Why Should I Believe The Bible

Please explain why I should believe in this triune God, and not believe in another god from, for example, mythology? Because many parts of the Bible sound like very far out stories to me. Three headed dogs, burning bushes, chariots of fire and on and on.

MICHEL, You can believe what you want about the Bible, and Christianity, it will not make any difference in the end. You said in your post that you were a "good" person, well here's a news flash for you. According to what the Bible teaches, "good" people don't go to Heaven, only SAVED people do. IN like manner, bad people don't go to Hell, only lost people, those without Jesus Christ. So, you go on living your good life, refusing to believe what the Bible teaches about Jesus Christ and see where it takes you, or you could always change your mind and accept what the Bible says and receive forgiveness and the promises of God.

I don't recall the three-headed dog, where is that? I know that's not the basic question.

There are some great replies to why believe the Bible in this thread. History, prophecy, many authors over a 1,500 year period are some of the reasons.

Concerning the triune God,perhaps the question could be restated as, does one have to believe in The Triune God to be saved? If so, perfectly understanding that is a challenge.

The Bible is the only source I know that explains the history of the "cradle of history" in the middle east. It reveals the basic conflict that has been going on for four thousand years in the middle east. Extremely fasinating.

Danny, Apart from the proven accuracy of Bible Prophecy, the Christian Bible is the ONLY one giving an answer to man's need for salvation apart from man working for his own gain. All other religions tell you do so much and you "might " go to heaven. Christianity says "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." No questions, no maybes, just you will!
---tommy3007 on 7/16/09

The Bible is the only historically accurate book that explains how everything came to be and why we are here. All the prophesies until now have come true and there is no reason to believe the prophesies for the future will not. The Bible maintains it historical accuracy with archeological findings and written histories of other nations. Now, as far as miracles are concerned, those things that happen outside the realm of physics, the honesty of the witnesses and reliance on the other truths in the Bible can only lead a person to one thing, Hebrews 11:6 But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
---MIchael on 7/16/09

The reason why you should believe in the triune God is because there is no other God - plain and simple.

And you are right, without faith the bible would appear as a collection of mythology and far out stories.
Unless you are born again you can't see, so nothing makes sense. You can read this but you are still blind.

Samuel, my answer is not turning Sue away from God, she is away from God when she posted. If she was a child of God she would not be asking this questions. Can any true genuine believer be turned away from God? Not the elect Samuel. She needs to be saved first. And only truth can change her. Why should I lie and tell her stories that are not true? Just to make her happy? The Truth is that people are lost because they have sinned against God and are going right to hell. They need a Savior. Right now in her condition, she cannot believe any truth from anyone, you or me, she has to have faith in what we say, Otherwise what we say means nothing. Plus Sue has been gone since 2006.
---MarkV. on 7/16/09

Mark you teach in a way that turns people from GOD.

First three headed dogs are from mythology of the hound guarding the gates of hell.

Many parts of the Bible can be shown to be true. Many places have been found. Other parts can be shown to be possible to be true.

The Bible teaches knowledge most importantly medical knowledge that was beyound any of that day and in fact it was not till the 20th century that the Bible was shown to be true. The Bible has also predicted the future. For instance JESUS said we would be fighting over who he is. So here we are fighting over who he is.
---Samuel on 7/16/09

Sue, I can tell you why, it is because if you don't believe in the God of the Bible you will go directly to hell and not even know it. How is that for an answer?
You say because many parts of the bible sound like far out stories to you. Well that is normal for anyone who is lost. The lost cannot discern spiritual matters. It is no wonder you cannot make sense of anything.
You have to first put your faith and trust in the works of Christ on the Cross for your sins, but you don't even believe you have sinned against God and if you do, you don't care to repent, and you cannot do that because you don't have faith. Don't be so surprise. It happens to many.
---MarkV. on 7/14/09

none of you have stated anything to support what he asked...all you say is that because the bible says so so iam saying jump are you gonna jump? i do not believe that i have to go to church and read a book with wild stories. to have a peacefull after life. that is just silly. does that make me a bad person? no it does not i live in guide lines of the bible and have not read it. i live in a home surrounded by christians every day and still have a hard time buying into your teachings.
---MICHEL on 7/12/09

The God of the Bible, God the Father, God the Holy Spirit, and God Jesus Christ offer a good life on earth and life after death. The God of the Bible is good. Are the false gods of mythology? Jesus Christ taught us to be peaceful, kind, and nonviolent. Did those false gods? The real God is holy, the false gods are not. You can pray to God and He will answer. He can change your life for the better, the fake gods cannot and will not.

Danny>>>For a lot of reasons. The new birth, for one. Change of heart, that only the true God of the Bible can give. Another one would be, a close encounter with the living God of the Bible. No other religion can boast of this. Oftentimes, God will tell or show you something, and then later on you see it recorded in the word of God. The closer that you walk with God the more alive the word of God becomes to the believer.
---catherine on 3/23/09

I'm just curious if anyone can provide any sound arguments as to why the scripture of the Christian religion is to be believed as opposed to the scripture of any other randomly selected religion. From an objective point of view ( i.e. not starting with a faith in Christ, or any other religious tradition) - by what criteria is one to choose between one religions written claims and anothers?

Forget the firey chariots and such things,And look how Israel is a nation again. the distresses on the Earth, The wars & the rumor of more to come.ALL the Anti-Christ's that are running around. Europe rising as the world power.Israel was a desert not to long ago, look at it now, even under their circumstances & being the burdensome stone of peace in that area & others. God did'nt have Jesus die for Nothing
---Duane_Dudley_Martin on 2/26/08

You really cannot believe the Bible until you believe God. And the only way to believe God is through His Son's Blood. And that means salvation. You must be born-again. Also, one other note: When you get saved the closer that you walk with God, get to know God, the more alive the word of God becomes to you. You will began to see and understand the truth of God's word. It is a rather slow process.
---catherine on 2/26/08

Sue, you're correct, biblical truths have been corrupted. God began to allow me to hear His voice seven months ago. He is teaching me at my own pace, (slowly:-). A month ago, with the help of God, I began to notice the discrepancies evident in the NT. God is showing me which passages were not written by the original authors. He's opening my eyes.
Pray. Read carefully. Start with something simple, like the lists of the apostles names in Matt 10:2-4 and in Luke 6:12-16. Don't fear, God's love is perfect!

I came to this blog looking for some answers. What I have read, almost invariably, is that I should beleive the bible because it is the word of God. And we know it is the word of God because it says so. Seems like circuliar logic to me. Could not the same argument be made for the Koran for instance?

The reason you should believe the Bible is because if you don't, you give evidence that you are not saved. Only with a heart of faith can anyone believe anything in there. You might not understand much of it, or understand any of it, but faith tells you that no matter if you don't understand it, you believe it because it is the Word of God. He that reads his Bible to find fault with it, will soon discover that the Bible finds fault with him.

#2. If you wish to know God, you must know His Word. If you wish to percieve His power, you must see how He works by His Word. If you wish to know His purpose before it comes to pass, you can only discover it by His Word. We should never be afraid of any text of Scripture. Humble yourself till you can. If your creed and Scripture doesn't agree with you, remove your creed and make it agree with Scripture.
---mark on 8/1/07

#3. If there is anything in the church to which you belong which is contrary to the Inspired Word of God, leave that church and find one which does.Let those other give up the inspiration of the Bible who can afford to do so, but you and I cannot. Let those others cast away the promises of God who have got something else to comfort them, who can to to their philosophy or turn to their self-conceit. But not the believer.

2nd) Locations/names mentioned in scriptures [Jericho, Iran/Persia, Russia/Gog,MaGog, etc] against their past/present histories. Why Egypt still has some laws by 'Jewish' Zaphnath-paaneah [Joseph].

Finally check how Israel has returned to it's 'inheritance' despite impossible odds after wandering the earth over 2,000 years & numerous extermination attempts.

Why religions acknowledge Christ in some form. No Problem!

This is a good question. The same question was asked by Pharoah, no doubt in my mind. Why should he believe in the same God as Moses did? When the last plague was sent on earth to kill the first born, Moses used lamb's blood around the door to protect them, Pharoah didn't believe in this God as Moses did. Pharoah's first born died, and he laid his son on his god, wanting his God to be more powerful than Moses God. It never happened, for Pharoah believed on an idol.
---Rebecca_D on 7/27/07

You shouldn't, reason being God is very capable of making you believe, it is children like you and me who question authority, that know their Father best, wait for hard times to hit you, kind of like being disciplined, then read your bible and you will hear the sound of the multitudes, you will see the Red Sea parted, and you will feel heaven and earth being created, He will make you understand and believe.

Salvation comes from understanding and knowledge of God's Will; His Truth,is the everlasting Testament of Life.We are admonished, by God,to "walk in the ways of good men and keep to the paths of the righteous" (Proverbs 2:20). As a ship needs guidance from a compass, so the Bible is the tool our hearts need to follow what is God's Holy Law.

2. light opens up many of the passages. How we approach Scripture is so important. The unbeliever does not see any light on it. He sees stories where we see God talking to us. Many things we will never understand because each one of us is at a different stage in learning and others are more open to God then others. Whatever the case might be, you will learn from God as you continue your walk. Approach Scripture as humble as you can and you will see so much.
---Lupe2618 on 4/27/06

Hello sister Sue. Let me just put my two cents on this subject. I believe the main thing we need to do before we read Scripture is to come to it with an open heart. What I mean is, we know we don't know much about Scripture when we start as new Christians but we have to believe that this book is God's true word for the believer. Now, we might not understand it in the beginning but when we approach it with a humble heart and ask God to open our understanding and teach us, little by little
---Lupe2618 on 4/27/06

I admit that some things in Scripture are difficult to believe, especially the miracles. But that is the nature of miracles: they suspend the present, physical reality to glorify Jesus.

In the case of the 10 plagues, each was an attack on a specific Egyption god, and their abundance to plague proportions actually shows God's humor in irony.

Pharoh &court called these gods. What happened with too many gods?

Why must you believe in a Trinity There is only one God and he is a Spirit he has a Son his only begotten whom we must honor as we honor the Father they are one by the Spirit the flesh or body is nothing it is the Spirit that gives life. when we look to Jesus we look to the Father he is in Jesus the mediator between God and man. The trinity is an illusion of mans vain idiology
---Exzucuh on 4/25/06

Just because "trinity" is not a word in the Bible, it does not mean that is not taught in Scripture.

As a beginning, How many people are in focus in
Psalm 110:1
Isaiah 61:1

In each three persons are in each verse, and in each of them, Jesus is talking.

These, and other Scriptures demonstrate that the Trinity exists, but first the small steps, OK?
---John_T on 4/25/06

Sue, you need to realize that when the Books were written, the authors were limited to use the "words" they had learned and used in their age. Put your self in John's shoe's when God told him to write what he witnessed in his trip to heaven. For example, All John knew about war was swords, armor and chariots. No jets, nukes, tanks, or guns.

Defining terms used here-'New-ager' is a vague term. It is mostly recycled very old ideas from many sources. Basically it is Gnosticism. Pentacostalism is a 'form of' Gnosticism. It replaces the Bible for a very esoteric, subjective standard for religious experience, and in the end morality. Non-gnostic Christians see the scriptures (or as Catholics, tradition) as the OBJECTIVE standard for Gods rules, standards, morality.
---MikeM on 4/20/06

How about the fact that the Bible was written by many different men whose lives spanned around a 4000 year period. Many prophesies that were given have already been fulfilled. The only ones that have not been fulfilled are those that refer to Christ's second coming and the end times. Topped off with historical evidence and finds that help substantiate it.

Now, No other religion can make a claim like that.

Mod: maybe 'code' is not the correct word, maybe I should've said symbolism? Why all the symbolism? Why not be straight with people? It's like God is playing a game with us. "try to figure THIS out!!"

Anyone following the bible lives on faith. We believe in God & his son Jesus, & the word in the bible as Gods word, all in faith. The difference between our God & the myths gods & egyption gods ( same ones)is that our God follows through on his word & is shown throughout history over& over.
---Candice on 4/20/06

Moderator: no I'm NOT a new-ager. The Bible sometimes sounds like a fantasy. Putting lambs blood around the door to protect your baby? And plagues of millions of locus? Lakes turning into blood? I just dont know...why would God write things in codes if it wasn't meant literally? and if it's literal, I dont think I can believe it.

Moderator - What are the codes you are referring to?
---sue on 4/20/06

The truth of the Bible is found in the prophecy enumerated in the Bible. Make a little investigation find out something about prophecies, go then to the prophecies in the Bible(I suggest studying about the state of Israel, how while the nation was scattered it was prophesied that it would be brought together back together, and realized that it has been gathered Back this very day in our lifetime. Then make a decision based on what you can prove.
---mima on 4/20/06

It is also good to keep in mind that, although many of the things in the Bible are to be taken literally, some of the more strange ones often speak in a symbolic sense, or are visions a prophet had that often involve symbolism. This is a bit of a leap, but it may help to learn Hebrew and get a Hebrew Torah. Some of the more esoteric passages are more clear in their original form.

I once asked the same question. Truthfully, it's not one that can be answered by another person. No answer I received satisfied me. It was only when I cracked open the Bible sitting on my parents' bookshelf that I began to truly understand God's intent. Start with Proverbs. The wisdom contained there is straightforward.

There is no other name given among men whereby we must be saved, other than the name of Jesus. The one the Father sent as saviour, as it is recorded in the bible.

The bible is so far fetched but things from mythology isn't? look at the word mythology, now look at the first four letters myth. That is what it is compared to God. If you can't believe on God and his word, then honey you don't believe nothing. There is no other god or gods. There is only ONE TRUE GOD and that is GOD ALMIGHTY. I know it is sometimes hard to grasp what the bible says, but that is where we need to ask for knowledge of the word and be patient as the Holy Ghost teaches us.

Moderator - Sue, you use the term mythology. Are you a New Ager?
