I have less than a handful of prophecies that have been true over an entire lifetime.
I do steer clear of manmade prophets, with prophecies that have been pulled out of their minds.
---Michelle on 10/29/07

All of the gifts come as the Holy Spirit wills, not as we will.

A prophet is often a preacher, teacher, too.
Are you a pastor, evangelist, teacher or apostle?
A prophet has revelations through God's Word and can interpret the plan of God for the Church.
Do you interpret the plan of God for the Church, if not, probably not a prophet.
---Bob on 10/27/07

What you're describing, Darlene, is a word of wisdom - about the future.

Word of knowledge if it's about the present or past.
---Bob on 10/27/07

Gift of prophecy vs. the prophet.
A gift of prophecy is not in greater measure as the office of a prophet.

If a lay person got up and prophesied or if a pastor, prophet, evangelist got up and prophesied - theirs would be stronger than a lay person moving in the gift of prophecy.
---Bob on 10/27/07

If you are not in one of the fivefold ministries, you are operating in the gift of prophecy. The greatest 'anointing' will always go with the office.

The word of knowledge - tells or shows what is happening right now or what has happened.

Word of knowledge pertains to the present or past.

Word of knowledge should be never be used for anything but helping people. A word of knowledge should not discourage or break someone down, only help.
---Bob on 10/27/07

The word of wisdom - shows what is going to take place in the future.

Word of wisdom - deals with things that are to come.

Word of wisdom - future and
Word of knowledge - past, present

can be given by someone in the laity but still do not make someone a prophet.
A prophet holds one the fivefold ministries and is in a leadership position in the church.
---Bob on 10/27/07

The greatest measure of three revelation gifts will be given by the fivefold ministries.

The greatest demonstration or measure of the word of knowledge, the word of wisom and discerning of spirits will come from the prophet rather than the layman or laity.
---Bob on 10/27/07

A lot of people are calling themselves prophets who do not have that measure that the prophet has. They don't profit anyone, but do profit themselves.

The prophet, operating in the gift of discerning of spirits warns against false doctrines, false prophets, and false prophecies.
---Bob on 10/27/07

All of the revelation gifts reveal knowledge.

A word of knowledge is knowledge
A word of wisdom is knowledge
The discerning of spirits is knowledge

Unless you are in one of the fivefold ministries, leadership, your gift will not be in that greater measure.

Don't get mad at me, that's the biblical way the gifts are given.
---Bob on 10/27/07

Michelle,God has used me in prophecy-foretelling something happening in the World, natural or religious, and the Word of Knowledge which isn't about things in future events in the world but about the persons life you are giving the Word to. It can be past, present, future but always confirms what God is already telling that person in their heart. There's a big difference and I know the difference through experience. I agree having the Gift of Prophecy or other Gifts doesn't make a person a Prophet.
---Darlene_1 on 10/22/07

Darlene, the information kind of prophecy you are talking about is a word of knowledge.
It's often confused for prophecy. That would fall under the gift of prophecy, but not a Prophet. Those are separate, someone in the laity can have the gift of prophecy, but not be a Prophet.

A prophet's prophecy is confirmation.
---Michelle on 10/22/07

Michelle.prophecy's also information. The first thing God did was give me a heart to pray, later I received the Gift of Prophecy, the Holy Ghost spoke through me in church. That wasn't all,God let me see things which came to pass,I've seen train wreaks, hurcaines, airplane crashes to name a few, then I've seen on TV News the exact same pictures I saw with the Spiritual eye and prayed for God to protect people. It didn't take long to realize seeing or feeling something happening, was so I could intercede.
---Darlene_1 on 10/17/07

Michelle,I don't believe having the Gift of Prophecy makes anyone a Prophet. Prophets did many things, not just foretelling. They healed, raised the dead, kept the widow supplied with an ever filling bin and more. Even though a person now may have 5 or more Gifts of the Spirit,it still doesn't make them a Prophet. Sometimes people are too ready to accept a "Prophet" without trying the Spirits in operation.
---Darlene_1 on 10/17/07

The Bible says the fivefold ministry gifts cannot be imparted by man.
There is so much misuse of the fivefold callings in the Church and among the Body.
Cults, even pentecostal/charismatic churches operate not through godly leadership but through intimidation and fear.

---Michelle on 10/17/07

"Which ones have happened in your life?"
Those would be words of knowledge.
Some Christians gravitate to charismatic
meetings to get another 'word from God'.
After several years, you can have a large collection of predictions with few coming to pass.

Prophecy is confirmation, not information.

---Michelle on 10/17/07

Personal words of knowledge are often confused with prophecy. They are not the same. Operating in the gift of prophecy doesn't make someone a prophet.
A prophet interprets the plan of God for the Church. They speak by inspiration and revelation from God's Word for the Church.
I have not ever witnessed a prophet among the laity in 30 years. There are many in the laity that believe they are prophets but have confused a gift of prophecy for a prophet.

There are two important things about prophecies or any other sign:

1. What doctrine comes with it?
2. What is the fruit in the lives of the people involved?

There was one itinerant prophet who actually stood in the pulpit and said, "Jesus couldn't perform any miracles after His resurrection because He didn't have a physical body, and the Holy Ghost needs a physical body to work through."

And people were eating up this garbage with a spoon!
---Jack on 10/17/07

If the prophecy is not from God ''Ye shall know them by their fruits''.

They will not reveal God, will not come to pass, will not be specific, time and dated as I posted before and it was deleted.

Numbers 12:6
''If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him and will speak unto him...''

Samuel 23:2 '' for the prophecey come not in old time by the will of man: but of God spake..''
2 Peter 1:21

''God who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in times past unto the fathers by the prophets, hast in these last days spoken unto us...'' Hebrews 1;1,2
---Carla5754 on 6/24/06

Good analogy, John.

The Didache says that if an itinerant prophet comes to your church and says to give someone something, you are to listen to him. But if he says, "Give me money or something else," he's a false prophet.

Think about it.

jana, all the prophecies that are in the bible are part of my life, ones to abraham and all of his descendants and all that jesus gave in the new testament. 100s of them. And 100s more that are promises. We have prophesies today concerning church issues, but if they as with all matters don,t line up with Gods word they are lies, or false doctrines.people can say they are prophets and prophesy , but if their wrong once they ain,t no prophet.

11. The Sovereign Lord of the Universe is in control of everything. Satan is but a servant to the Lord. He is permitted to continue until God's time is right, and yet what he does is never outside of God not been able to stop him when He so pleases. He will never, ever be Sovereign for he is a created being.
---karen on 5/9/06

To not believe prophecy would go directly against Scripture. Paul said that all may prophecy in the assembly but let the others judge. It is as extreme to not listen to prophecy as it is extreme to believe everything you hear. People need balance. When you sit too far on the left or right of a bench, you fall off.
---john on 5/9/06

Mima, perhaps it all goes back to the simple fact, people who are not immersed in the Holy Ghost can't fathom the deeper things of the Spirit. It's like a person wading in the water to their knees and someone swimming under the water, the wader only sees whats on top and not what is underneath, but the swimmer sees the breadth and depth of the full picture. I think this is why those who have more, and yes it's more, I've Had it both ways, there's a difference, want others to have all there is from God.

Is very interesting to see the two extremes concerning prophecies. One group calls all prophecies hogwash and will laugh at you to your face. The other group, of which I am a member, will absolutely swear that their testimony about prophecies is true. It's like the gift of tongues. Those that do not have it belittle it and deny it, those who have the gift can't understand this attitude.
---mima on 5/9/06

With the exception regarding Christ's birth, ministry and life, I don't believe on anyone who claims that he/she is a prophet and/that could give statements regarding the events that could happen in the future.
---Bebet3754 on 5/9/06

You would not believe me.
