Tongues are a Spiritual gift and therefore,as all gifts, are to build the body of Christ. They will cease when He comes back. That is when the building is done. So, they are temporary, but they will still be used until then. Some beleive that the gifts ceased when the original 12 passed away but I find no Scriptural teaching of that.

Picking up snakes or drinking poison is not to be made a religious ritual or made into a "trial by ordeal" in order to prove one's spirituality. These are promises given to believers who encounter such dangers while fulfilling the Great Commission given us bu Jesus Himself (v. 15).

IT IS A SIN TO TEST GOD BY INITIATING UNNECESSARY DANGER OR TRAILS (Mat 4:5-7; 10:23; 24:16-19).

Rev Herb,
Mr16:18
*They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover

Tongues are not temporary, neither is shake handling or drinking deadly things*

Did the the hundreds of people in Acts who spoke in tongues and prophecied pick up snakes and drink poison and live?
---Matthew on 4/18/07

Herb, i dont think that bible verse i mathew, tells us to do that stuff, which is why i dont get those kinda churches that do...rather its says that if that does happen to us...God doesnt call us to be stupid
---mark on 4/18/07

Eloy - Thank you for that. I had only quoted where it says that tongues are temporary.
---Helen_5378 on 4/18/07

.helen5378, the verse 8 that you cited of I Corinthians needs to have verse 9 and 10 with it to be complete. This professes that Love is greater, and after Christ's Return there will be no more need for prophecies or tongues or the gift of knowledge, because there's no need to prophecy or interpret tongues for edifying, when the Edifier himself is come here in person. But the 2nd Coming has not happened yet, and all gifts are still in operation until that time that the Lord himself descends from heaven.

It's not temporary. Mark 16:17 (King James Version) 17And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

You forgot the other verse that goes with that:

Mr16:18
They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover

Tongues are not temporary, neither is shake handling or drinking deadly things

If you are truly saved you need to get together with the Person of the Holy Spirit. >>>There will be but one language in Heaven. Also prophecy must fail. All of these scriptures are talking about when we all get to heaven. Then the church will be in a state of perfection complete both in knowledge and holiness.>>>> We will see God face to face.

Tongues will cease is in 1 Corinthians 13:8. "Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away."
---Helen_5378 on 4/16/07

tongues means languages on earth. on day of Pent. they understood in their own tongue what was said in a diff language.

.mike, the voice of the Holy Spirit is not endorphins. It is God's gift given for edification, and he gives this gift to us whom ask him, glossalalia is God speaking to man. "For with stammering of lip and with another tongue will he speak to this people. For the speaking in a tongue, not the man speaks, but of God: for no one follows, but the Spirit speaks mysteries." Isaiah 28:11,12; I Corinthians 14:2.

And for someone who doesn't believe in it, you talk about it constantly, incessantly, with copious amounts of detail. You thrive on reason and Thomas J. and accusing the brethern. You basically hate all Christians, I believe. Hope the mormons enjoy you.

I do not believe it is written in the word of God. This is most interesting.>>>The destruction of Jerusalem, which was about forty years after Christ's death, is here called that great and notable day of the Lord. The desolation itself was such as was never brought uopn any place or nation, either before or since. It was the day of the Lord, for it was the day of His vengeance upon that people for crucifying CHRIST. [People had better stop the nonsence, don't you think]?
---catherine on 4/15/07

I was raised around pentacostals. glosserlia is the masive relaase of endorphines, phermones into the bloodstream. This can be measured. It is much like a runners high.
---MikeM on 4/15/07

Part three>>> Here goes. Weep and learn. Tongues, as the Corinthians used them, were rather a token of Judgment from God than mercy to any people. Tongues were rather a sign to unbelievers than to belivers. The credit and reputation of their assemblies required them to prefer prophesying. I want to thank my Lord and my Saviour for all your help. So thank you, Jesus Christ.

No it is not temporary. Read Romans.

Tongues will not cease. Cor is talking about you can have all of this, but if you don't have love they will cease. They won't be anygood.
---Hope on 1/12/06

1 Corinthians 13:8 - "Love never fails. But if there are prophecies, they will be caused to cease; if tongues, they shall cease; if knowledge, it will be caused to cease." (The Amplified Bible says: knowledge will lose its value and be superseded by truth.)

In contrast to love, these things are temporal, not eternal. V10 says when they will end - "But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is incomplete and imperfect will be done away with."
---DoryLory on 12/11/05

Paul says that tongues shall pass away, as will prophecy. When this will happen is not specified, it isn't what he was interestd in.

Shira_5965: I share your belief. Private interpretation (2 Pt. 1:20-21) is always contrary to the revelation (teaching) of the Holy Spirit. This thing about speaking in tongues has caused much confusion in the Church. (1 Cor. 14:33)
---Leon on 12/11/05

Isn't it interesting how we interpret the Word of God. Mark 16:17 speaks of new tongues, but I always believed that to be we talk differently after we are saved. Before we are saved, we talk ugly, tell dirty jokes, curse, but after we are saved, we speak differently.
---shira_5965 on 12/10/05

I know this was stated in the other blog, but it simply isn't true. A temporary gift of tongues is not in the Bible anywhere.
