The spirit is the hidden man of the heart, the part that is born again by grace through faith. The soul is the mind, will, emotions, thinking faculties, personality that is to be renewed (Rom.12:1,2) since the carnal mind is enmity with God and is death.

Soul the part of human's inner nature that is the seat of our appetites, passions, and sensations. The best definition I found I liked is >>>THE invisible part of man. Also I liked this one>>> Natural life of the body. >>>I found this so interesting: That modern non-christian psychology ignores or DENIES the existence of the soul as a substantive entity. The "self" is usually spoken of as a mere behavior pattern, a consciousness, but not a being which is conscious.

As pointed out Genesis 3 says that body plus Spirit is a soul. A number of times the Bible says the soul dies. So when we die the spirit returns to GOD. On the day of the resurrection our Spirit and our new Bodies will be untited and we will be a soul. Alive again to live with JESUS.
---Samuel on 7/21/07

The soul is not the mind, and the soul is not the spirit, they are separate. Each person is made up of a body, which is the building or flesh, a spirit, which is the breath or aspiration, and a soul, which is the life or anima. The soul can be living or dead. When one dies the spirit leaves the body and soul, and goes back to God. The body and soul remain behind on earth, until that time that the Lord will call for the dead to rise. (Mark 12:30, Acts 17:25, I Thessalonians 5:23, Hebrews 4:12).

Spirit and Soul are two separate things. Spirit is the real you (the breath of God - created in His image). The soul is mind, will, and emotions.
---Leslie on 7/16/07

[7] And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul

The soul is that part of us that will live forever, even out of this tabernacle.
The spirit is that breath of life. The spirit of life in us giving life to the soul. Spiritually, life in Christ. That which seeks God.

We are a three being person. You live in a body. Your soul is your mind, will and emotions. Your spirit is the inner part of you that communes with God. Joy9988
---joy9988 on 7/15/07

In very non-theological terms, how about? Soul is that inner part of us that makes our functioning body into a person, with ability to relate to other people
Spirit is that added feature that enables us to be in a relationship with God. But I find it very difficult to understand the difference between the two & I wonder whether it matters.

greetings. The spirit in man is the indwelling spirit, the inner man ,the "true light".The soul is the developing relationship between the true light(your Father in you)and you.Soul growth depends on you .The soul is; you ,your Indwelling and your relationship with him

Spirit is the real, eternal you. Soul is mind, will, emotions.
---Leslie on 1/3/07

Your present flesh(mind) will still lust to do those things that are unlawful, while at the same time your heart(soul) and the Spirit will condemn those thoughts and feelings and empower you to avoid the temptation. But no Christian is perfect in the flesh(mind), and as you go through this life you will sometimes give in to those feelings and will sin in the flesh (in the mind but not in your heart).
---chris on 5/5/06

Chris, you are confusing the soul (mind, will, emotions, and thinking faculties) with the spirit of man. The spirit of man is what is born again immediately. The renewing of the mind (a part of the soul) takes place as the spirit man grows. If it were the aspects of the soul that were immediately born again as you say, we would not need to have our minds renewed nor be renewed in the spirit of our minds.
---Linda6563 on 5/5/06

Very well put Chris.

7. Its NOT POSSIBLE for a Christians SOUL to sin, because that soul has been born again by Gods seed into Gods family: "Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God."(1 John 3:9 KJV) Physical circumcision is permanent and cannot be reversed. The same metaphor applies to circumcision of the heart; once that body of flesh is cut away your soul can't be reattached to it. And Praise God for that!
---chris on 5/5/06

6- Your soul is saved, but your flesh, your present physical body, is still dead and cannot be salvaged. It will perish and return to the earth (you get a new body later). Your present flesh will still lust to do those things that are unlawful, while at the same time your heart and the Spirit will condemn those thoughts and feelings and empower you to avoid the temptation. Then, guilt and the Christian starts worrying about losing salvation.

5- And even when you work not to sin (you don't work to stay saved), sin still happens along your path of Christian growth. Paul sums it up quite well in the book of Romans: see Romans 7:21-25
---chris on 5/5/06

4- After you have accepted the free gift of salvation through faith in the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, and as you grow and mature in the Lord (your continuing sanctification), you will begin to notice some changes in how you think. You will find that your heart (soul) grows more and more in agreement with God and His law (which is spiritual), but your flesh will still want to go the way of the world. All true born-again Christians have a split personality so to speak. cont.
---chris on 5/5/06

3- This "operation" is a spiritual circumcision. Your flesh is cut away from your soul and you are given God's Spirit:

"But he [is] a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision [is that] of the heart, in the spirit, [and] not in the letter; whose praise [is] not of men, but of God."
(Romans 2:29 KJV)
cont.
---chris on 5/5/06

2- "For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Heb. 4:12 KJV)
"Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with [him] through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead."
(Col. 2:12 KJV)
cont.

Rickey, This is my opinion so take it for what its worth. If you are "born again" then your salvation is not an ongoing process. What does being "Born Again" actually mean? The answer is something that God does for you at the moment you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your savior: An OPERATION. Cont.

Ulrika, Jesus was hard to follow by some too, particularly when He started telling them that they must eat His flesh and drink His blood. He lost quite a few on that one. Remembrance has to do with the mind, memories and such. That should go a long way to answering your question.
---Linda6563 on 5/4/06

Ulrika, Rickey said it simply.
---Linda6563 on 5/4/06

Ulrika, read 1 Thess.5:23, Romans 12:1,2, Eph.4:23, 1 Peter 1:9, Hebrews 10:39 and ask the Holy Spirit to open the eyes of your understanding.

#2.The spirit may be defined as the nonmaterial life component of human being, wherein resides our spiritual capacity and conscience and by which we have most direct contact with God's Spirit. We have a Physical body and a spiritual body(soul/spirit).Many in the occult has the ability(by the power of demons) to control their spiritual body. They astral project out of their bodies at will. But thats a totally different story.

The Bible reveals that human personhood, made in God's image, is a Trunity involving a body, a Soul, and a spirit. The soul, often translated "life", may be defined as the nonmaterial aspects of mind, emotions and will in human beings. Is the real "YOU". The soul along with the human spirit will continue to live when a individual physically dies(either going to heaven or hell). The soul is link to the human that its sometimes used as a synonym for "person".
---Ramon on 5/4/06

Chris you were absolutely right about the sin nature part, but our soul has not been saved yet. Since our soul contain our mind, will, emotions, intellect we must renew our mind in the word to get out the old sinful thoughts from before we got saved. Soul salvation is an ongoing process.
---Rickey on 5/4/06

Linda, I thought my thoughts jumped from one thing to another. I am not trying to be insulting, but you are hard to follow. As far as why we partake of the Lord's supper. Jesus told us to do it in remembrance of him. It is like a memorial service. Luke 22:19, 1Corithians 11:24-25

That is why Paul, after years of successful ministry, cries out in Phillipians, "Oh that I may know Him...." When we know Him, we can know even as we also are known.
---Linda6563 on 5/4/06

Each day is an opportunity to bow our hearts to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and have our mind renewed. Our mind is renewed by seeing Him as He is as He reveals Himself in us. It is Christ IN you, the hope of glory (His appearing upon you). Though it is good to hear the Word of the Lord, it is better to know the Lord of the Word, the Spirit of Him instead of the letter.
---Linda6563 on 5/4/06

We contain within us the seed of Christ. It is inbred by the new birth. As that seed grows, it begins to subdue our carnal thoughts and "show up" out of the earth (our bodies). Then it begins to produce harvest...and all of it came from the seed. I love to think about how a lowly seed in the ground that seems so small and whose shoot seems like a mere hair compared to the tough earth, is able to push through even the hardest of ground. Think about that.
---Linda6563 on 5/4/06

This is why it is so important to feed on the broken body and the blood of the Lord Jesus (His death and His life). When we do that, we find out that the old man is dead and the we are brand new creatures in Christ. You will live like the person you believe in the most. This is what matures our spirit man to the place of prevailing over the carnal mind, renewing it and bringing transformation. Just like a caterpillar, everything that is needed for it to be a butterfly is already inbred by seed.

1 Peter talks about a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time and that salvation is the salvation of the soul (mind, will, emotions, thinking faculties, personality, etc.) The salvation of our souls is the end of OUR faith and the beginning of His. The mind with its memories of "Adam" and all the things that have affected you pre-conversion is still unrenewed. We are told to be transformed by the renewing of the mind and to be renewed in the spirit of the mind.
---Linda6563 on 5/4/06

We ARE spirit, we HAVE a soul, and we LIVE IN a body. Salvation to the uttermost touches all three of those by working its way out from the spirit of man into the soul and on into the body. If you read Hebrews, you will find that there is a "drawing back to perdition" and a "going on to the saving of the soul". What is being said there is that you cannot remain where you are. You either draw back or you go on. If you go on, you are moving with a God who is always moving.
---Linda6563 on 5/4/06

The SOUL is who YOU are, your individuality, your "I AM" so to speak, your "heart." Although your individual soul did not exist before your mother and father procreated you, it will exist forever. It cannot be killed by man.
The SPIRIT is the source of power and control for both your body and soul. It is either evil or good, darkness or light, unholy or Holy, unclean or clean, of Satan or of God.
---chris on 5/4/06

"Linda ... when one is born again (or saved or converted or whatever word is "in" when it happens) the spirit is changed, as you say. What about the soul, does that get changed at the same time from being carnal? Or does the soul or personality remain carnal, but held in control by the renewed spirit, with God's guidance?"

When we are born again, we are born of the Spirit. He that is born of the Spirit IS spirit.

Your spirit is the "real you" in which you communicate with God.(John 4:24; Proverbs 20:27)
Your soul is the intellectual part of you.
Check out 1Thessalonians 5:23 and Hebrews 4:12.

Spirit is from a Latin meaning breath. Soul is a greek word, a little more complex. To the beginning, the root beginning, from the Hebrew, God blew from His left Nostril life into the clay (red river clay, as used in pottery, by the Tigris River) that became Adam. The life force seems to be the breath of God. The question, is this literal, or metaphorical? Read Job chapter 1.
---MikeM on 5/4/06

Alan, you ask a very wise question. I agree with Linda 100%. To answer YOUR question Alan, 1) the soul does not get changed, thus the bible says "be transformed by the renewing of your mind." 2)Unless you have developed the FRUIT of SELF-CONTROL, your soul (mind, will and emotios) remain carnal. At any point you can become angry UNLESS you've perfected that FRUIT of SELF-CONTROL. Understand what I'm saying here?
