John 1:12 "To as many as called upon His name to them gave He the power to become the sons of God, even to those who beleive upon Him.
(Pretty Simple)

Mima, can I answer too: Did that prayer alone _suffice_ to save him? No... it's what those few words REPRESENTED IN HIS HEART (that he truly was trusting in Christ to save him; and God will always know), thus the faith he had in Jesus that actually saved him. As someone else at CN has said: God is not a "genie" that must _do whatever_ "just because we say the 'right words!' "
From a somewhat different aspect: "Did he need to _do_ anything else to be saved?" No!

Rebecca D; did this prayer," Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom" suffice for the thief on the cross?
---mima on 3/10/06

DoryLory: Thanks for sharing your 4 word prayer. Not everyone has the benefit of a preacher (or other Christian ) standing over them telling them what to say. I believe God honors sincere desire whether we speak it aloud or not. I'm sure that as soon as the prayer formed in your heart, He saw to it that your understanding of the Gospel soon followed. It's a great comfort to me that the Lord listens to what I "mean" more than to what I "say".

No. Jesus has to convict you of your sins, deal with your heart, and you have to realize that you are a sinner and then you can ask God in your life/heart. A simple prayer won't do. If God isn't dealing with one's heart, then you can utter all the words you want and pray all you want, it won't do a bit of good.

The Bible teaches that there is more to salvation than saying a simple little prayer. We should follow ALL the steps that the Bible teaches...Hearing the Gospel(Romans 10:17), Believing God's word(Mark 16:16), Repenting of our past sins(Luke 13:3), Confess Christ as savior(Romans 10:9-10 and Acts 8:37), Be Baptized for the remission of our sins (Acts 2:38, Acts 8:38), and remain faithful to Christ(Revelations 2:10)

God works in strange ways who are we to question his methods Read acts2:v38-41

Mima, that prayer, or any other (however simple or fancy) will only result in the person being saved if their heart was right. God knows the heart, we don't. God knows when we are talking to the ceiling and when we are talking to Him. It is doubtful that ALL those people were saved but it's possible. Those who repented of their sins (and then asked for them to be forgiven) would be, those who just recited the words for the sake of it wouldn't be.

Mima: About your comment, we can only say, MAYBE SOME of those people are saved now, but for most, I doubt it, because they would have to already know for sure who Jesus was, that they are lost in sin and only by grace through faith in the death and resurrection of Christ can they be saved! Did they turn from sin? Do they now obey God's Word? ONLY GOD KNOWS if the Spirit was truly working in their hearts; we can only guess from 'fruit' we might see in their lives.
---Daniel on 11/13/05

mima, no, they have not confessed their sin, nor asked the Lord to save them, nor invited him into their life. To be saved, you have to ask for it, like: "God save me!" "God forgive me!" "God take over my life!" "In Jesus i pray. Amen." You would be surprised at how many so-called christians have never asked to be saved, even many popular ministers and leaders have not asked to be saved, and therefore they're the blind leading the blind- both fall into the ditch.
---Eloy on 11/13/05

MIMA.::That prayer has the ingredients of sincerity & I would say is a prelude to salvation provided they stay in that state of Grace. Gods love is never ending its our genuine contrition that he wants. Its a love story. If you really love you will not offend.
---Emcee on 11/13/05

The pray can be super simple just as long as it contains the element of REPENTANCE. The 1st official church is established in Acts 2. All requirements for salvation are found in Acts 2:38. Repent, Baptism in Jesus name, and Possessing the Holy Ghost.

A team of three men working 8 days this past summer heard, after explainly how to be saved to them, over 2,300 people individually say the following prayer."LORD JESUS thank you for coming into my life, forgive me of my sins, thank you for saving my soul I accept you now amen". Is this salvation?? comments please --- mima 11/13/2005

Of course, after you are saved you will also want to get baptized, and to get your own KJV Bible and begin reading some of it every day, and also find a good New Testament Spirit-filled church to attend.
---Eloy on 11/13/05

Yes, salvation comes through praying to God the Father through Jesus. You must acknowledge your need to be saved from sin, which has separated you from God. Next admit or confess your sin to God. Then ask God to forgive you from all your wrongs, and wash you clean from all sin. Finally you ask the Lord to come into your heart and life and make you a born-again Christian, and fill you with his Holy Spirit, and to help you live your life for him. And you pray all this through Jesus, in the Name of Jesus.
---Eloy on 11/13/05

Just saying a prayer will not save anyone but saying a prayer in total sincerity admitting that you are a sinner and accepting that Jesus died to take away the guilt and punishment for those sins, and then asking God's forgiveness will result in you being a Christian.

My salvation prayer was 4 words -- "Lord, I want that!"

I was raised Catholic and never taught that God wants a personal relationship with us. Someone gave me a book in which the author wrote of how he talked to God like a friend AND God talked back to him. I was about 3/4ths through the book and decided I wanted a relationship with God too. Four simple words (not exactly "religious" words either) but God knew my heart and my life was changed forever. That was 22 years ago.

MIMA::What prayer are you saying? Depends on your sincerity & willingness to respond to Gods calling.

salvation is God's gift to mankind. It cost Him the life of His Son Jesus Christ.Jesus was crucified to death on a Cross. His death paid the price for our sins.He took our place. He is the Son of God.His Blood cleanses us from our sin.We are saved by sincerely telling God we are sorry for our sins;asking Him to forgive us;to wash us clean by The Blood of Jesus. Then ask Jesus to come into ones heart and accept Him as Lord and follow Him for the rest of ones life.
---James on 11/12/05

salvation comes from conviction by God. You cannot get saved by reciting a prayer or signing a piece of paper. Holy conviction is a definite drawing of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible says to REPENT which means to turn away from (stop) sinning. I dont care what todays denominations say, the Bible still says to REPENT!
---pat on 11/12/05

Don't get the wrong impression though! God will certainly 'hear' anyone who sincerely asks to know more about Him. And "after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you [are] sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory." (Ephesian 1:13-14).

yes and no to the question. It must be He that works in you to work and to will His good pleasure. If it was He that helped you say yes to Him or was it just a routine that you go through. It was not i that founmd o savior true but He yes He that found me as the psalm goes.
---Harold_John_Bouma on 11/12/05

Ask yourselves this: "Can a prayer to the WRONG God, save you?" People who believe in the wrong savior need to change their beliefs first. There are many who've made a commitment to Christ (saying words) for the wrong reasons; somtimes, only the person and God know that. We should never encourage someone to think they're saved if they don't even know what I'd call the minimal facts of salvation and what a commitment to God means!
---Daniel on 11/12/05

Anyone who's read all Scripture teaches about salvation must say 'No' to that, because we know that just 'saying words' without the right motives in your heart brought about by the work of the Spirit in your life is false faith; to be truly saved, you must have a repentant attitude, a true willingness to turn from sin because of your love for Christ having died for you and believing in all the Bible says about Him (1Cor15:3f., Eph2:8-10, John1:1-3;3:3ff.,etc).
---Daniel on 11/12/05

Yes. A prayer of repentance and acceptance of Christ's death is all that is required.

Dedicated, sincere prayer - long or short can be life changing.
---barbara67 on 11/12/05

Absolutely yes! God (and salvation) is just a little prayer away. God is not interested in good deeds, rituals or self-tortures. He is interested in our souls, He reads our hearts and minds. He is not complicated and He never makes things complicated. He loves us and welcomes us home any time. Read Psalm 51:)

You need to believe in Jesus to be saved. If a person says a prayer and does not believe, then it would seem the words are meaningless to that person. God knows what is in a person's heart. Romans 10:9,10
---Ulrika on 11/12/05

Romans 10 says that if we confess with the mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in the heart that God has raised Him from the dead, we are saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. God knows the heart. Leave the judging up to Him and work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
