Is Wearing A Cross Wrong

My friend told me that to wear a necklace of Jesus on the cross is wrong and even having pictures of this is wrong. That was the form of capital punishment back then so it would be like wearing a person strapped on an electric chair now a days. Is this true?

Many years ago I use to wear a cross, which I no longer do.

We need to learn how to try not to let what we wear outside, work it's way inside, but what is on the inside regarding Christ, be lived on the outside and seen by others.
---Rob on 5/12/10

aka_joseph:

Agreed. I personally prefer not to wear demonstrative things (crosses around the neck, WWJD T-shirts, Christian tattoos, etc.) for the simple reason that if I'm acting properly, people won't need such things to know that I'm a Christian, and if I'm acting improperly, I won't be immediately seen a hypocrite and bring reproach on the name of Christ.

A lantern never needs the words "I am a lantern" written on it. If it's shining on a hill, people immediately recognize it for what it is, and if it doesn't work, then the words are deceptive and false.
---StrongAxe on 5/10/10

StrongAxe,

I agree. When I see a cross with or without Jesus on it, it reminds me of Jesus at different stages. To be honest, I lean towards 'on'. Fortunately, the cross looks a little better than an electric chair or a pile of rocks. :~)

I wear a hat with the word Jesus on it. Sometimes, I shudder and do not wear the hat. It is not that I am ashamed of His name. It is that I am ashamed of me and how I act when I wear it. I think if we do wear a symbol that states our belief in Jesus that we should make sure that He is "put on" first in our hearts before wear Him on the outside for others to see.
---aka_joseph on 5/10/10

aka_joseph:

If Jesus had been electrocuted instead of crucified, wearing an empty electric chair would have exactly the same symbolic significance as wearing a plain cross does now (and similarly wearing an electric chair with Jesus still in it would have the same significance as a cross with Jesus on it has now).

And yes, Eric's statement is profound. When Jesus told us to bear a cross, it was symbolic of a burden so heavy it's almost impossible to bear, not a cute fashionable piece of Jewelry that just says "I'm a member of the Jesus Club too". We're supposed to proclaim Christ's death until he comes again by our actions, not by our clothes.
---StrongAxe on 5/9/10

To address the question as it was presented. Yes, it is true that crucifixion was a form of Roman capital punishment. Stoning was for the Jews at the time.

As far as the electric chair association, that is not the same thing. The cross means that Jesus rose above his capital punishment to free mankind of the Law and provided a cover so we could stand in the presence of God again.

As far as buying useless jewelry that profits little, I will give you my address so I can buy the clothes and food that my kids need.

//Jesus never asked us to wear the cross, He told us to bear the cross :-)// -eric on 6/23/06

I do not think Eric even realized what a profound statement he made at the time.
---aka_joseph on 5/9/10

I do not believe the movie, "Passion of the Christ" was uplifting or in anyway did it show the total humiliation and torcher of Jesus Christ. What it did was to remind us of the prize He paid for our sins. Just learning what He went through could never really express what He went through and only through a something like the movie could that really reach our hearts. Now when I remember back what I saw, which was not even close to the real punishment He went through can we appreciate what we received who are not worthy of that sacrifice.
A cross without Christ on it is very exceptable since He has risen.
---MarkV. on 5/8/10

A cross with Jesus on it recalls the time when he was suffering before his death. A cross without Jesus on it recalls the time after his resurrection. Both kinds of crosses recall events that were in the past. The cross Jesus died on has decayed and moldered into dust almost two thousand years ago.

If, however, one is commemorating an archetype, the first commemorates Jesus's willingness to die for us, and the second commemorates his victory over death - both things that are worth commemorating. Saying one is more important than the other is foolish hair-splitting.
---StrongAxe on 5/5/10

Sue: I don't see a problem

Each of us is different in how we respong to symbols - if wearing a cross is a good way for you to remember Jesus, that it's good for you to wear one

your comment about the electric chair is too minimal: better some really horrible torture machine

But I think the real torture was echoed in 'why have you forsaken me?' - Jesus was 'rejected' by God, as He had taken all the sin of the world - and this would have occurred whatever the means of execution was, though crucifiction was one of the worst
---James on 5/5/10

I don't have to take no quiz. I have my own ideas, you know! No, it's not true. However, if an innocent man was put to death it wouldn't be a bad idea. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MAN TODAY? Why can't everyone mind their own business. If a person wants to wear a cross on their forehead, let them do it. Ask yourselves, "am I so great"?
---catherine on 5/4/10

I reviewed some of the answers and I must admit, when I am in church behind the pastor is an "empty" cross. This is a great comfort to me knowing that Jesus has paid the price that I could not pay... he paid with His life at Calvery. Personally, I do not like churches with Jesus "hanging" on the cross. The cross is empty, the tomb is empty. He was crusified for all of us and if we believe that He died on the cross, was buried, and rose from the dead, we will be saved, and I placed my faith in Him many years ago. He took my place on the cross. He paid for my sins past, present and future.
Jim King
---Jim on 5/3/10

sue, it is not wrong, yes the form of capital punishment, but the capital punishment belonged to you, and instead of you being strapped on an electric, Jesus volunteered to go in your place so that you could live. He payed your price, for the payment for sin is death, so when he was slain upon the cross it was for you that he did it because he himself was innocent and holy, and instead of you being executed he took your execution upon himself. So the cross you wear around your neck symbolizes how much Jesus loved you that he died for you in your place. So there is nothing wrong with displaying Jesus' sacrifical love for you on a necklace or a piucture.
---Eloy on 5/4/10

Regretfully, this will also mean the removal of any and all crosses visible from any christian church as this may also offend, furthermore, just like the case of the gollywog doll in england, any jewellers displaying a christian cross to the naked eye, could be reported for a hate crime, as would any church defying the order set by government. I am not a strict christian, but i believe in the christian god and respect all other faiths. I think its time for the christian church to take a stand, as did our lord jesus christ. The christian faith must not be pushed underground, as others would follow and this must never happen. God bless all christians and my respects to all other faiths
---joe on 5/3/10

Almost everyone wears a cross but one that doesn't have Jesus on it.I have a lovely 14 caret gold cross that I wear to church at times and on special occasions. The cross is now empty but a proud symbol of christianity-IMHO.I am not catholic but I've never seen anyone even a catholic wearing one with Jesus on the cross. Not even a couple of catholic priests I met while visiting my cousins wore one. They didn't even wear collars.
---shirley on 11/3/09

After excepting the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior a person in China asked me, what should I do go buy me a cross now?
Another word this person acquainted the wearing of a cross with one being a Christian. Of course the cross under the clothing.
---mima on 11/3/09

Not quite. Jesus was executed, but he was being executed in the place of you and in the place of me. You see, we the convicted should have been the one being executed, and not innocent Jesus. But because he loved us, he laid down his life for us. Because the Lord our God loved us so, he chose to take our conviction upon himself and take our sentence of condemnation in our place, so that we could live. So wearing a cross or a crucifix or having pictures professing Jesus's sacrifical love for us is a good thing.
---Eloy on 11/3/09

Either way is fine. On the cross reminds us of the sacrifice, the passion and just how much he suffered for us. Off tells us he is risen. The choice is yours. Actually you might want to have both and wear them on different days depending on how you feel.

This is coming from bias and ignorance.
Ask your friend to recite the verse. When someone says its wrong they need to site the verse where it says that. Otherwise they are speaking out of their mouth. Which is not scripture, but evil. (Matt 15:17)

Some have misunderstood what was asked. The cross is not the problem but wearing a cross that has Jesus still on the cross. Some believe that those who wear that type of cross have not gone to the next step in their understanding of the gospel.Jesus isn't on the cross. He was taken down from the cross, so that He would rise on the third day Easter. Others see it different, that it shows what He did for us ( by hanging on the cross)He paid for our freedom and the cross became our bridge to the throne of God. Either way you wear it with Jesus on the cross or just a plain cross, wear it because you believe in what it represents, the cost of salvation for all the world. The unspeakable Love God has for world. John 3:16
---Lee on 11/2/09

NO way its wrong. Its a beautiful reminder of just how much God loves the world in spite of our sin.

You never know when a man might see that cross around your neck and start asking questions. That might be the glorious day he finally meets his Lord and Savior.
---Jack_B on 11/2/09

I am a man and wear the cross to REMIND who I belong to. I am against wearing a cross that has the body of Jesus on it. To me, this is just keeping Him on the cross.
---Terry on 11/2/09

Well,if Jesus was electrocuted, then I would wear a necklace with a electric chair on it, around my neck. It is a personal preference. I rather like my crucifix. It makes me feel good all over. It makes me happy to know my God died for me and loves me that much. Words cannot really exlain what I feel when I wear my cross. All I know is I am glad Jesus paid for my many sins.

Arthur Blessit lugged a cross around the world for 40 years!
Many Converted to Christ.
I suggest you all see the movie-opens Fri. March 27-09.

Lets see the power of the cross.
Lets see God move.
Lets see "The Cross"

the Bible is clear about the importance of the cross
1 Corin1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing-but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.-Gala6:14-May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me & I to the world.-1 Corin1:17
For Christ did not send me to baptize-but to preach the gospel not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
---paul on 3/27/09

Steven-Wearing a cross is NOT wrong, but is for weak Christians who need a material object to remind them of the gospel.

Oh my! Last time I heard -we are in the flesh which is not strong. And that we have to pray alot to keep close to our Lord and not fall into earthly desires and distractions.

So wearing the cross or symbols of faith I love to surround myself with, so that I am reminded all the time to keep my focus on the Lord.
It is a good tool to use, symbols of Christ the Lord. It reminds me to pray more!

That is good.Amen?
---paul on 2/24/09

I wear the crucifix to symbolize the fact that if Jesus can go through that for me - then I can go through life for him!

I'm a Christian. Ever since I was a child I have been wearing a cross necklace around my neck. I don't see this as bad or anything. To me, it symbolizes that I am Christian and I believe in God. Also, I love wearing it. Now, it doesn't have a picture of Jesus on it like you mentioned, but it's still a cross. Some people wear religious things as it symbolizes what they believe. I don't see it wrong showing you believe in Jesus Christ. If it is wrong, then priest, nuns, lay ministers, and other religious people are wrong. Because I know they have a few pictures of the cross and Jesus. Jesus died on the cross. Truth being shown.

Wearing a cross is NOT wrong, but is for weak Christians who need a material object to remind them of the gospel. As they become stronger, they will not need a material reminder. Our faith is not having gold, stone or wood to remind us of Jesus. Our faith is of the mind and of the spirit.

Wearing a cross signifies that you are a Christian is wrong because even non Christians wear a cross because "it is fashionable." Anyone can wear a cross, but it doesn't mean that person is a Christian. If a nonChristian sees another nonchristian wearing a cross and is sinning, that confuses the first nonChristian.

Frances--
Are we supposed to know what the PTB is/are?
I'm sure I'll regret asking...but my curiosity is piqued.
---Donna66 on 2/16/09

I used to wear a cross around my neck often.
But the cross is so often worn by people who appear to be criminals (or maybe just frank sinners) that I don't wear one anymore, except to church. A lot of my favorite jewelry contains, somewhere in the design, a cross.

I'm beginning to collect other Christian symbols that can be worn... some forms of icthus, loaves and fishes, Bible, nails, crown of thorns etc. It's meaningful to me. Sometimes other Christians notice and identify themselves to me as brothers or sisters. One in a while someone will ask me what a certain symbol is or means. I then get a chance to explain the Gospel to them.
---Donna66 on 2/16/09

Frances ... Yes t is a matter of choice for Christians, and like you I wonder ehy non-Christians wear a cross.. It is of course that for them it is just a fashion accessory. How sad.

I saw Mel Gibson's film and found it most unpleasant. It seemed to be full of excessive gratuititous violence, which spilt the message. Jesus had a human body, & I do not think a human body could continue to funtion after all that punishment ... let alone carry the cross.

But other Christians have found it uplifting & they say that until now they had not fully understood Jesus' suffering.

It is a matter of personal choice. I tend to ask people wearing crosses if they are a Christian and show surprise or confusion if they say they are not. I also would like to add about Mel Gibson's film, that some people say only Satanists would relish seeing the Saviour suffering for hours on end. Most of us can read our Bibles when we want to be reminded of what he went through for us, but to make it into profitable entertainment seems strange to me. Maybe I am strange. Maybe I am wrong in some way.
---frances008 on 2/15/09

If wearing a cross is wrong, then saying Mel Gibson's 'Passion' was a good film, is also terribly wrong, and twisted.

I say that wearing a cross is symbolic of being a Christian. However, the fashion world has hijacked this symbol of ours.

Also, if you think a cross will somehow save you, it will more likely get you sent to the guillotine first.

Now is a time to keep your Christianity secret from the PTB. Of course going to church is fine since the PTB control the churches.

Look who is telling you this, is it me?
But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness,

Janine, why is it, I can not control crying. Do you think I like to walk down the street, making believe, I have something in my eye all the time? Just to day, a bit of a sandwich, I go off!
Just saying thank you! Sometimes I feel like a nut. Why Janine, only because, I know what he did for me. And I can not thank him, its a free gift! We hurt him everyday, and he forgives us.
Here I go. Just one more thing, Janine, you probably believe, you believe, because you believe it.
Not So!

Bless you
---TheSeg on 2/12/09

Janine2/11/09to keep him on the cross is saying that he is being crusified every day and they think it is a reminder of what he has done for us, but he died and rose again, and we don't have to work our way to heaven.

Janine if you knew anything really about the Catholic church, you would know that they value all 3.

Jesus's death- on the cross-His Divine Merc
Jesus's resurrection- the empty cross
Jesus's return- He is alive yet holds the marks of the crucifixion on His body still to this day

Remembering these things does not mean I have to work to get to heaven.

AMEN Paul!

Rhonda,
What Christ?!
Sister, there is only one Christ. Jesus Christ, our lord and savior. The Word become flesh and we beheld his glory as from the one and only Father. Jesus Christ who crucified his body to save us all. The Jesus Christ who took away the sins of the world.
The one you say does not have the Holy Spirit which is of the Father and is of Jesus Christ. Sister, like I said, don't know your denomination, but one that produces the fruit of hate is certainly not the Fruit Of the Holy Spirit which is Christ/God.
For the fruits see galatians 5.

Would like to share in God's Word of "Life"~flesh or soul. I believe we'll both be edified in the process!!!

A great place to start is with God's reason for sending us our messiah Christ and His purpose for being in the World.

The reason God sent Christ was so that we would have life eternal through Christ with God in Heaven.

We were bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's(1Cor.6:20)

The body being spoken of here is the soul. For sin and death has been condemned to the flesh and it shall never have life eternal but will return to the earth, not to God.

F.Y.I, Yeshua is not the only Jew to have died on a cross, during the "Crusads" Jews that did not convert to "Christianity" was burnd alive on a cross, that is why they haet the siet of one.

If the preaching of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, how much more the very image of Christ crucified?

That your friend objects to a crucifix says a lot about your friend--none of it good.

And don't forget, in Mahometan countries, this will get you attacked, if not killed.

shawn m.t., long time no here!!, i have been reading people's posts. Just taking a break.
You are correct on that. I believe wearing an empty cross, or the sign of the fish, is a great way to proclaim that you are a Christian.
I used to wear a cross with Jesus on it, but I stopped.
The one good thing I got out of it was my son asking me who that was. So, I explained to him about Jesus, and how Jesus is alive and not on the cross anymore.
What got me was my son asked if Jesus wasn't still on the cross, why was Jesus still on "my" cross? so, I stopped wearing it.
The mind of a child so wonderful, isn't?

To Whosoever has an ear to hear?

We are not to view Christ as STILL being dead on the cross but as risen in to Heavenly Places, where He await to later come from to redeem us.

To wear an empty crosses or have pictures of empty crosses helps to remind us that His is not dead but alive and that we're to also pick up our cross and follow Christ.

Just don't forget that Christ is risen from that cross and is alive, if you do wear the cross with Christ hanging on it.

No the cross is a symbol of what Jesus came her to do. Die for us to save us.
Check out Aurthur Blessit who carried a cross around the world for 40 years to almost every country.

Wearing a cross or emblem is not wrong but is a statement of ones love or even belief or grief.Like tying a yellow Ribbon as the song says. Those who disagree are expressing an opinion which is not congruent with the idea of the wearer, and does NOT count as it is AN OPINION.This is so old it is growing mould.

---glenn on 9/16/08

wearing a cross is not considered wrong, but wearing one with a Jesus on it may be seen as crusifying Jesus again, i dont belive having a picture of it is considered wrong, but i couldnt say with that im sorry
---mook on 9/14/08

I don't see anything wrong wearing your cross, and if your friend doesn't like it then, ask your friend if she is a Christian or know what the cross means for you, and maybe if she or he isn't a Christian then maybe you can led them to Christ.

I do not think wearing a cross around one's neck is wrong. No way. We are slaves of Jesus Christ. Why not let the world know it. Sometimes the unsaved looks like the saved now and vice versa. I want the world to know who I serve and obey. The cross is not needed to do that, in all respects ,but I like to have the option of wearing it(cross) if I want to. The world wears them. Huge ones(bling). Why can't I?

The second command reads,""Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them" the last phrase shall not bow thyself down to them would seem to be the very condemning of those who do so.

Personally I have an empty cross, and yes I wear a cross sometimes there's nothing wrong with it, in fact it's a reminder to me that when I leave the house with a shiney cross around my neck that I represent him.

It makes me more mindful of my sin, and if you need to have Jesus nailed to yours then so be it because we both know where he really is.

It's funny you ask because my cross made someone ask me about da vinci code the other day and I got to tell them about the REAL Jesus.
---Pharisee on 10/1/07

Intersting. In Revelation the church of Smyrna receives no condemnation. This church was accused by the Jews of the time of being athiests because they had no symbols. Jesus is no longer on the cross so to have this image hung around ones neck is horrible. Unfortunately the flesh has listened to Satan and has been told to make this image as a symbol of Christianity. Christianity, however, is not defined by symbols it is represented in the actions of individuals by BEING salt and light.

tc making a cross is not breaking the second commandment. That commandment is speaking of worshipping things made by man's own hands. It is not the making of them that is wrong. It is possible to wrongly worship something that man has NOT made also, e.g. a tree, the sun etc. I am sure that God has no problem with us making, owning, buying nice things that are the replicas of something else. It is when we put them, or anything else, before God (worship them), that He is angry.

I would hope that the way we live our lives would be the way someone would know/or suspect we are Christians rather than the wearing of a cross. It could actually be seen as hypocrasy if you were in the middle of committing sin while the person seeing it noticed the cross around your neck. Unfortunately non-christians expect perfect behavior from christians and when they see one bad thing many times walk away shaking their head.
---Linda on 6/24/06

That was the point I was trying to make. A cross represents the work of God. It is Holy and acceptable before him as a symbol.
---exzucuh on 6/24/06

"A graven image is anything that represents a god that is not the true God" Agreed but:

My cross represents the sacrifice of Jesus, not a false God. Even if it did represent God to me, it's the God it represents that is important. Was the altar of sacrifice or incense in the Jewish temple a graven image?
It represented God, and I might point out that it was the ONE TRUE GOD and not a golden calf that it represented.

wearing a cross IS NOT a graven image to a false God.
---Pharisee on 6/23/06

A graven image is anything that represents a god that is not the true God, you can make a graven image in your mind by believeing a doctrine that is not of God.A god can only be worshipped in the mind that is what makes it real. A cross is a symbol of salvation it is not a god but can be looked upon the same as the brazen Serpent lifted up in the desert by Moses, whom God commanded them to look upon. What God makes is Holy.

Jesus never asked us to wear the cross, He told us to bear the cross :-)
---eric on 6/23/06

Well pessonally to me I could care less what a person wears , as long as his or her heart is right with God.
---tom2 on 6/23/06

Whether it's a cross or any other "christian" symbol, that's making a graven image and commandment #2 says not to.
