Jessica, the Bible states that no one counsels God. It is evident that no one has counseled you either.
If you read the Bible you would discover these things. Try it and see

The 24 elders are te counselr of God. When God wants to do something he consorts them and they counsel amungst themselves. Thier only assignment in Heave is to bow down and worship God all the time. They are not identified or no one knows who they are except God. They are his cabinet members (just how Pres. Obama has cabinet members - God has his counsel). Amen

The 24 Elders are the leaders of the unfallen worlds. I know this because as Jesus decends into heaven after the resurrection in Revelation 4 & 5, the 24 elders greet him. In Psalms, the Bible calls them sons of God who rejoice when the world was being made. Adam should have been numbered in this number.

i think you have to think past present and future to work the elders out.
past. the thrones are probable the 24 books that were in the arc befor it fell into the wronge hands. one of which was of great interrest to Jesus
present. at the time jesus probable had 24 others helping him. my guess is they were well versed in scripture and probably parents of sons slaughtered in the search for Jesus in the first place.
future. 24 crowns of some sort are going to come together

I believe it is a leader from one of the twelve tribes (12 sons of Jacob) plus the 12 apostles.

Shari, that would make 156 not 24! but I know what you mean.

I agree with Phil. It's all speculative. Some people believe it the captives in Ephesians 4:8-12.

The 24 are: Jacob (named, Israel) had 12 sons, generating the 12 tribes (Genesis 49); and Jesus (named, Immanuel) also had 12 disciples, regenerated to propagate the christian gospel (Matthew 10; Acts 1:21-26). And the number of God in reference to heaven is 1000: therefore 12 from the O.T. by 12 from the N.T.= 144; and 144 by 1000= 144,000 (Revelation 14:1-5).

The Bible doesn't reveal to us who the 24 elders are - however, one guess would be the 12 Apostles and 12 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel.
---Shari on 2/2/06

Most of the answers are speculative but about the best I have found is that is a doubling of ancient Israel and and Gentiles. as there were 12 tribes of Israel and doubling that would give 24 tribes. It could be combination of the numbers of apostles and the gates in Jerusalem. 24 elder is used numerous times between Rev. ch 4 & 19.

the 12 disciples of the New Testament and 12 from the old testament

This is an excellent question. Also this question exposes my ignorance about the 24 elders. I truly have no idea to the answer to this question.
