Scientifically, it is droplets of water refracting the light spectrum and breaking it up, causing the individual colours to be seen. Spiritually, it is the promise of God to never destroy all life on earth with a flood again. |

Thanx Lynet, I am also always looking up. There are such beautiful sunsets and clouds and just everything! People are so busy doing whatever it is they do and sometimes don't notice the beautiful sky....I wish more people would look up and notice how awesome the sky looks. |

If we look at God,He is merciful and Compassionate; In Genesis 9:11 God avows "never again will all Life be cut off by the waters of a flood". Next we read, "whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds,I will see it and remember the everlasting Covenant between God and all living creatures"(Gen.9:16)
It is wonderful to know God cares, and is always extending His hand of mercy and Love out to us. |

Lynet: Did you say you were making a book of Rainbows? I would love to try and purchase a copy when you're done. Let me know somehow. |

It's indeed the sign of the covenant between God and man to never destroy the world by water again. What a magnificent showing of love from the Lord that is breathtakingly beautiful and seen world wide, so we don't forget. There are many moountains, rivers, and waterfalls, but the rainbow shines high above them all:) I just recently purchased a new camera. I look forward to taking many pictures of rainbows with it. |

The rainbow is a symbol of love, grace. It represents a covenant of love when used figuratively and in visions. Literally it is a beautiful band of colors caused by the refractive dispersion of sunlight passing through suspended water droplets. I tend to think that white light first gained this split-into-seven-colors-property after the flood. |

Once my son wrote me a letter from college and I wrote him a letter and the two letters crossed in the mail. In both of our letters we described a most beautiful double rainbow we had both seen. He saw it at college and I saw it at home (he went to college in the same state, Michigan) It was the last letter from him before he died. Now every single mother's day I see a rainbow! |

Haven't you heard the message from The Hollywood Prophet? There will be Double Rainbows as a sign of Double Births.
Therefore, the Prophetic Representation of The Rainbow is Fertility and Blessing.

1. Everytime a see a rainbow I'm reminded of God's promise. I live in Michigan and I see a rainbow almost everyday, during all four seasons, and each time I'm almost moved to tears. I sometimes forget to look up, but not often. I taught all the kids in my neighborhood what the rainbow means and had them looking up for them after a rainfall. I've taken hundreds of pictures of rainbows and have been given many pictures by others taken all over this country and in others as well. |

2. The largest rainbow I 've ever seen occured about 20 years ago. All the folk in my neighborhood were amazed, me too. The most I've seen at one time is five half bows going in different directions. This was also witnesssed by my son the skeptic who did'nt believe me when I said I saw four;) The most dangerous spot I've taken a picture is in the middle of the street while it was raining. The most unusual one was taken during a snow storm at MSW, just before my oldest sons graduation. It's awesome. |

I've got a photo of myself under a rainbow, and the most breathtaking was taken against a blackened sky during a thunderstorm. I always have a camera with me. Rainbows take my breath away. God is so gracious to present such a wonderful portrayal of His love for us. I point them out to strangers, and they're always amazed. The scriptural definitions are here, I wanted to share what such a visual sign of God's love means to me. A book is in the works. |

Interesting that the homosexual community has adopted the rainbow as their symbol. |

I checked the Bible from the web. It stated that Rainbow was mentioned 3 more times i.e. Ezekiel and twice in Revelations.
So, it means, not only the Covenant God has made with us in Genesis but it also reminds us of the Judgement Day. |

A rainbow is the example to us of the word of God when you see one it should remind you of the covenant we have through the blood of jesus exzucuh |

The day before Hurricane Katrina I was outside watching evacuees coming up 55N. I looked up and the prettiest rainbow was there, sun was shining too. Couple of days later at the Miss. Coliseum I met a family who had seen the rainbow too. I was handing out coloring books, one was of Noah's ark. The man was reading Noah's ark to his son!! We know that rainbow was a promise from God that all was well and would be. |

Thanks Ulrika! We should've looked at poster's question, not only mod's title; "Bible says Rainbows are?" would be better.
Will add here: Revelation 4:3 and Ezekiel 1:28 use rainbows in describing God (and an angel in Rev. 10:1). In NT, the Greek word is "iris" (arc or circle of light; colored or not), but in the OT Hebrew (being more 'concrete language') uses the word "qesheth" which is a "bow" to shoot arrows, so used of rainbows because of similar shape. |

Genesis 9:11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all fesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood, neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token for a covenant between me and the earth. Genesis 9:14-17 |

Hmph! hate having to do this, but I care more about speaking the truth than looking ignorant, because I jotted down my thoughts earlier before making sure of what I wrote there! IT IS *NOT* necessarily true that there were no 'rainbows' before the Flood! Scripture does not clearly state that; and I don't want to misrepresent God's Word. Rainbows (whether they existed before or not) still remind us of God's promise after the Flood. |

Water_Lily: I can't help but add that from what God said to Noah, apparently the atmosphere of our earth before that world-wide Flood was different enough to keep rainbows from ever forming! There are number of explanations for that from various scientists who are Christians; message me if you want some Internet links. |
