Deu 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Ye are God's building.

Going back a little! Jesus came and died and was resurrected sent the Person of the Holy Spirit back, so that when a person is saved they now know who the true God is. The person of the Holy Spirit comforts and a whole lot more for the believer. Isn't it wonderful that you can only know the true God through the new birth...This is why Jesus came. When you are saved, now you know>>>the true living God.

Donna66,
When I consider:
John 1:10: "He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not."
1 Corinthians 10:4: "And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ."
Matthew 23:34: "Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify, and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:"

"Hosanna, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, as much a "new creature" as any a today's saint, Sister.

Nana -- In the OT the HS instructed and guided people, even filling them, on occasion to perform certain tasks i.e. building the tabernacle or Elisabeth speaking a word of Divine knowledge about the Savior to be born.

That dies not mean these people were spiritually "alive" as Christians are to Christ. Christians aren't merely forgiven, the are made anew.

IICor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature....

II Cor 5:14-15 For the love of Christ constraineth us...we thus judge that if one died for all, then were all dead:

I John 5:11. He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

I agree with Donna,
"Before the Cross, men were "spiritually" dead. The Holy Spirit, as a SPIRIT, could ACT UPON them, not DWELL WITHIN them"
Holy Spirit testifies of Jesus and they in turn will bear witness of Him through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit would also endwelled the new believer after been brought to life. The Holy Spirit ministry changed in the New Testament compared to the Old where the norm was to be upon the people. The Word of God through all believers would now go out with power and with the Spirit to hundreds and some times to thousands at one time. Another reason was to comfort the disciples because none of them ask Him where He was going for sorrow had filled their hearts.

Luke 1:15: "For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink, and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb."

Luke 2:25: "And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 26: And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ."

It cannot be said that this particular Simeon was "spiritually dead". The Polly the parrot syndrome, will it ever end?

while Jesus was on the earth He represented the Father to the people. and invited the people to know the Father. but no one could get saved until Jesus had gone to the cross representing us there, taking the curse and all our sins upon Himself. died and was buried.
- then after His resurrection He ascended to heaven and started the next phase of His ministry as the Intercessor, and High Priest, Advocate for all who would believe in Him. He represents us before the Father.
- it wasn't until then that the Holy Spirit was sent to begin His part of that ministry in the earth.. dwelling within, & through those who are born again representing the Lord Jesus and the Father to perspective converts and to those who are born again.

The way I see it is this:

Before the Cross, men were "spiritually" dead. The Holy Spirit, as a SPIRIT, could ACT UPON them, not DWELL WITHIN them.

The only way mens sins could be covered (not
eliminated) was by an elaborate system of rituals and blood sacrifices.

Jesus, as the PERFECT sacrifice, provided forgiveness for sin,... and also enabled His righteousness to be IMPUTED to flawed mankind.

Thereafter, by being "born again"
(being brought to life spiritually) men could be reconciled to God on the basis of Christ's righteousness, rather than their own.

This opened the way for the Holy Spirit to be "with" them as Jesus was, and also reside within them.

"why could the comforter not come until Jesus went away?"

Jesus laying down His life as a ransom for man, was confirmed as accepted of the Father by His ascension. Until then there was no place for Christ in man, or condition within man for Christ. Jesus ascended to prepare that place and condition. When He ascended to the right hand of the Father, man was imputed the righteousness of God in Him, and thereby made acceptable in His beloved to receive the impartation of His Holy Spirit. Hence, Jesus did not leave man comfortless, He returned in the Spirit of the Father and the Son to establish His abode within us.

I'm not sure but I do know that he is the third part of the trinnity and the high priest. The one that Abraham paid ties to and the one who officiated the saccrafice and carried the blood,God's blood,to the alter. The saccrafice of Jesus to God the farther that Jesus gave himself.

The reason why the comforter could not be there (in my opion) is because Jesus was the Holy Spirit "He had it in Him", and when He went back to his Father He needed to send the Holy Spirit back to us to help us to deal with every day life and to have faith in him, since he was no longer physically with us. because people go on sight (even now a day we do. being able to see things with our own eyes).
---Lisa on 3/21/08

Because Jesus was not born again yet. He could not come until Jesus created the "new life" for us? (I may be totaly wrong)
---Fred_S. on 8/8/07

greetings."why could the comforter not come'.Jesus's human life was not term.Jesus was not yet resurected .Mainly,Jesus was not yet at the right hand of his Father. Now that the spirit of truth is present the soul searcher has found that there is no greater truth leader than the comforter while jesus is personally absent from our world. The spirit of truth takes the place of Jesus and for all high and low who have monopolized religion and led astray or made others submit to them ,it is no more.

Jesus came to the earth to set right what had gone wrong. the work of the cross accomplished that. with that work finished, the rei(g)ns are handed to those who believe.

Jesus in heaven represents us to the Father... when we pray in Jesus Name.. while the Holy Spirit represents the Lord Jesus to us through His word, on the earth.. that by the Holy Spirit all the ministry things that Jesus did on the earth can be continued and accomplished through those who are obedient to His word and Spirit.

** 'Person' does not describe how awesome the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are.
**

"Person" here has a technical theological meaning, and is used as the equivalent of the Greek term HYPOSTASIS.
---Jack on 1/9/07

Jesus was on the cross in agony (he did this for us) and then at the last hour he cried, "Father Father why hast thou forsaken me?" And the Son of Man released his spirit. And those whosoever shall believeth in Him shall have everlasting life. "Thou shall not come unto the Father except through me." (Jesus)

Absolutely, Helen.
God in three 'persons'. 'Person' does not describe how awesome the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are.

Jesus is not the same 'person' as the Holy Spirit.
---Joel on 1/9/07

Jesus is under NO NECESSITY. Being God, He is totally free, and doesn't NEED to do anything.
---Jack on 1/9/07

Because sin had to be abolished on the Cross by the Lord Jesus first. Then the Holy Spirit could reside in believers. In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit could only come upon believers and annoint them for service, then He would leave. That was because the sin debt had not yet been paid on the Cross.
---Helen_5378 on 1/9/07

Lisa - Jesus was never the Holy Spirit nor will He ever be. The three persons of the Trinity are separate persons, all together as one God.

I think it would be a grave mistake not to understand GOD's words. If we do not question these things we could easily be decieved and taken off the path of GOD believing at the same time we are following Him but following Satan instead.
---Kimberly on 1/8/07

The scriptures states that Satan is so wise that he curls his tail and takes down 1/3 of the stars in heaven. This does not mean the constillations. This refers to the scholars and scientists of religion. If this is the case then we MUST question and be made to understand GOD's words so we will not be pulled off his straight path. We must learn then what is this teaching that satan has brought that can take us away from our father. It would have to be about GOD and who Jesus is.
---Kimberly on 1/8/07

It is a mistake to try to understand this, or the Trinity, or the resurrection, or the ascension, or our soul, spirit, and how and when we go to heaven, in a mathematical, biological or chemical way. Thes matters do not work in a scientific way.

Hey Lisa, Just a reminder, Jesus was concieved thru Mary (Jesus mom) by the Holy Spirit. When Jesus was Bapitized, Heaven open, and the Holy Spirit assended upon him. So how could Jesus (himself) be the Holy Spirit....Hmmmm...?
