, but an understanding of the malady. How one individual, deals with this condition is what we are discussing here. One does not Give up in the face of adversity b/c there is always a solution. This I believe to be the TRUTH.

Emcee,
For whatever may be "physical", well, medicine as when you have a headache. As for spiritual, Jeremiah 50:6: "My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace.", perhaps you could start being part of the solution in teaching, admonishing and nourishing a solid spiritual life in your brothers and sisters, instead of labeling, accusing and degrading them.

There are many theories about the cause of depression. One of the most commonly accepted theories suggests that two naturally occurring substances, serotonin and norepinephrine, are believed to affect core mood and pain symptoms of depression.

Depression is a serious medical condition with a variety of symptoms. Emotional symptoms can include sadness, loss of interest in things you once enjoyed, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, restlessness, and trouble concentrating or making decisions. Physical symptoms can include fatigue, vague aches and pains, headaches, and changes in weight or sleep patterns. For some, depression can include thoughts of death or suicide.
And yes, it can also be a spiritual matter.
---NVBarbara on 7/13/08

Emcee ... I can assure that depression is NOT deliberate.
---alan_of_UK on 7/13/08

What are you thinking? Your thought life has a very great bareing on your mental stability. Also, a healthy spirit is well connected to a healthy mind. God tells me this chemical imbalance thing is a rarity. Yet everyone seems to have it. I believe God.>>>I just flat-out asked Him one day, and that was His answer. Have a great day.

The best self help book I've come across for depression is Depression, The Way Out by Dr. Neal Nedley.

There is two types of depression. Flesh type and spiritual type. Believe this or not, the worse depression a person can experience is when God is dealing with them. Watch your thinking. You may balk at this but shrinks with all their degrees bless their hearts know so little. Pay attention: I know what I am talking about. I have no degrees. I do have a life time of misery to put behind me. Where would I be today if not for Jesus? In one word, DEAD.+++>>>>>Dead and in HELL.+
---catherine on 8/19/07

Depression is a state of mood where one feels sad, and lethargic most of the time. There are often chemical imbalances in the brain which can be at the root of a state of depression. There is also a connection to our thinking which can trigger a period of depression. Sometimes it is a combination of brain chemistry and thinking.

Pat, you obviously have good Godly wisdom.

You need to learn to like yourself and like being with yourself. If you don't like being alone with you, how do you expect anyone else to like being alone with you?? Depression is a state of the mind, the devil lies to us to get us into that place, rebuke the devil and he will flee, draw nigh to God and He WILL draw nigh to you! It works. I was depressed for years but I found the answer, His name is Jesus. I am not alone by choice either, but I have learned to enjoy being alone with myself.
---PAT on 3/13/07

Eloy, where are you? My heart sank when I read your story. When all props get kicked out and life busts your chops, staying heavenly minded can be motivation for recovery. Take small steps. Walk 30 min./day; sunshine on your face;good food. The sun will come up tomorrow, Eloy. Jump inside your bible and see yourself in the scriptures. Num6:24 "The Lord bless you and keep you, make His face shine upon you, be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace."

Depression is a disease which affects people of all ages. It's brought on by life, and the changes we go through living it. Each person reacts to it according to their ability to cope.
As a Christian, and provider of Mental Health Therapy for many years I offer; Dr's. diagnose and treat, ONLY God can heal.
Stay prayerful, see your physician, get into counseling, take medicine if necessary, and get out for short periods starting now, it may be very helpful to you.
I'm praying for you.

i come from a line of depressed and prideful people (including me!) and have struggled with it all my life. i wonder what would happen if i actually believed and did, say, the verses given in the Depression Bible quiz? What if i didn't just read them and think, "that's nice, now back to my problem", but believed and practised those Scriptures - looking TO Jesus, who is Salvation, instead of away from Him. Now THAT would turn your life around, and that's exciting.
---Marie on 8/12/06

i'm with you Nock. i battle depression daily. When the enemy totally destroys your life and strips everything away from you it's not an easy thing to have any joy. It's been 23 years since my life was destroyed and it hasn't been restored as of yet. i find solace in that each day that goes by i am one day closer to the end of this miserable life. Pleasure and joy to God.

Emcee, my friend ... thank you ... wes we do seem to have been talking about two different things, I would suggest that clinical depression, which is an illness like any other, and which you appear now to acknowledge is not a sin, is a fair bit more commonm than that type of despair which is a sin.
Peace.
---alan8869_of_UK on 11/2/05

Alan:: I stand by which I know to be true, we are both talking about TWO Different Things.Unfortunately, I hit so close to home which caused you distress my friend. In Catholicism we learn that Despair & Presumption are the 2 most Deadly sins & has no connection to a case of medical affliction. You read something into a case of mistaken identity.----JUDAS would have been saved if he only went back & said Lord I am sorry but he realised his mistake & gave up HOPE this is what I am, talking about DESPAIR.

Emcee ... I am sorry to have got angry, and not called you friend. In defence, I would say that htere are many people whom I have seen who have been afflicted by mental breakdown ... not caused by sin, but by outside influences, and as I stated earlier, it becomes a physical illness (the chemical imbalance of which Madison spoke) An illnes like any other.
Yet you seemed to deny that depression could be anything other than sin. Which would mean every illness was sin.
---alan8869_of_UK on 11/1/05

Emcee ... I invite you to read your own contribution of 10/30 "Depression is a condition of the mind,it is contrary to hope:the state of being hopeless;deliberate act of will by which one turns away from salvation"
You then called it despair and said it was one of the two deadly sins.
Will you now withdraw that?
---alan8869_of_UK on 11/1/05

Alan:: How am I to know your medical history& if I did I would be insensitive to make reference. What I alluded to is Despair which brings on depression Or else why would Jesus say "Come to me all who are laboured & burdened & I will refresh You"I called you FRIEND Your answer is not only accusatory But not worthy of comment under the circumstances. Madison is right on the point she made & so am I on the point I made,or why would Jesus use those words.
---Emcee on 11/1/05

What you describe sounds like clinical depression. This involves an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. The onset of depression can be caused by prolonged trauma, sudden trauma, life situations, a medical condition and/or genes. Ask God to help...then get a medical checkup, medication and spiritual help from a Christian whom you trust. God healed me over a 2yr period 30yrs ago;I haven't had a pill for depression since.

Send a Free Mother's Day Ecard

Emcee ...# 2 Do you then withdraw the statement that these people are sinning by having that medical condition, which as Madison has shown is a physical one (the imbalance of chemicals)
Unless you withdraw, it follows that you would judge all illnesses to be sinful.
And thank you, I received medical attention, and acknowledge that it was the God-given skills of the medical profession, as well as that tiny faith that remained through my period of despair, that has allowed me to be here today.
---alan8869_of_UK on 11/1/05

Emcee ...# 1 No, you had notso far actually used the word, but you had denied the validity of my own expererince, and of my observatins of others. Now you have heard Madison, do you accept that depression is NOT a "deliberate act of will by which one turns away from salvation"
THAT is the accusation with which you insulted all those who have been unfortunate to be affected by depression and the despair that sometimes follows it.
---alan8869_of_UK on 11/1/05

Alan Of Uk::Friend I am sorry if my words have offended you But I never call another a liar If I did I would use the word This is not my way of Or in life.I note you have a medical condition & you would be well advised to seek treatment.
Madison I retract my words & acknowledge thesuperior & true information.I am not in the field but have widely read & continue to do so.I stand corrected. The despair I spoke of was different.
---Emcee on 10/31/05

Depression is when a chemical in the brain called seratonin escapes the brain and flows throughout the body. I suffer from depression and am taking Prozak which keeps the seratonin in the brain where it belongs. It's our happy chemical. With depression you end up in a hole and can't get out. I'm a Christian and love Jesus more than anything ... thank God for doctors (healers) and medications to help us with mental illness. Alone? You aren't alone, Jesus Christ is with you. See a doctor soon.

Moderator - Have you had anyone lay hands on you and command the seratonin levels in the name of Jesus Christ to function properly? Have you fasted and prayed for God to heal you? Be encouraged God can heal you; I have seen it happen.

Just before you jump on me for my last posting ... I have of course sinned, and still do sin, but my mental illness was NOT caused by sin.
---alan8869_of_UK on 10/31/05

Emcee ... Yes this is a Christian forum, and you should listen in trust to what other Christians say about their experiences.
You appear to speak from theological theory, but sadly I speak from real experience as a Christian, travelling through stress and depression to almost total despair, where the chemical imbalance meant that I was not my real self.
Please do not insult me any further by calling me a liar, or saying that I sinned.
---alan8869_of_UK on 10/31/05

Emcee: Depression can be purely physical, or purely psychological, or purely spiritual. OR, it can be any combination of these three aspects. To tell someone who is depressed that ALL they need is Jesus, is dangerous. yes, they do need Jesus, but if they have the chemical imbalance, that won't get rid of the depression.

I am trained to work with mentally ill people, and have done that already. My clients are on medication, and receive psychotherapy as well.
---Madison on 10/31/05

Emcee: Don't say that I am talking about schizophrenia, because I am not discussing the mental illness that involves hallucinations, delusions and other psychosis. I am discussing depression, which is a condition caused by a chemical imbalance. Sometimes it occurs with mania, and is then referred to as bipolar disorder. Sometimes it is just depression.

John, thank you for posting! Because of my experience with depression I "knew" it was a spirit but now I have a Bible verse to prove it! And what's really cool is that Isaiah 61:3 says that praise will counter the spirit of heaviness! Praise God!
---DoryLory on 10/31/05

David, your post is interesting. I especially like the reading Scriptures outloud part. A couple of my friends were delivered from depression this way. I was set free from depression by confessing certain Bible verses every day. After 3 months the depression was gone. I believe we need to be aggressive in these matters (Hebrews 4:14).
---DoryLory on 10/31/05

Alan Of UK::I agree these are 2 sepatate things AS different as chalk & cheese. You & Madison are talking Medical infirmity I am talking DESPAIR = depression same name different Game. Once I discussed the depression topic in our cell-group which I summarized as follows. Draw a cartesian plane with both x and y axis. The y-axis points heaven-ward that signifies you must focus your love, faith and trust to God. The x-axis directs earth-ward that shows you must give your time, energy and love towards other people (your family, fellow-Christian, friends and the poor). I hope you get the idea in overcomming depression. Let the work of the Holy Spirit dwell in you richly. Godbless.

John: As a mental health professional, I have never read that the chemical imbalance is caused by the depression. I also believe that the chemical imbalance often needs the help of antidepressant medication. Furthermore, many depressions are caused by our perceptions of traumas that have occurred in our lives. These traumas may have triggered the chemical imbalances in the brain.

The prescribed treatment for depression is cognitive behavioral therapy and possibly medication.

Was listening to John Tesh on the radio one night, his program is Intelligence for Life. He was mentioning that the part of the brain that controls worry is the same part of the brain that is used when you read out loud. When you read out loud you are not able to keep the worry.

Nock, from someone that has gone through depression so severe that they locked me up and drugged me without consent 15 years ago...

They did not help matters out. However, some things that do help with depression... First drink lots of water (64 oz daily). Secondly, the demons don't like to stay around when you are praising Him! Would suggest Messainic music, that usually does the trick. The Boskeys are good, also check out Levite. Thirdly, read Scripture out loud, not silently.
---David7647 on 10/30/05

Yes, depression is an illness. It is not a choice or act of the will. It needs to be treated by the professionals, doctors, psychiatrists, and psychologists.

Get to your family doctor, get a physical and ask for a mental health referral.

Scripturally we see that depression is a spirit. It's called the spirit of heaviness. I believe chemical imbalances can come because of depression but I don't see any proof that the imbalance is there first.Put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Get praising and the depression and chemical imbalance will be gone.Hang around praisers, get all you can all week long, and give it away.

Moderator - I have to agree with you John. Which is why we need Christians around us in these times to pray and fast on our behalf.
---john on 10/30/05

As someone who has struggled with depression, I can tell you it is not fun. I would seek out christian counseling, start exercising and eating right. If that doesn't work you might talk to your doctor or a psychiatrist because you may need medicine. It is nothing to be ashamed of and know that you are not alone. I am praying that everything works out for you.

I to have had some depression. Since I had except Christ in my life it is better. I don't sit at home anymore I am trying to get in all the church functions that I can. I have to struggle with temptation at times but I remember I was just as alone then and I pray and feel better. It does pleasure the devil when we are down and I am not here to please him. I love the Lord and I am so much happier with him in my life. I will pray for you to fight this and except a christian life and it will get better.
---Janice on 10/30/05

dear Nock, I've known the many phases of depression, and please know you are not alone, and most of the time it's not due to any bad thing that we have done...but it's true that we live in a sinful world. So, just as some will bear illness, blindness, cancer or arthritis, many of us will have to bear depressions. But,as with any of those other conditions - prayer, faithfulness, good medical advice, medication, and Gods love will help you to overcome. Trust in the Lord!

Depression can also be caused by chemical imbalances of the body. You need to get yourself to a doctor for a complete - and I mean complete - physical. Tell him you feel like this and don't let him blow it off. Depression is very treatable!

Depression is a mental illness, usually caused by physical things, and caused that chemical imbalance she talks about.
