Righteous Non-Drinker Smoker

Having stopped smoking years ago, and having never been much of a drinker maybe drunk two times. Can I legitimately count myself more righteous than those who do these things?

What is your agenda to ask this question?

You are not more rightous even if you don't drink at all. Rightousness for us, comes from God through belief in His son Jesus Christ. The Bible says that our rightousness is like filthy rags. We can't earn rightousness. He is our rightousness. All we have to do is believe. Abraham believed, and it was accounted to him as rightousness.
---John on 6/18/07

No, you are not any more righteous than others because you do not smoke or drink. A Christian's righteousness is the Lord Jesus Christ. We do not have our own righteousness. We are all on the same level in Christ.
---Helen_5378 on 6/18/07

No!!! No and no again. If you have not been born again, you are a still a sinner. Smoking and drinking has nothing to do with being saved. This should be your main concern. Learn the truth. We have too many righteous people as is. This counts for nothing if you don't know the Lord. Our righteousness is as filthy rags before the Lord.
---Robyn on 6/17/07

The only example I read in the Gospels of this kind of comparison goes something like, "God, I thank You that I'm not like others: extorioners, unjust, or even like those people who have been drunk maybe THREE times, while I've been drunk maybe only two times."

Get the hint?

righteousness is more than temperance and abstinence. Please read Matthew 5:20,48.
---Eloy on 6/4/06

Mima - No you are not more righteous than anyone else. Your righteousness is the righteousness of Christ in His finished work on the Cross. "All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags" Isaiah 64:6.
---Helen_5378 on 6/3/06

mima,do all things thru love to one another.so I suggest you read about the word humility, versus pride.Gods word says we all sin and fall short, also says not one is righteous.theres no difference between you or me or the most wicked person who ever lived, except whether your under the blood of christ.nothing you can do of yourself will ever make you better or more righteous than anyone else.
---tom2 on 6/3/06

No. You are no better than anyone else on this earth. I know people who has never smoked and has never drunk, does that make them better than you, of course not. Many people are self-righteous putting themselves above everyone else, which in fact that is worse than me smoking.
---Rebecca_D on 5/19/06

In a word 'NO'. There are many things that I shouldn't do which I don't do, but there are also many things that I shouldn't do which I do do. We don't all sin in the same way but there is none righteous but HIM.

Do you seriously think Jesus gives some of us a good portion more of HIS righteousness than he does the "really bad sinners"? Because afterall, it's HIS righteousness that makes us righteous. Being forgiven and made justified by his grace and mercy is the same for every one of us, no matter what our past

M.P. I did not see that the post was from Mima till after I sent my reply. I am aware that Mima's questions are to be thought provoking, but didn't realize that this one was from him.
---Madison on 5/8/06

Madison, havn't you noticed yet that Mima asks questions to make us all think - not because he does not know the answer himself? He has been doing this regularly since he first joined C.N. and I say "good for him". We all need a little jolt now and again. Initially I misunderstood the reasons behind his questions as well but he asks so many (no complaint) that I have become accustomed to his strategy now.
---M.P. on 5/8/06

I don't argue with people, I quote scriptures.

"There is none righteous, no not one. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
---Madison on 5/7/06

Smoking isn't a sin & niether is drinking.
Excessive drinking or getting drunk is. No one can consider himself more righteous than others.(Isaiah 64:6) Righteousness is right-standing w/ God. No christian is in any better standing w/ God than any other in the sense of salvation.(2Corinthians 5:21)
---Rickey on 5/7/06

I posted the question like this, because this answer or something like it is the answer you receive when you ask someone why do you think you get to go to heaven? A great many people have rationalized themselves above others, and are taking comfort in that fact and depending on God to use it to justify them.

No, you cannot. Righteousness is not based upon what you have or have not done or what you do or do not do. It is based upon Jesus, who is our Righteousness. You can't get any more righteous than He.
---Linda6563 on 5/7/06

I thought believers were supposed to be humble. You sound haughty and proud. How is that honoring to the Lord?
---Madison on 5/7/06

Mima, no you cannot. You must surely know the scripture Romans 3:10, There is no one righteous, not even one.
However, Righteousness comes from God, through faith, in Jesus Christ to all who believe.Romans, 3:22
You may count yourself fortunate, though, that you have never been ensnared by these vices. But you may not boast that you are righteous by your own efforts. That gift comes only from God, by faith, in Jesus Christ.

No! Romans 3:23...

Think about this, Mima.

The Devil doesn't smoke, drink, use drugs, dance, play cards, go to the movies, or engage in pre-marital sex.

He knows the Bible completely in all languages.

He even believes in Jesus and talks to Him.

But he's still the Devil.
