Does Acts 1:5 mean there are two different ways or kinds of being baptized? How can one tell if they have been baptized in the Holy Ghost?

If you speak in tongues you are baptized in the Holy Spirit. You also receive the power to be witness for Christ.

Thanks for mentioning that.

Often when people read "baptism" in Rom 6 they picture water baptism. "Baptism" is from the Greek baptizo or baptisma. The litteral meaning is to be immersed or placed within.

If we read Rom 6 to be water baptism, we have no choice but to believe in baptisimal regeneration. Simply substitute the word "baptized" with its litteral meaning "placed within" and the true meaning becomes clear. cf I Cor 12:13

Bruce is right. I'm sure he will be questioned about the Bible saying there is one baptism. There is just one. It shows itself 3 ways. Like God. There is just one and He shows Himself 3 ways.

Hey Brucel ... I learned something new today! I will forever read Romans 6 in a new light ... thanks!

There are three baptisms of concern the believer today. (Remember baptism simply means to place fully within)
1. Baptism in the Body - by the Holy Spirit Romans 6:1-11 [this is NOT about water baptism but being baptized (placed within) into Jesus' body] by the Holy Spirit I Cor 12:13

2. Baptism in the Holy Spirit - by Jesus Matt 3:11 (not to be confused with having the Holy Spirit come to reside in you at conversion.) Acts 2:4. Jesus described this as being baptized in the Holy Spirit Acts 1:5

3. Baptism in water - by a man Matt 18:19

How did they know if they had been baptized in the Holy Spirit? The closest you will find to a definative answer is in Acts 10:44-46, "While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God."

Holy Spirit filled is Spirit led. Beginning with Acts 2 we can see evidence of the changes brought about in the believers after their baptism in the Holy Spirit. Not only did they speak in unknown tongues but they spoke with holy boldness; they preached Jesus Christ; they healed the sick; and they were joyful in suffering for Jesus Christ.
There love for God and each other began to reach perfection by the Holy Spirit.

Water baptism is the answer of a clean conscience to God. It signifies the public acknowledgement and obediance of faith in the death and ressurrection of Jesus. The Baptism of the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in tongues is the spiritual baptism. Those who have been baptised by the Holy Ghost truly know. Ask, and it shall be given.

We are baptized by the Holy Spirit upon our acceptance of Christ as Savior. There is no way to tell, just believe that it occurred at salvation.
