I think that the pride of life asserts itself when we loose the biblical perspective of "our righteousness is as filthy rages"..."it is in Him that we live and move and have our being"..."our frame is dust"..."all we have gone astray"...In other words when we loose sight of the fact that we are the created and not the creator and that it is the creator that has the final say in any matter. Here is a poem I wrote:

"Spirit of original sin
Stalking through lives
and minds and souls of the living

Demanding to be satisfied
With blood and shame and regret
while demurely hiding its eyes

And in whispered voice
In tones of deference
proclaims "I am God"

Re: Pride of Life.
I have also had great diffiuclties in obtaining a decent definition. So far, I have come up with this: 1)Like the other lusts, it is a DRIVER for sin and not sin itself. 2)It is in and of the world (i.e. not of the Father). 3)There are many good examples of PRIDE in the bible. 4)It is not PRIDE.
Maybe if someone else looks at it the way I did, they can get it. The pride of life is a possesive term that can be re-translated LIFE'S PRIDE.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

The Pride of life comes after the other lusts. After you have been attacked, either learned to deffend or allready been conquered by them... Now you are ripe and vulnerable to a new attack. As Man grows older he becomes reminiscent of accomplishments in youth and notariaty of former things. Things like Degrees, Pedigrees, Conections in high places mean allot... He also becomes vulnerable to "feeling his oats", The "pride of life" will make him swell up like an old Bull Frog, then with the sudden surge of adrenelin, he may momentarily feel younge again... lasting just long enough to get the old toad in allot of trouble... Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Obsession with self, even if it's self-contempt, can be rooted in pride. As we humbly walk with God He frees us of thinking of ourselves - good or bad. Pride isn't just bragging. It's trusting in ourselves or our opinions instead of God. We may not talk like a braggard, but our level of obedience in things like hidden service of others, faithfulness in what we may think are "small" things and prayer - indicates whether we really think we know better than God. The small book "Humility" by Andrew Murray, a faithful servant greatly used of God in the 19th century, is a thorough Bible study on the subject - very eye opening - should be required reading of modern western Christian "ministers."

Sometimes pride of life can come in a disguise. Sometimes if the road has been rocky, hard and gruelling, and by the grace of God, we survive, we might say to ourselves, I am tough, I am a survivor, I can get through etc. We might fail to recognise the journey that God has taken us on. We might not see how God has walked with us. We might not see that we are reaping of what we had sown. We may not have recognised the sin and repented. We simply just are grateful that we have survived the journey and now we are survivors, tougher or wiser. Yet the journey may have been about Gods outworking in us. Cleansing, restoring, and clearing away the debris. Hellena

Actually I'm in danger of being prideful at this very moment. The percentage of obviously answered prayer has suddenly gotten very very high. And I'm tempted to believe that I'm doing something right rather than recognizing the fact that all prayer is initiated and answered by Almighty God.

I was thinking: I don't see how men and women of God can get into pride, when Satan is always standing by to remind you just how ROTTEN you are! Still we have to guard against it, because Satan will slso take the other avenue and try to get you into thinking how great you are. I am telling you. You have to guard against stuff, and all the time, too.

Eve bore the same nature that we do.She believed Gen 3:4, "Ye shall not surely die". She wanted the pride of being as gods knowing good and evil (v.5). Thats why so many religions push the immortal soul (which 2 words are not seen together in the bible). We are all subject to death. Dust to dust. It is only after judgement that Christ may accept us into his Father's kingdom and allow us to inherit everlasting life. That is a gift of God and not something we can earn or acquire on our own.
---Mark on 10/13/07

The Biblical definition of pride is, arrogance, haughtiness, boasting, to inflate with self conceit and I know that God hates pride. The pride of life I believe is putting your trust in and boasting about your material possessions, as well as taking credit for everything that you have ever achieved in your life, looking down on others and thinking that you are something special when you are not. There are a lot of christians that all you hear them talk about is themselves, stealing the glory from God.

Pride of life means:taking too much pride in material things. Some people work long hours and neglect themselves, church, family to accumulate things to brag about and show out with. They never once think about blessing others with some of that money and material goods. They are usually greedy, mean and covetous people.

I can give an example. My dad whom I love, is trying to buy a new SUV, not so bad. But it costs $67,000. payments will be around $800.00 a month. He boasts about it, and how much money he makes a month. He is a disabled Coal miner. I am not jealous because my Suv is paid off. the bible says that pride defiles a man. Mark 7:20-22. He has a prideful spirit. And he doesn't see it.

Moderator - Another example "I am not jealous because my Suv is paid off."

The pride of life is simply man taking credit for the blessings that God has given.
When we says look all that "I" have accomplished, do we not take the credit for the mind, the strength, and the insight that God given us. God is the giver of witty inventions. So all that we have and all that we are belong to God and in his infinite grace and mercy He used a vessel to delivere it to us. So can we the vessel be greater than the Author.

Jesus was tempted by Satan to prove he was the Son of God by casting himself down from the Temple. Satan was asking Jesus to use miraculous powers to prove his calling and relationship to the Father. It was a misuse of the miracles - Pride of Life [the other 2 temptations were lust of flesh, bread, and lust of eyes, glory]. The miracles were the Father's expression of compassion, not for Jesus to justify himself in the eyes of men... Do we seek God's blessing to prove to ourselves that God is on our side?

The Amplified Bible describes the pride of life as: assurance in one's own resources or in the stability of earthly things -- trusting in things that do not come from the Father but are from the world itself. (1 John 2:16)

I believe it refers to anything that tends to promote pride.

Always thinking about what is good for ourselves. Everything has to meet to our standards, even Christians think that. Pride in our denomination is one of the worst for it takes many on the wrong path. Pride that God has to meet our standards are we won't follow them. We make God what we want Him to be. Pride that it us with our free will that chooses Christ because we are not robots as Eloy puts it. That He has to wait for us cause we have the last say. Not Him. That is pride
