AOG Speak In Tongues

I have always wondered why people of the AOG Church would speak in tongues. I was brought up in the Covanant Church and was taught that it was wrong to speak in tongues and that not many can. At the AOG, many were "speaking in tongues". Please give me information that back this issue up.

I agree with pop and Cindi, tongues in the Bible does refer to known languages, not babbling gibberish. I would stick to what your church taught you, that it's not a very common thing for the Biblical gift of tongues to be observed. Those who roll around babbling are very confused.
---Todd1 on 5/22/08

pop...
You are correct in what you say about tongues with one exception. They were not in the "upper room" when they received. That is where they slept and it would never accomodate even the 120, let alone the thousands that came when it was 'noised about'. They were in the Temple, at the time (hour) of prayer. Sitting in the posture of prayer and the tongues of fire was their sign that they were going to receive.
---Cindi on 5/22/08

It is quite Unfortunate that anyone would ever even be brave enough or consider or even suggest taking away anything out of the Word of God...And,God doesn't take this lightly...In fact, He sends a very stern warning and message in Revelation22:18-19 and also in Deuteronomy4:2 and Proverbs30:6 to every false teacher and preacher...concerning adding and taking away anything out of His Word...Adding anything to the Word of God is considered forgery...Taking anything away is considered thievery...
---Elisabeth on 5/21/08

Tongues in Bible means a known language..not unintelligible language..God is a God of order, not of confusion. In the upper room, when the coven tongues of fire were upon the 120, they spoke of known language..not mumbo jumbo..Remember, God is a God of order...

Speaking in tongues have not ceased. God is still pouring out his spirit upon those who want to be filled with the Holy Ghost. If a person wants to speak in tongues they must first desire to speak in tongues. If they do not understand it or believe it be false, God won't pour out his spirit upon you, baptizing you with the Holy Ghost. But none of the gifts from God have ceased. They never have and never will, for God never changes.
---Rebecca_D on 3/1/08

To "dyed in the wool" Rev.Herb. Please consider this verse." For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance." What you think this verse means? Could it possibly mean that God does not change his mind? That God is not an Indian giver? If so you're wrong about tongues! To eliminate the Book of Acts would be to keep us from knowledge of how the early church operated. Remember the early church turned the know world upside down. --- Glad to see you posting again.

Pastor Herb, you get my vote. I looked at what your other posts were and they also get my vote. I also think that the One World Religion will be an apostate one under Rome, but at Jerusalem.

If you are taught that it is wrong to speak in tongues, than you are in a false church. The amount of Biblical illiteracy that exists in this country today is astounding. The US is the most open and information-blessed land on the face of the Earth. Billions of Bibles in circulation and yet noone can figure out what sound doctrine is. Amazing. Here's the apostle giving us instructions on the use of the gifts AFTER the day of Pentecost and yet you've got people denying he's doing so.

Tongues ceased after the apostles. Tongues were used for a sign to the unbelieving Jew. It was a temporary gift. Tongues reapeared in 1902. Tongues will be used to bring all religions together. If you took the book of Acts from the bible, you would eliminater many false religions.

We speak in tongues because we accepted the Promise of the God that Jesus prayed Him to send, a comforter/Holy Ghost to His people. In Acts it shows everyone who received the Comforter, the Holy Ghost spoke in tongues. That was the pattern God established to receive Holy Ghost and Jesus never came back and changed it. Those who speak in tongues , one half Billion people/Pentecostals,are second largest denomination in world. Also in many other denominations some speak in tongues.
---Darlene_1 on 2/28/08

Lee..the reason Paul prefers prophecy is because it is God speaking to the church body, the the entire body is edified. Speaking in tongues is the Holy Spirit, which is God, communicating to God. No man understands tongues, unless it is interpreted, which Paul says to pray for. Sometimes prophecy is given in tongues, in which case either the giver, or another person, should interpret.

1 Corinthians 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, & forbid not to speak with tongues.

If we forbid the speaking in tongues by Christians, then are we not in compliance with the Scripture?

Endorphines put one into a state of euphoria, but those that speak in tongues tell me they do not need to be in a state of euphoria to pray in tongues.

*Rebecca-*If a person has this gift, they cannot teach others on how to speak in tongues. If God doesn't give you this gift, then don't even try to speak in tongues.*

Very, very true. I hope those in the "must speak in tongues to be saved churches" will heed to what you said. There is a big difference between accepting God's call to the faith and being baptised in the Holy Spirit. When we merge the two, it becomes a false doctrine.
---Matthew on 5/24/07

If God isn't speaking through a person while speaking in tongues, they shouldn't speak in tongues at all. A person can't practice this. It has to come from God. There are many whom don't speak in tongues because they desire not to. If a person has this gift, they cannot teach others on how to speak in tongues. If God doesn't give you this gift, then don't even try to speak in tongues.

It is never wrong to speak with other tongues. You were taught incorrectly. Speaking in tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit. It is for today. But not everyone speaks in tongue because they do not know they can. I speak in tongue and love doing so, almost daily.
---Robyn on 5/23/07

You were taught wrong. In the book of Acts the Holy Ghost fell on men and women and they begain to speak in tongues. People today at my church speak in tongues. We are non-demonational. My Pastor speaks in tongues plus he has the gift of interupt tongues. Speaking in tongues is the evidence of the Holy Ghost, it is a gift that God gives out to those who truely desire to have this gift. Now there are wolves (evil) speaking in tongues and it is not of God. So watch out on that.

6.
But in our private prayer life, the instruction is, "I would that ye all spake with tongues;" and, "I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:"

I listed some of the benefits of speaking in tongues in another forum a few months ago.
---Jeffrey on 3/5/06

5.
V.12-27 talk about how the body of Christ works together and needs every part (something we should remember in these forums!). Then v.28 says, "And God hath set some in the church" (or in the assembly).

So v.28-31 is talking about in our meetings. And in that context it says, "do all speak with tongues?" Well, of course not! If it was a congregation of 100, you'd never get home if they all spoke in tongues and interpreted!
---Jeffrey on 3/5/06

4.
V.11 says they are divided "to every man severally as he will." "Every man", again, in context, is every believer. Nobody gets missed!

Notice "he" is a pronoun and must refer to the closest associated noun which is "man". The parts of the manifestation are divided to every believer as the believer wills. God tells you His Will later when He says, "I would that ye all spake with tongues".
---Jeffrey on 3/5/06

Read This Insightful Article: Car Insurance For College Students

3.
Then v.8-10 list the parts of the manifestation, one of which is speaking in tongues.

Notice "to one" and "to another", being pronouns, must refer to the closest associated noun which is not "man", but "profit". God is not saying they are given to different men, but for different profits.
---Jeffrey on 3/5/06

2.
V.7, in contrast to the differences, says, "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal." (Since 1 Cor is written to believers, "every man", in context, is every believer.)

So there are differences of gifts, administrations, and operations, but the manifestation is given to every believer for profit.
---Jeffrey on 3/5/06

1.
1 Cor 12:1:
Now concerning spiritual {gifts}, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

Note "gifts" is in italics to show it was added by the translators. "Spiritual" is the Greek word, "pneumaticos" meaning "spiritual matters".

V.4 says there are diversities of gifts. But v.5 talks about differences of administrations and v.6, diversities of operations, neither of which are gifts.
---Jeffrey on 3/5/06

Discerning tongues story; I visit a church- hear lady in Sunday school pray- after Sunday school I say to this lady, the spirit tells me you have the gift of tongues, oh sir the lady says, please don't mention it to anyone in this church, okay I said, I was just repeating what the Spirit told me. Our natural man cannot discern the spirit. But sometimes the Holy Spirit speaks to our spirit and then we understand. All very interesting.
---mima on 3/4/06

Perhaps I have to some small extent belittled people that believe speaking in tongues is for everyone as not being very well versed in Scripture. So let me just state then that it is simply bad exegetics of scripture to require everyone to speak in tongues. Like St. Paul says, "Do all speak in tongues?" Apparently not, and why insist that the Holy Spirit gives this particular gift to everyone?
---lee on 3/4/06

2.
But what's more significant is Acts 8 and 19, where they didn't speak in tongues right away. In Acts 8, the top apostles, Peter and John, went to Samaria to rectify the situation. And in Acts 19, one of Paul's first questions was, "Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?"

These 5 records tell us it was normal for people to speak in tongues when they got saved! Nowhere does the Bible say it's wrong! In fact, 1 Cor 14:39 specifically says not to forbid it!
---Jeffrey on 3/4/06

1.
Only 5 records in Acts indicate whether people who got saved spoke in tongues. In all 5 cases they did. No records indicate they did not.

Acts 2:4, 10:46, and 19:6 say they spoke in tongues right in the record. Acts 9 doesn't say Paul spoke in tongues, but 1 Cor 14:18 does. And in Acts 8 Simon, who was used to causing amazement, saw something so amazing when people received holy spirit, that he wanted to buy the power to give it!

As for the sign of Jonah , the whole scripture makes it clear that is to a sinful and adulterous generation. Those who commit adultery against the Lord by loving this world. As for speaking in tongues I would not be Quick to speak against the word of God. Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is not forgiveable. Many will lose their souls through their "opinions" and not using the word rightly divided.

Lee; speaking in tongues still goes on to this day. You seem to be negative about this gift. And for some reason you think that God gives just a select few this gift, and it is no longer avaliable. Might I remind you that God promised to pour out his spirit on people. Your studies show that you have not studied well. You don't believe in this gift so therefore, you don't understand it, so it is you who is unlearned.
---Rebecca_D on 3/3/06

I haven't read all of Lee's putdowns of those who speak in tongues, but it's inaccurate to say all of anything or anyone is the same, because that view point doesn't allow for truth. There is no such thing as "all of anything", there are always differences. AOG requires so many hours of Formal Bible Study to be Licensed or Ordained. Lee's observations must have been very limited. Also if one will do in depth study of the History of Tongues you will find they never stopped. That's fiction.
---Darlene_1 on 3/3/06

Lee, why must you always belittle people who don't agree with you as having a 'limited education' or being unlearned? You do this on every blog. Do you realize how arrogant that comes across as? I guess that I could be more blunt. No I do not believe Scripture tells us that all born-again Christians do or must speak in tongues.

Viewing the history of speaking in tongues, I find that after the 1st or 2nd centuries, it basically disappeared except for certain small groups in monasteries.

My observations have largely been on the negative side finding that most that speak in tongues have a very limited education in Scripture or doctrine; thro I was lead to Christ by AOG people.

Rebbeca D, I know from experience when saved you don't receive the Baptism of the Holy Ghost. I was saved at 11 years old but wasn't Baptised in the HG until I was about 22. When the HG came and filled the Temple of my Body I spoke in tongues and then began to receive the empowerment and Gifts which come after you are filled. Differences between experiences were like daylight and dark. I had the Holy Spirit upon me before, but then He came within me to dwell. Acts2:16-18,10:44-47,8:14-17,2:38-39,Acts19:2

Then why did Paul state in 1 Corinthians 12:30 "Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?"?

I see that there are some very sick people out there that believe they must be able to speak in tongues but God will not give them that gift as the Spirit does what the Spirit wants to do.

I am a COG pastor's wife and it is definately scriptural to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance. It is a gift of God to all who have been born again and desire this precious gift. Read Acts 2 and see that the Spirit was given on the day of Pentecost and that the gift is to empower christians today to walk an upright christian life today. All chirstians need this gift and those who ask God for this gift will get it.

I was saved at a home Bible Study, not in a church. Out of the bar life & knew "nothing". I was "baptised with the Holy Spirit with the evidence in tongues" in my CAR on the way home. Decades later I can still speak in this heavenly language whenever I submit to the Holy Spirit. I joined an AOG because their doctrine follows SCRIPTURE. Regardless of the church you grew up in or what someone told you about tongues. It's real. You will understand it when you ask Jesus to GIVE it.

Unconditional love does not mean that you will always be loved no matter what you do, instead unconditional love means that you will always be loved when you truly repent from wrong. God's love is very conditional upon obedience: when we obey we receive the crown of life and blessing and love, but when we disobey we receive the sentence of death and cursing and hate.

Rickey - not of those verses your state actually support speaking in tongues. They simply state that the Holy Spirit is the source of wisdom and power in our lives. One can indeed "pray in the Spirit" without speaking in tongues, at least that has been my experience.

I agree with Lee. Everyone is not baptised by the Holy Ghost (spirit). This is with the evidence of speaking in tongues and it is a gift that God gives to those who desire to have this gift. Lee...Everyone who accepts Christ has an indwelling of the Holy Spirit. They are filled (the infilling of the spirit) when they receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, just as on the day of Pentecost, and the evidence was speaking in tonuges. Glossalalia is God's gift to us to edify the body. The heavenly tongue is the Holy Ghost speaking, it is the language from heaven, and not from earth. So obviously an unregenerate earthling will not know nor understand it, just as they cannot understand any of the things of God, as divine miracles of healing or resurrections or prophetic tellings of past, present and future events, etc.

Part 3

The gift of tongues is to be used when the Holy Spirit deems appropriate.

AOG is more than speaking in tongues..there are several other gifts too...

Corinthians 12:8-10 (King James Version)
8For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues

It is interesting that a church such as the AOG is build around a particular spiritual gift. According to Scripture, the Spirit gives gifts in accordance to His own desire (1 Cor. 12:9) and that not everyone has the gift of tongues (1 Cor. 12:30).

I believe that there are more that babble and think they have the gift than there are those that have the genuine gift of tongues. People go up front, pray with others for the gift, and end up murmuring something unintelligible
