I Want To Believe In God

I want to believe in God because I want to go to heaven when I die. It's just hard for my brain to accept God. I was brought up a Christain, read my bible, prayed and I feel like I am loosing it. Like there is no God.

It is easy sometimes to doubt that GOD exists. But there is a lot of reasons to also believe.

There are many good books that help strengthe faith. Such as Evidence demands a Verdict by McDowell. If you have any single question hopefull I can help answer.

I came to faith in GOD while at college and I had origninally believed the bible was false and full of errors. Trust GOD.
---Samuel on 4/25/11

I am in the same situation! :( Could anyone help me?
---Jarcia on 4/24/11

I do not want to just go to heaven when I die. Which I actually believe happens at the resurrection. I want to walk in doing right and living right today. I want to be a person who like JESUS is loving to others today. Who does right because it is right against a world that is filled with sin and hatred. I want to stand for truth and goodness.

I want to treat others with respect and love no matter what they believe. This is part of being a Christian.

Some good books to help are Evidence that Demands a Verdict by McDowell. Desire of Ages by Ellen G. White. At your local Bible bookstore or on the internet there are books about how the Bible is true.

GOD be with you.

Here are some verses that come to mind.
Mark 9:23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things [are] possible to him that believeth.
9:24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe, help thou mine unbelief.
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Deuteronomy 4:29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find [him], if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul
Jeremiah 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find [me], when ye shall search for me with all your heart

I was not raised in a Christian home and reading the Bible was not even talked about. My Grandmother was Christian but my dad and mom who divorced when I was four were not.

I was an agnostic. I kinda of thought GOD might be real but I was sure the Bible was false. But after suffering a major event in my life. I decided to check it out. This started when I was 18 but I did not become a Christian until I was 22 and away at college.

That was 35 years ago. While some days I have doubts the Bible and faith have answered them. Remeber when many were suprized by Mother Terrecies doubts? You can deal with doubt with the help of GOD.
---Samuelbb7 on 6/17/09

I considered myself a Christian until a couple of years ago and I have been fighting this a lot over the last couple of years. My family is protestant and my girlfriend of seven years is Catholic. I just don't believe or don't know, so I guess I claim ignorance, therefore I now consider myself Agnostic, but I don't like it. It is way harder for me to be this way and I think it would be so easy to say I was a Christian, but I just can't believe the bible. I don't believe Jesus was divine and I don't believe his mother, Mary, was a virgin. I don't see how there could be so many religions and "mine is right, yours is wrong". I just can't make myself believe these things as much as I want to. I hope one day I can really believe.
---David on 6/16/09

I also feel that way. There was a time I felt happy and included God in my everyday life. I raised three children all in the belief there is a God. None are in the church this day. I fell from God, stopped going to church stopped praying. I blamed God for all things that went wrong in my life. I'm a miserable person. I read blogs stating that's because there is no God in the first place. It's easy not to believe and not having to be accountable for our sins. But for me it's not that easy. I've felt contentment and happiness early in my life. It's difficult to forget that feeling.

allen we all need god, and the answers for all life's problem are in the bible. If you gave all your money away to the homeless, and if you helped every person that asked you for help, all that couldnt not get you in heaven.Isaiah 64:6 (New International Version)

6 All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags,
we all shrivel up like a leaf,
and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
remember, dont just listen to people. get the proof and read it for yourself.
---batieste on 2/12/09

Allen, you must believe that there was a man called Jesus, because all the historians of the time knew about him, those who liked him and those who didn't. You may believe he was a liar, or a lunatic. That is up to you. As for not believing in God, where there is design there is a designer. A boeing 747 cannot be contstructed by a tornado passing over a scrapyard of metal objects. Similarly bodies do not come from the single celled amoeba without someone intervening, and even then, who created the first amoeba? DNA is a language implying a thinker or designer. Man was not created by a series of lucky accidents. If you believe in evolution, why does it still take two to make a baby>? Lower life forms have the advantage over us.
---frances008 on 12/23/08

Allen, as you say you were brought up Christian but cannot believe in God. Can you please put into words what it is which precludes you from believing in the God of the Bible?

I am very interested to know.

---mima on 12/22/08

Allen, you have the right idea about Godliness. It is a sad comment, but many Christians have always LIKED (pride) being "Christian" and have wanted to be "Bereans", "Israelites", apostles/prophets/disciples and "chosen ones". Many have chosen to love the bible, Paul, and the brethren in Christ (even though only Jesus hung on the cross).

The brethren in Christ are only kinfolk in Christ. The TRUE brethren will not value/request MAN'S grace. As Paul said, God's grace is sufficient for him.

The only works we are required to do is that we should let all that God did be sufficient for us...

John 6:28
"the works of God?".

John 9:3
"be made manifest".
---more_excellent_way on 12/22/08

Having the ability to believe something has no spiritual value (I have faith in the laws of physics, but I don't love them). We are to have a "FAITH for FAITH" (Romans 1:17) because if we really want to know the truth about God ("depths of God", 1 Corin. 2:10) and wish to "draw near", we have to have 2 kinds of faith...

1) faith that He exists AND

2) faith that He rewards those who want to know Him.

Hebrews 11:6
"draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards..."

We must live under the "law of LIBERTY" (James 1:25, 2:12 and Ephesians 2:15) and our love should be made perfect (1 John 4:18, Mark 12:30, Isaiah 29:13).

All verses from the RSV.
---more_excellent_way on 12/22/08

Jesus brought humanity the hope of eternal life with God, but we must have a "more excellent" devotion (1 Corin. 12:31) based on "the GREATEST of these" (1 Corin. 13:13).

The "strong delusion" has existed all throughout history for those who rather participate in mankind's moneychanger empire and glorify themselves instead of Jesus. The most important thing in a Christian's devotion should be their relationship with God (it should be a 2 way relationship), not how much intellectual knowledge of scripture we have. There are many people who don't know how to read at all, but they love God, claim Jesus as savior, and also have a peaceful and just spirit/demeanor/character (a spirit of holiness).
---more_excellent_way on 12/22/08

Be encouraged that mankind's system of 'religiosity' doesn't satisfy your heart and MIND (Romans 12:2).

Jesus said...
Matthew 28:18

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me"

...but mankind rather choose the bible to be a spiritual authority.

We should live by every word that presently proceeds from the mouth of God, not the words that HAVE PROCEEDED two thousand years ago. The bible is only the introductory doctrine of Jesus (Hebrews 6:1) and the "word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15, Ephesians 1:13, John 14:6, Colossians 1:5).

We must "HEAR" His voice (John 10:27) when The Lord speaks to our conscience (Hebrews 9:14, "by the door" (John 10:1).

When we make a clear division between right and wrong (as would a sword, no "naughty", "sneaky", etc.) so that the change from right to wrong is clear and abrupt (with no middle ground, "no shadow or variation", James 1:17), then God's spirit will be able to indwell (the "sword" of a Godlike nature).

Ephesians 6:17 "sword of the spirit".
A peaceful and just person will be ready to learn what The Lord wants us to know.

Initially and spiritually, every human being was made in the image of God (similar to having the same DNA). The true understanding is 'built in' (we need no spiritual teachers).

1 John 2:27
"you have no need that any one should teach you".
---more_excellent_way on 12/22/08

When the inner temple had a gate, it was closed for the six working days, but now Jesus provides full access without the need for any works/offerings.

Ezekiel 46:1
"six working days".

Jesus is the new sabbath...
"Lord of the sabbath" (Luke 6:5).

Worship centers/buildings are unscriptural.

In "three days", Jesus became the outer temple (John 2:19).

We are the INNER temple (John 6:28 and 9:3). There should be no public prayer or 'worship with our lips'. God desires no patronizing, condescension, or flattery (He should be respected).

"walk by THE SPIRIT" (Galatians 5:16 and 25).

GOD is everywhere if you are just willing and open to see.Follow your heart, your head just gets in the way of experiencing GOD. Go back and reread the the words and parables of JESUS in the four gospels. That has always helped me.Sometimes when we hear or see of disasters, we see the worst of things, yet take a look at the response from others around the world, those that are willing to be a "good samaritan" to me that is GOD at work in the world.
For those of you who dont believe in GOD, he still exists to let you live the way you do, thats called GRACE and MERCY.
---jeff on 12/22/08

Allen you may be truly good. But how do you know your concept of good is any more than a product of your brain? Maybe others accept your version of good. What if I have another version of good- maybe good is anything which promotes self-interest and the majority agree? Where would that leave you if the majority-decided your view of good is in fact evil, and decided you need killing to stop your version of good (what we call evil) spreading?

Thinking in a worldly sense scientists can believe they're right but have to prove it with a test separate from their thinking to prove their case.

Thinking spiritually God's word is that separate test-He says we're all sinners who need His free gift of forgiveness and salvation.

Who taught you right from wrong?
Who taught you how to love your brothers and sisters?
Who taught you not to steal?
Who taught you not to kill?
Did you teach those things to yourself?
No man has ever been born knowing any of those things. We all have learned, just like you and know just as much.
---Nana on 12/22/08

I have trouble believing in God as well. Many of you say you need God and Jesus to fight the Devil. Well, if I do not believe in God, then what makes you think I believe in the Devil?

I do not need a God to know wrong from right. I do not need a God to tell me to love my brothers and sisters. I do not need a God to tell me not to steal. I do not need a God to tell me not to kill. I can go on and on.

Why do you need to believe in God? Don't you know how to live life without being a bad person? Do you really need God just to get through the day? I think something must be wrong with you if you need some imagenary person to tell you wrong from right. Not to mention how many believe in God yet still treat there fellow man wrong.

Steven, we're here to help you grow and to pray for you, welcome. While I know many portray the Father as a magic genie whose purpose is to give us everything that we ask for, that's actually not who He is at all. On the other hand, He does supply all of our "needs" (key word), when we open our hearts to Him for true relationship as opposed to befriending Him only to get what we want. Whether He answers your prayer or not, I pray you seek a relationship with Him, I know you'll never regret it.

Lee, this formula has worked for untold numbers of people.

Either we got here by chance (evolution) or design (God).

Carefully investigate the claims of evolution & the Bible. A site called creationontheweb dot com will assist. Im confident youll see that evolution of non-life-to life to man lacks proof, with little good evidence.

Read Scripture-cover to cover-big job but worth it-youll see that what we see around us better fits the Biblical model. Read Romans Ch. 1 verse 20.

Lee, cont.
Ask God to illuminate your reading & I'm confident you'll end up with a personal relationship with our Creator & Saviour Jesus- wont happen overnight but it will happen.

This isnt about proving God but about discovering theres no viable alternative to what He has written for us. And about showing theres no intellectual reason why we cannot take His Word as absolute truth. Its by faith we believe, but not blind faith.

This is obviously a very short version

I like to think that our universe is like a computer and God is the user. Now to a computer the user is all powerful, it controls everything. There is no way a computer could choose something without the user's control. Yet the user is still imperfect, though through a different perspective is omnipotent and outside of the limits of the computer world. So it is possible to say that in the perspective of a computer, the user is omnipotent and omniscient, yet in the user's reality they are flawed.

"Salvation" is not a feeling! Neither is it anything that we do (Eph. 2:8,0, Titus 3:5, Gal. 2:16). One is saved if God has elected him to salvation and Christ has paid for his sins and then applied the word of God to his heart (Romans 10:17, Rev. 19:11). The person becomes a new creation and a son (2 Cor 5:17, Ezek. 36:36:24-29).

Sue; our flesh is an enemy against God. Our brain can't comprehend the things of God. For we must look at things through spiritual eyes. It is normal for someone to question if God exists. I did. But I realized that if there wasn't I wouldn't be here, for many reasons. It takes faith to believe in and upon God, without faith it is impossible to please God. Just believing in God won't take you to heaven. It takes more than that.

Faith. You get in your car and faith it will start. You go to the store and have faith your money will buy you something. You must have faith that God is real, (look around) that Jesus suffered, died and rose again the third day.

The devil believes in God, You must believe in the Son of God. Believing in God will not save you, only putting your faith in His Son will.

No man comes to the Father except the Spirit draw him.

Thank you for all your responses. I will try what you all stated. I just sometimes feel that when we die, we die. We will all just be dust in the ground and people believe in God so they wont go insane thinking about this. The more I try to regain my faith, or the older I get, it seems, the more I am loosing it.

An exercise that you might find helpful is to keep a journal of your prayer request and questions. Sometimes we get too intellectual about God and don't see him as interacting with us personally. It may not happen immediately but at intervals of say 3,6,9 months etc...look back at those prayer request and questions you asked God to help you with as you note them being answered you will see that God is working in your life maybe not as fast as you want but working, then praise him for it.

Susan, I highly recommend you to read the first three chapters of Ephesians over and over, and over until the Holy Spirit gives you wisdom and revelation knowledge. But you must be dilegent. And watch, before your eyes, things will start to happen. It will be like a light coming on when you flip the switch. These prayers of Paul were not just for the Ephesians in their day, but for us as well.

It all boils down to the heart. We have to believe with our heart, not because we want the rewards.
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Like the way a child can believe in Santa with no doubts at all.
Matt. 10:15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

Who can say that they trully believe in God when so many doubt his very word and pick out whats good enough for them. Don't Beat yourself up about it for too long. Learning to love, trust, and accept, God totally takes a process that the majority of Christians go through apart fron the Elected few. Hope this helps. David asked God to hide his word in his heart so that he don't sin against him

If you want to believe in God do the works of faith, faith without works is dead, obedience will bring his blessing, believe on Jesus, repent, be baptized, and get in a teaching church that is full gospel and grow in the Lord , do not be rebellious but submit to Godly teachers and learn to hear God speak to your heart
