children of light, i was once a fisherman. now i am the shepard. i hold both rod and staff. i am the first. i am the last. i am the rock. i am alpha omega. 112. forgive each other for god will not forgive man until man forgives man. go in peace - or go in pieces. petrus romanus.

"Peter was married and the Roman Catholic Church didn't form until the 5th century. Jesus is the Rock and the Shepherd according to that scripture, not a person."

Borrowed from the Moderator

The rock is that Peter know's Jesus the Christ and that Jesus the Christ know's Peter and it is the same with every believer. We know Him and He know's us. It is the personal relationship between man and God through Christ that is the rock that the Church is built on. Jesus confirmed this by using the masculine form of the word and then the feminine form, alluding to the marriage between a man and a woman as a type of the relationship between Christ and the Church.

1Corinthians 10:4 says "..and that Rock was Christ". And God never changes.
---Helen_5378 on 3/27/07

Himself, Jesus Christ alone is the Rock. "Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of God live." Then Jesus answered that the Father revealed this Rock to Peter, and answered, "And I thereupon to you say, being you Peter, that yet on this Rock I will build me the assembly, and gates of hell will not have prevailing power against this." Matthew 16:16,18. Jesus, he is the only Rock and founder and foundation of his Church.
---Eloy on 3/27/07

Dave and Mima, if that is what Jesus had meant that is what He would have said. But He didn't. The rock is a common metaphor used in a variety of ways, but in this case Jesus chose to put Himself as the master builder and used Peter as the rock upon which He would build His church. We find other comments describing other Apostles as building blocks as well. Because His church is not a physical structure made of stone and mortar, but a living body of faith.

If you read the whole context of the scriptures, you will see that the rock is in fact the spirit of revelation from God. Eternal, without beginning and without end. Satan has no control over inspiration from God. We receive that daily through the power of the Holy Ghost. When we read the scriptures, we understand what we read, when we pray for guidance, we are led. God is the same yesterday, today and forever and the Heavens are not sealed to new revelations from our Heavenly Father.

A shallow misconstrued understanding of this leaves a person with puny, incorrect, cussing Peter as the foundation rock on which Jesus builts his church. A more correct understanding sees the whole statement by Peter as the rock on which Jesus builts his church. Jesus did not say that Peter was the rock, but men for their own selfish ends have used this interpretation.

"If you never look any deeper than the english translation of the Greek words of scripture.."

It's still Rock. St. Matthew used the masculine form of the greek Petra (rock) which is Petros. Otherwise Peter would have had a feminine name not fitting for a male (like Petrina) instead of Peter.

Here's the Aramaic:

"I am also telling you that you are the Rock [Peter] and on this rock I am building my Church, and the doors of sheol cannot draw it in." Matt. 16:18

Jesus is the Rock and He has built His church upon Himself.
---Helen_5378 on 7/25/06

we are all the living rock that Christ planted His church/truth upon for our guide our admonition...we are the church and without us theres no saints..what Jesus meant was..He was planting His truth upon Peter His truth/word..just as He did to others..

Revelation knowledge directly from the Father.

A Catholic,
If you never look any deeper than the english translation of the Greek words of scripture, you will continue to miss out on much of what God has for you in His Word.
---Bruce5656 on 4/21/06

A catholic, Peter never refered to himself as a catholic. You catholics do that. Didn't refer to himself as the pope The word catholic means universal and the catholic church is a part of that universal church that Peter built along with many others.

Eloy-Jesus said: that Peter recieved this Rock of Truth from his Father in heaven.( No, he did not, he change his name to Peter) "And I also to you say, That you are Peter, and on this rock I will build me the assembly,(My church) and gates of hell will not have prevailing power against her.(Amen) (But also do not forget he also said He will give Peter the power to bind and loose and also the Keys to the kingdom of heaven.)
---ruben on 4/21/06

You are Peter (rock) and upon this rock (Peter) I will build my church. It is as clear as crystal.

Thou art the Christ. Thou art Peter. Peter knew who Jesus was and Jesus replied that He knew who Peter was. Revelation of placement in the body of God. The "rock" is meant to be as the cornerstone (used other places). This understanding is the cornerstone of the spiritual revelation church of Jesus Christ. Any relationship or revelation of Christianity by an individual must begin with that "rock" of belief that we know who God is and He knows us.

Jesus said, Whom say you all that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus said that Peter recieved this Rock of Truth from his Father in heaven. "And I also to you say, That you are Peter, and on this rock I will build me the assembly, and gates of hell will not have prevailing power against her. This same Rock of Matthew 16:16, is explained in Matthew 7:24-27. Catholics miss this truth and wrongly think that Peter is the Rock instead of Christ.
---Eloy on 4/19/06

Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. this scripture reveals the doctrine that is rock solid and those who believe are rock solid and they drink the same living water from the Rock that was in the desert that was Christ.

Bruce I am sorry for not explaining, was at work and had to write quickly without reading what I wanted to say.In Greek, Peter is Petros, it is masculine in form, while, also in Greek petra or rock is feminine.
---ruben on 4/18/06

I am sorry, I don't understand the question. Why would he not call Jesus a "petra"? Did I say something that would indicate I do not think that Jesus is the rock?
---Bruce5656 on 4/18/06

Bruce- Then why did St. Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit , also call Jesus a "petra" in 1 Cor 10:4?
---ruben on 4/18/06

Jesus Himself is the Rock- the church will be built upon Him, as the foundation, the cornerstone.

First, He WASN"T talking about Peter, as the Catholic church teaches. He was speaking of the confession that Peter had just made in answer to the question, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ, the Son of the living God."

Psalms 118:21 I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation. 22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the Lord's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.Romans 9:33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 1Corinthians 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
---Ulrika on 4/8/06

In the Greek language, we see that Jesus was using word play to make a point (a pun). Peter's name, Petros, means little rock or stone. The word Jesus used for the rock on which he would build his church is petra which means a rock, cliff or ledge. In other words bedrock or foundation.

The foundation of his church was not Peter, it was the truth that Peter expressed: Matthew 16:16, "And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."

So what he was saying was, Your name is Petos "a stone" but is on the petra "bedrock" of the truth you expressed that I will build my church.
---Bruce5656 on 4/8/06

Simon indicated that he had received a revelation that Jesus was the Christ ... the Anointed Son of the Living God. Jesus said that this revelation caused Simon to become solid like a rock in his faith. When we receive a revelation from God's Word, the same thing happens to us. It changes us, makes us firm in our faith. Jesus went on to explain that this is what builds the Church ... people who know that they know that they know.
---DoryLory on 4/8/06

When we know something there's no changing with every wind of doctrine. There's no doublemindedness, no undecidedness. We just know! The Body of Christ is built up by people who know ... people who have received received revelation knowledge from the Word of God and are mighty in faith.
---DoryLory on 4/8/06

It simply means to build your church on a solid foundation (Jesus Christ).
