John,

Judas may have been the "official" bag-man... but, in the end... didn't Judas kinda leave Jesus actually holdin' the bag?

(I know--but it was just too hard to pass up. I'm sure Frances will tell ya 'it was the devil made him do it.')
---BruceB on 4/22/09

Should Jesus have become in dire need of money he could have always went fishing!
---mima on 4/21/09

If Judas held the bag that means he was the man in charge of the money. Obviously there must have been money if there was a person holding the bag.
---john on 4/20/09

Doug, why do you ask this question?

just curious
---NurseRobert on 4/20/09

Eloy,

Fair enough: katoikeo: to dwell, settle or as you say, "set house" either way, this was a temporary "settling" either he was taken in or he rented a place but the fact remains that it was temporary for He himself said he had no permanent dwelling and by times no dwelling at all.

Luke 9:58, "And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head."
---Bruce5656 on 4/20/09

.bruce, I am making an exception this one time to reply to you: Jesus left his house in order to go out to various destinations where the people were in order to minister the gospel to them. lit.Gk: "And leaving behind that Nazareth, he came along, set house in Capernaum, that beside the sea in borders of Zebulon and Naphthalim." Matthew 4:13.
---Eloy on 4/20/09

Thank you Ceaser, for explaining. I just think it's kind of funny to be putting the rent money in a fish mouth.
---sue on 4/20/09

Jesus is God and his entire ministry would have been in peril if he depended on money as we. It would have been another excuse for those claiming they do not have money and therefore are incapable of relating or following Christ.
He was born a homeless Palestinian Jew in transit and appears to have been raised in a home found by his father shortly after birth.
He does not appear to have had a permanent residence after reaching 30, and was on the move until the age of 33 when he was murdered.
---larry on 4/19/09

Sue-

Jesus "played those silly games" because He needed to prove a point. What better way to get to the point than to deal with an area someone knows? This is also why Jesus told his parables. People understand things when it's about something they're familiar with.
---Cesar on 4/19/09

Doug.F:, This whole universe and its contents belomg to Jesus why else would He command 10% be given back to Him as a tithe. !!
---MIC on 4/19/09

Hag 2:8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

Pretty much sums it up: eh?
---BruceB on 4/19/09

Eloy,
"Yes, he also had a house,"

Interesting. The Bible says:Luke 9:58, "And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head."

How does that fit together with your statement?

Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus had a house? Are you referring to "His Father's house ie. the temple?"
---Bruce5656 on 4/18/09

Yes, he also had a house, he wore clothes, and he ate food.
---Eloy on 4/18/09

You don't need money to travel around. I've known many people who traveled the country without money.
They didn't even have any mode of transpertation!
---sue on 4/18/09

Anne said: Matt.17:27- Jesus told Peter to go fishing & the first fish he pulled out, look in its mouth, and there would be enough money to pay his taxes & Jesus' as well. Seems to me He didn't carry money with Him.
---Ann5758 on 1/5/06
WHY would Jesus play these silly games with fish and money?? It's stuff like this that makes me wonder.
Anne, nothing at all against you, just wondering about the Bible.
---sue on 4/17/09

In Luke chapter 8 we read the following:1After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out, 3Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's household, Susanna, and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

He didn't need any money. He is God. He payed His taxes through a FISH. Michael, well said. I needed that thank you. Joyce Meyer also preached along those lines this morning.. And she is not a false teacher. According to some, God does not have any trues out here. Satan has them all. BUNK.+

God uses his chosen people to glorify him in different ways. for example some of us will experience wealth , while others of us will suffer & or struggle, all according to his purpose for our lives!

#1(Acts 4: 32-35) And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had all things common.
And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus:

#2 and great grace was upon them all.
Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
---Mr._Graham on 9/23/07

Why isnt the church effective today..because we waste out times on these small knats of an argument while the enemy goes around life a roaring lion. If Jesus had money who is to say that he had a lot or a little..the most important thing we know about Jesus is that he cared for people..and therefore no matter what amount he had he most likely used it to minister to hurting folks. Little or alot we are expected to use our resources for the good of others.
---Jamel on 8/2/07

And to conclude that Jesus was wealthy just because he had a treasurer is mere speculation at best, an example of poor exegisis and reading into the scriptures things to support one's own preconcieved ideas...its kind of laughable if not depserate. Why spend so much time wondering if Jeus was rich..how bout we just follow in his foot steps regardless of how much money we have.

"Just curious. Does anyone on this blog wonder about what became of the GOLD , frankincense & myrrh the Magi presented to Jesus? (Matt. 2:11)"

Leon, I believe the frankincense and myrrh were used in His burial. The gold, knowing Jesus, was given to the poor. Thats just my guess.
---Kay on 1/4/07

It states that he became poor so that we can have life. When he arrives to set up the Messsianic Kingdom he will come in great power, glory and with thousands upon thousands of Saint's. Come quickly Lord Jesus

I believe Jesus was poor.
Matthew 8:20 says "And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head." Its clear that Jesus was referring to not having His own place to live (fox holes & bird nests).

I believe Jesus often stayed in the homes of His followers and received financial help from some of them.

How could He go all the places He did or do all the things He did without money.
---Leslie on 1/3/07

oh how the prosperity gospel can only be taught in the u.s. (where the money is) I guess Christians in Iran don't deserve to be financially well off. prosperity gospel-what a bunch of hooey
---r.w. on 11/4/06

Jesus had enough to support Himself, His family, and something like 70 more people (including the disciples)...even though Judas was stealing out of His money bag! The Scripture reference regarding having no place to lay His head had nothing to do with poverty. It had to do with not having a place to put His mind. So He laid down His life, was obedient to death, died and rose again so that He could have a place to put it. "But we HAVE the mind of Christ."

Doug, what has made you so bitter and sarcastic about nearly everything? I agree that there's a lot of nonsense going on on 'Christian' television today, but to just make a blanket statement like "100% of them" are false is not really a fair assesment. Judging from the comments you've made on this and several other blogs, in your opinion, there should be no churches, and we should all meet in small groups with dirt poor MEN leading them. What's up?
---Molly on 1/6/06

I don't think that there is anything wrong with having money as long as it isn't your master. The bible says we can't serve two masters because we will love the one and hate the other. If we are using the things that God gives us to glorify him than there is nothing wrong with having money.
---jodha on 1/6/06

No nothing wrong with having money. 1 Tim 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
---Doug_Fowler on 1/6/06

I may be wrong here, but wasn't Jesus a carpenter before His ministry began? Wouldn't he have had money from that?

Where does scripture say it's wrong to be wealthy? I'm not big into prosperity teaching, but God does want His people to prosper, and if you honor Him, He will give you what you need, and more. Nothing wrong with having money.

Let me tell you something money is fine to provide for family and for needs. Like for food, utilities, clothing, roof over your head stuff like that. Did Jesus Go asking for money for his ministeries huh. like these so called tv evangelists, preachers, and Joyce Meyers and such. Well 100% of those so tv preachers are false teachers you know why called. Because they USE GOD'S WORD FOR FINANCIAL GAIN.

Actually, Cliff is right. Jesus was not without funds. As far as "not having a place to lay my head" - doesn't necessarily refer to not having finances - but can refer to having nowhere safe to lay his head - by that time there were lots of folks gunning for him. I'm not for the "prosperity" teaching, but I also don't want to throw out the baby with the bathwater... so to speak.

1 Timothy 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

Pt1
It could be that Jesus wandered the earth with no dwelling place of His own however Matthew 4:13 says He moved from Nazareth to live in Capernaum. Usually when someone lives somewhere that means they have an actual place to live. When the Bible says Jesus had no place to lay His head, I don't think it's necessarily referring to His lifestyle but rather His Headship. In other words, He was not received by His own creation. He was an outcast in the world.

Pt2
As far as Jesus having money, we know from Bruce's response that He had a treasurer so there had to be money that needed accounting for. We know from Luke 8:3 that people supported His ministry, and we also know that He had at least 12 men AND their families under His care. They left everything to follow Him, someone had to be providing for them.
---DoryLory on 1/5/06

He sure knew where to find it!

Matthew 17:27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

1st_cliff It wasn't at his birth that the Magi gave him his gifts. But probably still under two years of age as Herod was calculating because of what the Magi told him.
---jamea7657 on 1/5/06

I'm sure He had what was needed. When He had to pay taxes He got the money out of a fishes mouth. LOL. I wish I could do that. I don't believe he lived in poverty and want. That would be a curse.

Here's one scripture that pertains to this.

Matthew 8:20 Jesus saith unto him , The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; BUT THE SON OF MAN HATH NOT WHERE TO LAY HIS HEAD.
kind of humbling huh when we sit in our warm houses and complain about what we don't have huh. HE made us. Where do lay your head at night?

Judas was in charge of the money. John 12:6, "This (Judas) said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein."John 13:29, "For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor."
