Why Tongues Are Not For Today

For what reason, according to scripture, do you not believe that tongues are for today?

Moderator - You will be told they died with the Apostles and the Bible is complete today so tongues are not needed. You will get answers from people that God hasn't used them for the 9 spiritual Gifts, but may have used them in other gifts such as gifts of administration, giving, encouragement, etc. Tongues are the least of the 9 spiritual Gifts and one should seek the higher spiritual Gifts.

I keep hearing that the devil does not understand a private prayer language... ok, please explain where the Bible says this at. Was the devil not once an angel who rebeled against God? Ok, now what are demons? Are they not fallen angels as well? It would seem the only one who does not understand what we are saying is ourselves? That worries me. I do not want to open myself to say something that I do not know what I am saying, as far as I know I could be saying something bad, if it is just what a spirit says how do I know it is the Holy Spirit and not just any spirit?

Rickey, the Bible says that tongues was a sign for the Jews. Ok, so if the tongue was a sign for the Jew then how is it any different today?
---andrew on 2/13/10

Moderator thank you for your answer. I complained a long time ago to God as to why He did not give me this gift, and will you give it to me. He said, "you have other gifts". But, you know Satan, he sometimes, and he is a person, would taunt me about it. If the devil can find something to taunt me about he'll do it. But God said, "He was looking for someone like that"!

Whether tongues is for today or not is the question. I firmly believe that it is and to this end, I would like to share my personal testimony. I was raised as an Orthodox Jew, and from a young age was taught to reject all things Christian. Having the need to fill the void within my heart and not finding it in Judaism, I sought solace in other things such as eastern religions, drugs and alcohol. At my lowest point I was befriended by a group of Christians who shared the love of Christ with me. The day I accepted Christ, I was born again, filled with the Spirit, delivered from all my bonds and spoke in tongues. My experience was real, untaught and a free gift from God, something that no one can take away from me or make me believe otherwise.
---Gabriel on 7/18/08

I Cor. 14:17 "For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:"
Paul is just telling people that tongues inside of the church must be interpreted, if it's not, then the person should not speak up but speak just to God. Yet in his own private prayer life Paul says, "I thank my God I speak with tongues more than ye all."
It has a purpose in our prayer life. And in a meeting when interpreted.
---Cindi on 4/22/08

I Cor. 13:8 "Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail, whether there be tongues, they shall cease, whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away."
Had tongues ceased you wouldn't know it. God's word says that knowledge shall vanish too.
There are many reasons for speaking in tongues, in Corintians alone it lists many. At the least it is considered giving thanks well.
---Cindi on 4/22/08

People do still speak in tongues (known languages) today.

But it is sad many people distort and pervert scripture and take speaking in tongues out of the true context in which it was written.

I have uneasy feeling about persons speaking in tongues. I do know that God asks us to search his word (the bible). Man cannot teach you a gift. We are told if people around us do not understand what is being spoken to have an interpreter. The Holy Spirit interprets, our words to God We must be very careful what we "teach" others when it comes to bible. When we start putting things "in own words" and glorifying them we are asking for trouble. Satan knows more then you think.
---Carol on 1/12/08

Betty; that isn't true. When a person becomes born again, yes the Holy Spirit comes in. But that is different than being baptized by the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. MikeM; I don't deny about endorphines, but that doesn't cause one to speak in tongues. Your point is from scienctists and not from the word of God. Jesus didn't tell his disciples (us) now when the Holy Ghost speaks through you and you speak in tongues, it is really a chemical in your brain and not my spirit??
---Rebecca_D on 5/24/07

Mike M the proof of glossolalia doesn't prove there are no Biblical tongues spoken today. Those that truly understand how the gifts work and have the true gifts are exteremely small in number. I can also guarantee you none of them is in a Church that have the nerve to say "I can teach you how to speak in tongues". Whenever someone teahces you how to speak in tongues they are teaching you how to initate "glossolalia". We can't iniate true tongue speaking. That's for the Holy Spirit.
---Matthew on 5/24/07

There are just some areas such as speaking in tongues in which people blasphemy the Holy Ghost by speaking against it's teachings.

---Frank on 5/24/07

Mike just b/c you can explain it doesnt mean its not from God...
---mark_B. on 5/24/07

Harris; Nobody is persecuting anyone. The point was about endorphines as the source of the experience of pentacostalis.

Your fallacy is non-sequitor, you bring up tangential rhetorical points, none which had to do with THE ISSUE ITSELF. Thus my point, claim about pentacostal experience being bio-chemical stands.
---MikeM on 5/24/07

Rebecca; The release of endorphines can be measured, do you deny endorphines exist? This is experienced in many religion/cultures all over the world, glosserlia, on can say 'all the rest are the devil' or one can examine the facts, or be ignorant of them. My point is not an attack, its a revelation of facts.
---MikeM on 5/24/07

Your point doesn't stand a snowball's chance, MikeM. You kick against the goads.
"It is hard for you to kick against the goads," means Paul had guilt and was violating his conscience in persecuting believers in Christ. Paul wrote later that in spite of his blaspheming, violence, and persecution of the church he was shown mercy because he was acting in ignorance and unbelief (I Tim 1:13). Kicking the goads referred to the futility of his persecuting the church."
You enjoy it, MikeM.

MikeM; When one speaks in tongues, it is not a chemical that is released from the brain. This is a first and so untrue. It is the Holy Ghost speaking through a person. Why would you believe in scientists rather than the word of God? It is a gift from God. When man can figure out God, they turn to science. Robyn; Does the Holy Ghost speak through you when speaking in tongues? Or do you "practice" speaking in tongues? If God isn't speaking through you, you just gibber.
---Rebecca_D on 5/23/07

I speak in tongues every chance I get. It enhances my prayer time with God. It has strengthen me and enabled me to witness more strongly for Christ. I love to speak to God using my prayer language. The devil hates because he can't understand it. Hallelujah!

Speaking in tongues is from God. And that is the gift of speaking in tongues. Yes it is still for today. There are people whom have this gift. When God speaks through a person, and they begin to speak in tongues, that is not gibberish. It wouldn't prophetic if it was gibberish. There are people whom practice in speaking in tongues, taking lessons from churches. That is wrong and not of God. A person can pray in tongues. I've heard it done. It is a gift from God, and not everyone recieves it.
---Rebecca_D on 5/23/07

There are three kinds of tongues there is the kind where one speaks in a language that the person has never learned. There is the prophetic tongue, when one speaks gibberish and another with the "Gift of interperatation" hears not gibberish but a prophetic word and shares it as a sign to unbelievers. the last is the personal prayer language of tongues which Paul stated to the Corinthians that he spoke in more than any body else. The rule is simple: if it's not interperated- keep it to yourself.
---Tom on 5/23/07

Tongues,Glosserlia is the release of endorphines in the bloodstream and is completly bio-chemical. Scientist observe significant cerebral blood flow and endorphine increase among individuals during glossolalia, concluding that the observed changes were consistent whith what can be induced in lab experiments.New York Times wrote about the study, and it has been published in Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, Volume 148, Issue 1, 22 November 2006, Pages 67-71.
---MikeM on 5/15/07

A few times I have posted scientific conclusions, studies about the source of glosserlia, no one rebuted or disagreed, so my point stands. I have nothing against most pentacostals, but it should be made clear what they experience is no more divine in origen than any other physiological function.

Does the order of the listing of the 9 spiritual gifts signify their importance to each other or was it just a case of one had to be listed first and another last, with the others inbetween.

Moderator - Some would agree the order is important and I would tend to agree as there is some additional scripture support I Corinthians 14:1. The prophesy gifts would include Word of Wisdom and Word of Knowledge. One certain point is that tongues were the least of the Gifts and it is by far the most common Gift.

Get real people. As with any thing of GOD, the devil will pervert it. Being "taught" to speak in tongues for example. It is real, it is for today. Study the scripture and be used of GOD according to scripture - not according to men.
---Terry on 7/10/06

Some have it right, some don't. Why condemn things we don't believe or understand [Acts 19:1-7]? Some have to be taught to be open or/and 'tarry' for the Holy Spirit more often than not, followed by the gift of tongues. Some people have barriers that have to be removed. I personally experienced a manifistation of The Spirit I doubted once. God's the boss, not man! [Joel 2:28-29; Lke.11:45-(52)54, I Thess.5:11-(19-21)24.] Denying one gift of The Spirit, is denying them all [I Cor.14:18-22, 33, 37-'40']!

Betty, 1cor.14:21 with men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. I would like to address Jack's post about about people teaching other people to speak in tongues. I too have seen this. I am in total disagreement with this practice. I have been present when the Holy Spirit fell on someone and they begin to speak in tongues and it was not because someone was trying to teach them how. Rather I believe it was a true manifestation of the Holy Spirit through the vocal cords of the individual.
---mima on 6/1/06

I'd be more inclined to believe in intepretation had not I heard "Patir imon, o tois en ouranois, agyiasthito to onoma sou..." interpreted as "My children, I am with you to bless you...."

It is, in fact, the opening of the Lord's Prayer in Greek.

You'd think the Holy Spirit would recognize Biblical Greek, don't you?
---Jack on 6/1/06

I would be more inclined to believe that speaking in tongues were a gift had it not seen with my own eyes--and on more than one occasions--people TEACHING others how to speak in tongues. Evangel Temple (AofG) in Houston, TX is one such place.

I would venture to say if tongues are not for today, neither is individual salvation & we're still in our sins, as tongues are contained in the promised coming of a NEW Comforter [Acts 2:39, Jn.14:16-17, 16:7-11]. More than one seminary professor have noticed that those who claim the gift of tongues have just as hard a time with Biblical Hebrew and Greek as those who do not have this gift.

Why is that?
---Jack on 5/30/06

Steve, Paul continues on to tell us "let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret." Why? "If I pray in an unknown tongue... my understanding is unfruitful." ..."I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also" ..."Let all things be done unto edifying." Tongues are edifying when the understanding is fruitful. How many modern tongue talkers can actually interpret? Paul spoke it when he understood it.
---tofurabby on 5/30/06

To exzuc6636, My new name Thomas D. No longer Thomas. Will I be stiffnecked concerning tongues. I believe tongues mostly misused today. If your sitting in church and it's 100% English speaking people why would God choose to speak to us in what we don't understand? At Pentecost those people understood in their own language. They didn't need an interpretor. There are many people that believe as you do, doctrinated in belief by their church as they've been taught. Read it with an open mind. Most can't see.
---Thomas on 5/30/06

Paul spoke in an UNKNOWN tounge which he said his mind did not understand, but his spirit was edified, built up. All languages sound like babble to me except English. All gifts have been manifestest in each century since the Apostles if you read books outside of your theological bent. There are various kinds of tounges which include private prayer, public proclamation, and evangelistic miracle tounges. Blog is too limited to go into all scripture but what I have stated is there.

1 Cor. 14 (the whole chapter) details out how the gift of tongues should be used and (in my opinion) the people that speak the tongues today are not following what was written. Example: "Tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not". Yet, modern tongue speaking seems to edify the speaker only. ...does it even edify the speaker or are they just speaking into the air?
---tofurabby on 5/30/06

Can anyone prove conclusively that the babble politely called "glossolalia" is the same as the Biblical gift of speaking in tonuges, or is it just assumed to be the same?
---Jack on 5/30/06

I am not using the scripture as basis for my dislike towards speaking in tongues. It is just that most of the people I have known and have seen to be speaking in tongues are those people with UNSTABLE personalities. With what the moderator has just stated, the more my dislike towards it is founded.

That is a lie that tongues are not for today. Read your Bible to see that tongues are very much for today. Without tongues there could be no interpretation of tongues in church services. I believe these gifts from the Holy Ghost are for today, and many have these gifts. there are some churches that do misuse them, but thank God I don't go to a church like that. People think that these gifts died and if anyone claims to have this gift they are from Satan. How do you believe?
---Rebecca_D on 5/19/06

Bible doesn't say love is greater than the gifts. The more excellant way; leaving the Old Law behind, receiving New Law of love that came because Jesus is the more excellent way ,what He did for us surpasses all given before. The Bible means all the Gifts are empty without that love Jesus brought. It means no matter how many works we do it is only through Jesus and His Law of Love that we are saved. Every work Christians do is dead without Christ's love in operation, motivating, and directing that work.

Prophecies, tongues, and miraculous knowledge are three of the miraculous gifts that the Holy Spirit used to deliver God's will to men (1 Cor. 12:7-11). But there is something more important or "more excellent" than these gifts (12:31), and that is love (chap. 13). Love is greater than the spiritual gifts because love, faith, and hope would continue to abide (v13) even after the spiritual, miraculous gifts had ceased (v8).

God chose to reveal His will, not all at once, but gradually over a period of 1500 years from Moses to the end of the first century. During that time, certain men were guided directly by the Holy Spirit to both speak and write God's will. But it was God's plan, when all His will had been revealed and recorded, He would end the miraculous powers by which the Holy Spirit delivered the message. Then, the written word would become the only inspired means the people would have (or need) to know God's message.
---chris on 5/8/06

The spoken word benefits only people who immediately hear it. It cannot be repeated to others except by memory (with all the fallibility and weaknesses that the human memory involves). Now, it can be copied, circulated, and made available to other people in addition to those to whom it was immediately addressed. God intended for the written word to be used to guide and instruct future generations of people, even after the generation in which it was written.
---chris on 5/8/06

He most certainly has revealed Himself to us in His Word but that is not Him revealing Himself in us or through us by the Holy Ghost. We aren't to desire signs but instead to become a sign.

Behold, I and the children You have given Me are for signs and wonders.

I would rather be a sign and wonder than have one. That is what the sign gifts bring you to.
---Autumn on 5/8/06

Chris, you are judging what you can't know. I don't need signs to trust the whole Word of God and nether do most of the Pentecostals I know. We adhere to all God's Word out of obedience. All God's Word is perfect, He gave us the Old Testament as a guide/teacher and He always gave words from Him through His choosen Prophets or vessels. God doesn't change His ways just sometimes His methods. You close the door to God's gifts He will not bother you with them. No gifts is denominational teaching not Bible.

Darlene_1, The people who believe that the gift of tongues are not for today are not looking "for excuses not to believe". Actually is is the opposite. It is the belief that Gods Word is perfect; that God's revelation is complete; that his Word is so perfect that signs are not needed, because he has revealed all the evidence we need through his Word; that those who need signs are looking for a reason TO believe; and that those who need signs do not fully trust his Word.

2. No anointed man came to change what God established that day Christ's followers were filled with the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, tongues as evidence . Until God does, man's attempt to change what God set in order is weak. Man looks for excuses not to believe. God empowers who-so-ever-will to not only know truth and obey but to believe. It is surrending knowledge for wisdom and resistance for faith.Only God can change anything, the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.

1.Jesus knew His death would leave a great void in the brand new walk His followers had begun. In His wisdom and love He prayed the Father to send one to take His place ,the Comforter/Holy Ghost. God heard His Son and sent the Baptism of the Holy Ghost with tongues, as given in the Book of Acts. Every time there was to be a change in God's plan for man He sent an anointed man to lead, this time it was Jesus,His Son,then the Holy Ghost to fill that void His son left.

In the expression "tongues of men and of angels" the word "tongues" must mean the same for angels as for men: languages capable of translation. Notta special prayer language, which noone can understand. THey were existing languages used to convey a message with meaning. Pauls expression shows speaking the tongues of angels would be rare. So why do people today almost never speak the "tongues of men" (the usual gift), but only speak the tongues of angels (the rare gift)?

These tongues still contained an understandable message which could be interpreted, provided someone present knew the language (1 Cor. 12:10; 14:5,13,27). The reason they could not be understood, the way Corinth was using them, was that no one present knew the language (14:2). And Paul said, in that case, to quit using them!
---chris on 5/5/06

Some claim "tongues" in 1 Corinthians 12-14 are different from Acts 2. They say these "tongues" are not human languages but an emotional prayer language or "the tongues of angels" (1 Cor. 13:1), which no one understands (14:2,14,19). But the same word "tongues" is used here as in Acts 2. We should not assume it is a different gift without some compelling reason.

1 Corinthians 14:28 - But if no one understood the message so as to interpret it to others, the tongue speaker should keep silent in church.

Hence, true tongues contained a message capable of being understood, so as to edify. If no one understood the message, the tongue was not to be used in the assembly.

1 Corinthians 14:5-12,19,26 - In church meetings speakers were to convey messages that all could understand and be edified. So tongues could only be used in church meetings if they were interpreted, so people could understand.

Note Acts 2:11. Those who heard the tongues, not only recognized the language, but understood the message. They recognized the subject matter as being praise to God. Folks, my question was asking anyone who doesn't believe that tongues are for today to SHOW IT TO ME IN SCRIPTURE.
I ask this because many opinions & beliefs that some folks have are based on their own "experiences" and not on truth.
So can anyone prove, through scripture, that tongues are not for today?
---Rickey on 5/5/06

I believe the movement today is not from God. I believe tongues are known languages (not jiberish). What we're seeing Satan can duplicate. Even Mormons speak in tongues. On Pentecost Jews heard Gentiles speak their language/ vise-versa (authenticating Christ for all) Seeking an experience can become dangerous. Bible says if we have not the HS we are none of His. To be filled with the Spirit means controlled by HS. I believe tongues exist but are rare (foreign missions). Billy Graham has not missed out.

Moderator - "On Pentecost Jews heard Gentiles speak their language" Show the scripture.

So Jesus was a liar, and Paul wrong. Obviously, as they never said that Tongues would cease, but trated it the same as salvation.

The old story surfaces again, that the Tongues was heard at Pentecost. Yes, but they were addressed by Peter in Greek.

At Azusa Street, missionaries were sent out speaking in tongues to speak to the mission field.

the Word says, "I will sing a new song unto Him" meaning from the heart. doesn't mean a song of tongues. the bible also says, "tongues are for the unbliever, proficey is for the believer". meaning if I were in a German church, and no one new I spoke english, and heard a message in english, I'd know it was from God. I would hear the message in my own language. That would be the only time where tongues would be benificial, it's the least of the gifts.

Bible tongues were languages. So I can ask "What language do you speak?", but most make no claim to speak a language. If they have the real "Pentecost experience" like the apostles, they should speak known, existing, native languages. The apostles were glad for people who knew the languages to listen. They deliberately spoke to those people so they could listen. Why then do people today refuse to let people of other languages listen and tell them what language they are speaking?

Do you remember after Jesus healed the blind man and he ran around saying "I only know one thing, I was blind but now I see." when the people asked him who healed him. Well, you only know one thing, and that's what Jesus has showed you. Just make sure it's Jesus and not the other guy (satan). Let the Holy Spirit Lead you and guide you into ALL truth. Keep asking Father God "Is this the truth." Then maybe we can stop arguing over the gifts.
