Is The Bible An Idol

Do some Christians treat the Bible as an idol, or want it to be treated as one rather than acquiring the true spirit behind its words?

danie, Jesus' words save. They are sweeter than honey and life to the bones. "I esteem the words of his mouth more than mine appointed food. For heaven and earth will pass away, but his words will not pass away." Job 23:12; Mark 13:31.

Danie ... I am surprised that Eloy does not see what you are getting at. It cannot be more important to worship Jesus word's than to worship Jesus Hmself. But I don't think that is what Eloy meant.

danie, I mean exactly what I said, I love every single one of Jesus' words that proceeds out of the mouth of God, for the Eternal Words that Jesus spoke are spirit, and are life. Isaiah 40:8; John 6:36.

An idol is anything that gets between you and Jesus.

Oddly enough, Jesus Himself said that devotion to the Scriptures can get in the way of seeing and following Him in John 10. In other words, Jesus warns the Bible can become an idol.

The Words in the Bible are supernatural. They are holy, they are full of power, they are the inspired Word of Almighty God. The paper and ink the Words are written on are paper and ink.

Eloy: I can hardly believe what I'm seeing here! You said: "it's not the book itself that is to be worshipped, but the contents and the God spoken words..." as if that's acceptable. Not even Orthodox Jews who write 'G-d' would say they *worship* the words of Torah! It is GOD whom we are commanded to worship *not* His words. They def. are as you said 'precious and full of life' to bring about our salvation, but those words speak *of Him* they don't equal Him! Please say you miswrote that.

Christians do not treat the Bible as an idol, but nonChristians may. Nonchristians make idols out of many things. I've seen ancient Bibles that were decorected with gold and diamonds and covered with all sorts of different colored precious gems. But it's not the book itself that is to be worshipped, but the contents and the God spoken words which are precious and full of life.

Here we go again. Daniel, God's word is more than ink and paper. It is the Holy inspired Word's of a Holy God. The bible on your hard drive can't be tossed on a table or abused in disrespect. I think it is good to have the Holy Words on your computer. I can access the words from some great sites. Of course there aren't many sites that still have the good old King James. Shira

[2] Should those electronic Bibles be the only data on my hard drive? Am I tainting them by having work programs next to them? What about all the 'ads' on Christianet next to quotes from Scripture? A guy spends $5000 for a Tyndale NT, keept in a glass case. I got my Guidion NT free in the military and in my pocket. Is it more holy how he treats that collector's item than how I shared my falling apart pages with others?

[1] WHAT is the Bible? Seriously! Think hard. Is it the particular ink and paper COPY that YOU have or the words inspired by the Holy Spirit; not only in millions of copies all over the world, in hundreds of languages, but perhaps more so those words which have been stored in Believer's hearts? Can a book that's kept in pristine condition but NEVER read, properly be called God's Word? Now we can store the Bible in many versions electronically. Does that make my computer holy? [Cont.]

I will say it again: The Holy Word of God is Holy and will get my respect. It isn't just a compulation of 66 books, but it is God's Holy Word. I respect it, not worship it. Shira

it is an impossibility for the Bible to be an Idol an idol is a dead god that is nonexistent.the Bible is the living word of God to dicredit it makes it dead but to have faith in it is power, in the beginning was the (logos) written word and it was God.

Some people allow the Bible to become an idol. It is a reproduction of other books and letters that are our guidebook as followers of the Lord Jesus but, while the words, especially in their original form, are holy the book itself is just a book. But I've know people who won't write in their Bibles or set anything on it or, as someone else has mentioned in this thread, won't allow anyone else to touch it. When it goes that far then the Bible becomes an idol.

The Bible is the written inspired Word of God. It is good to show it respect. The best way to do that is to read it and share it with others. John 17:17, Ephesians 6:17, 2Timothy 3:16, Hebrews 4:12.

I write in my bible but I won't allow anyone to lay anything on my bible. It is not my idol, but it is Holy.
---shira on 4/11/06

I think that that is true sometimes. It was in Jesus day.
John 5:39, "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me and ye will not come to me, that ye might have life."

There are people today who are very "book smart" but spiritual blind.

Also, as far as the actual book goes. I know some who will not cover a bible or who will not mark in one. Even if is not idolatry it borders on superstition.
