1Th 4:15-17 ... we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not precede them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, ... and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

If we don't die then we will be raptured up to appear before the judgement seat of Christ. (II Corinthians 5:10) (Matthew 16:28)(I Thessalonians 4:16)
---Rickey on 12/13/05

In I Thessalonians 5:23 and Hebrews 4:12 it lets us know that we are a three-part being. We are a spirit, have a soul, and live in a body. We were originally created to be just like the Godhead, a Trinity. The Trinity is Three, but are One. Our spirit is to rule our soul and body just like God is the Leader in the Trinity.[Genesis 1:26]
When this flesh dies it returns to the dust. Then our spirit and soul, if born-again, go to Paradise if we die before the rapture.{Luke 16}

Emcee: So you are not too good in English either.Let me help:
It is NOT: body + soul = 2
IT IS body + breath = 1 living soul!
nails + boards = box
seperate the nails and the boards and what happens to the box? It ceases to exist! P/

Pierre ::Right that is what I have maintained all along Body & soul=2, & the soul is immortal.
---Emcee on 12/13/05

Emcee: OK! Math is not your forte! DIRT or DUST was used by the Lord to shape part man. The BREATH OF LIFE, was added and whole made a LIVING SOUL! D+BofL=LS!
---Pierre on 12/13/05

Piere::In the school I attended 1+1=2
You are saying1+1=3
Body(dirt)&godsbreath--1+1=2 I dont think I am twisting your arithmetic is wrong.I do not know about If's & butt's.unless you came up with the equation that 1+1+1=3,which I dont see in geneses.Sorry
---Emcee on 12/12/05

EMCEE: I don't understand why you can't read GEN. 2:7 and stop "twisting" the truth! "The Lord formed man from the DUST of the ground and breathed into his nostrils THE BREATH OF LIFE, and man became a LIVING SOUL!"
D+BL+LS no if or but or and about it.

There is a great difference between the Soul and the Spirit!! In Hebrew 4: 12 we read about that twoedged sword... Luk.1: 46, 1 Thess. 5: 23 and more. Think about the Tabernacle. You see three parts, the outher part, the Holy and the Most Holy! So are we. The most inner part, is an image of our spirit. God spoke to Moses in the Most Holy!
From here our life is ruled! The soul is the mind, its instruments our sences. I can send to you my complete study.

The Word of Jesus Christ Himself stated that we only are asleep. Before He went to raise Lazarus from the dead He spoke to His disciples that Lazarus was only asleep. Then He said to them "he is dead." Our spirit/soul will never die, our flesh will but will be resurrected in its immortal state at the return of Christ for His Body.

Eloy; the dead are conscious only in a "parable"eccl.9.5
---1st_cliff on 12/11/05

Emcee;Perhaps you are uninformed, but we are made out of 95 elements of earth, about the same composition as 7 gallons of sea water! The amazing part of this is how God put it all together to "create" a human body, then animated it by breathing the "breath of life into it thus "creating" a living soul! Animals are also living souls .Check Gen.1.20 (in the Hebrew text)
---1st_cliff on 12/11/05

Jesus said the dead are conscious: "And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame." Luke 16:22,24.

1st Cliff ::Do not equate God with science this is about life of the soul & NOT about H2O chemistry magnetism or electricity. You may sound convincingly theatrical, but it is false.Your word "create" signifys that- using 2elements to PRODUCE not create A light bulb!!Create is to make something out of nothing- sorry for shortcircuiting your brain child.

Emcee: A human consists of a BODY and SOUL!
Really? Read it in GEN> DIRT+BRETH = SOUL!
That's the TRUTH! P.
---Pierre on 12/10/05

A human consists of a BODY & Soul.. At birth the soul incorporates the spirit of God made to his image & likeness. At Death the body returns to dust But the SOUL which you have been entrusted with as the guardian returns to almighty God for Judgement. If you have lived a good life, you again reunite with Christ. Once your soul is dead to sin it's dead & condemed to the fires of eternal damanation forever. You have made your choice. REMEMBER once you sin the HS leaves you automatically.
---Emcee on 12/10/05

In physics it's not unusual for 2 elements to create a 3rd IE. A light bulb add electricity produces a 3rd - "light" Break the bulb or dissconnect, where does the light go? (ceases to exist) The dust of the ground, the breath of life and Voilla a "living soul"
---1st_cliff on 12/10/05

What is the traditional belief on this matter? I think we will find that when the body dies, it goes to the earth from which it came; the spirit goes back to God who created it; and the soul is kept until the resurrection to be united with the spirit.

Folks: Please don't give me any credit. I was careful not to use a single word of my own. The words are God's.

2. Some scholar's look to the pre-septuagint(greek) OT for a deeper understanding of the relationship between the soul/body. What is often found is that the body is NOT seen is mutually exclusive from the soul. Example, Angels at Mamre who 'ate.' Jacob wrestles with a 'physical' angel(messanger)Many other examples are to be found. The point is, it is a over simplification to see the body and spirit as separate.

3.This is opinion, but i believe man comes here as a 'non-corporal spirit,'then has a body, and leaves as a greater amalgamation of both, the 'new creation' as spoke of in scripture.
---len_k on 12/10/05

1.To the greeks man was comprised of three states, as matter was comprised of three states. Example. Water, ice, and gas. Man was so comprised, physical, mental, and spiritual. (read Plato.) Even emotions, like love were so divided, eros(lust) philos(brotherly love) and agapos(love of divine)

What is difficult is that the NT was written in greek, and greco-concepts are difficult to seperate. 'Soul' is from a greek work meaning breath,(pneuma) In the latin the 'spirit'meant breath. Pauls discriptions of spirit/physical are mirrored in platonic philosophy, also, gnostic writings at the time also can give a better understanding as to the concepts in the first century.

Trichotomy is a term which signifies a division into 3 parts: Body, Soul, and Spirit.
"... May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thess. 5:23).
"For the word of God is living active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges thoughts and attitudes of the heart," (Heb. 4:12).

There is no official orthodox position on the number of parts of man.

To the truth seekers:
Eloy and Jerry's answer differ totally. Compare them carefully! One of them is telling the truth and one is not! Can you tell which is which. I hope so! P
---Pierre on 12/9/05

The soul is not the mind, and the soul is not the spirit, they are separate. Each person is made up of a body which is the building or flesh; a spirit which is the breath or aspiration; and a soul which is the life or anima. The soul can be living or dead. When one dies the spirit leaves the body and soul, and goes back to God. The body and soul remain behind on earth, until that time that the Lord will call for the dead to rise. (Mark 12:30; Acts 17:25; I Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 4:12).
