Sue, to grow properly you must allow your spirit to control your soul.

Sue, your soul is made up of your emotions, mind, and will. your spirit is within the heart of what you are , not part of your soul, separate.the spirit is the part of you that actually communes with God.your mind is the battlefield between your spirit and the forces of the deceiver.your will is a part that makes the decision or allows you to have the decision making process, and your emotions help you to discern the physical.you can,t use your emotions to discern spiritual matters.

Proverbs 20:27 lets us know, according to scripture, who we are a spirit. Your spirit is the real you created in God's image.(Genesis 1:26; John 4:24)
Soul is your intellect, mind, will, emotions.
You grow spiritually through the word & communion w/ the Holy Spirit.(2Corinthians 13:14)
Your soul is renewed through meditating on the word.(Romans 12:2; Philippians 4:8; Joshua 1:8; 2Timothy 2:15
