Are Tongues For Today
Hello, I do believe that tongues are for today. The reason is that in Joel 2:28 God talked about pouring out His Spirit UPON all flesh. When we except Jesus as our Savior we have the Holy Spirit in us. Afterward we can recieve the baptism in the Holy Spirit w/ the evidence of speaking in tongues.

We are going to wear this subject out completely aren't we. When I got saved, Oh, I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit and it was coming to live inside me. I have never had an inkling to speak another language. If you read and study tongues, they are foreign languages God used to communicate with other christians of another tongue.

When necessary, tongues are for today. According to I Corinthians 12, the gift of tongues is one of the evidences of the Holy Spirit in someone's life.
"4There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. ...7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
One of my gifts is the gift of encouragement. Let's share what spiritual gifts God has given us for the "common good."

Rebecca, I am not out to put down anyone's belief on this issue. Mainly because those who believe that it is for today will not sway and neither shall I from my belief on this. It is not an essential topic so lets agree to disagree. I have no problem with those who believe in tongues. As far as scripture, I would quote 1 Corinthians 13:8-13, but then those on each side spin it to meet their doctrine, so what's the point?

Every person that spoke in tongues heard themselves spoke in tongues. They didn't understand what they were saying. 1 Cor 14:15-16. Speaking in tongues is a promise God had made, Joel 2:28-29. The disciples are to take no thought what they shall speak, for the spirit of the Father shall speak in them. Mt 10:19-20, Ml 13:11. The promise that God made was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost. If tongues wasn't for today then explain 1 Cor 14:1-6.

I dont believe that tongues are for today, but if they were, it would not be what I see happening in the church today.
I think it is self edification.

To Rickey, It was the unbelievers that needed saved. How you figure that they added to the church that day. I believe 99.9% of tongues are misused in American churches today. What say ya?

The spirt will move on a person sometime as he walks beside us But what is important is when he moves inside of us

There are 4 distinct "tongues". 1)Ministry where listeners are of another language but hear the speaker. 2)Specific prophesy. 3)Edification (person or church).& 4)Personal prayer to God. There are scriptures for each of these and yes they continue today. I do not, however, believe tongues are for proof as an outward sign of being saved. I see no scriptural evidence for that.

I was reading Acts 2:8 and I noticed that when they spoke in other tongues unbelievers understood them.

Tongues are for today because the baptism of the holy spirit will help us to do battle against the powers of darkness in the last days. we are encouraged to pray in the spirit(which satan cant understand)daily.
