Repentance From Dead Works

Hebrews 6:1 "Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God. What does it mean to "Leave the elementary teaching of the Christ."?

Good Job Greg,
You certainly understand what was being said!
God Bless you

We should LEAVE the elementary doctrine in order to 'graduate' to the "DEPTHS of God" (1 Corinthians 2:10) so we learn the "BETTER things" (Hebrews 6:9) and develop a more intimate relationship with God by HEARING what God's spirit says to each of us in our own lives instead of thinking that all relationships should be identical. "I am who I am" also wants a PERSONAL relationship with each one of us (His spirit yearns jealously, James 4:5) and wants us as "FRIEND".

The word "bible" is not found in scripture, it is simply man's designation for "scripture". Scripture is the INTRODUCTORY doctrine of Jesus that all "babes in Christ" should learn because it teaches self discipline, etc. (training), it is only the "WORD OF TRUTH" (2 Timothy 2:15, Ephesians 1:13, John 14:6). The word "OF GOD" is the "SWORD OF THE SPIRIT" (Ephesians 6:17). There are "BETTER things that belong TO salvation" (Hebrews 6:9).

Jesus is our FOUNDATION (cornerstone) and we should not reject His GIFT by laying a foundation of our own with "works"/deeds and scholarly accomplishment trying to EARN what was a GIFT. If we try to earn or pay back what was a GIFT, it is impossible to 'repent in Jesus'. His judgement is always just (He will not be UNJUST and overlook this apostasy). We should "WALK BY THE SPIRIT" (Galatians 5:16 and 25).

Going on to maturity is going to be hindered if we never get passed the basic elementary subjects. I think leaving them means to go onward past those teachings. Obviously, there are going to be new, young Christians who will have to be taught these basis doctrines so we can't lock them up altogether.

That means we have taken milk long enough. It is time to get into deep knowledge of what God has for us, that is the meat of the Word.

The way I interpret this portion of Scripture after going back to 5:12-14, I believe as I said before, they were not keeping the message of Christ pure, and Paul said, THEREFORE, referring to what was said in ch. 5, he was saying that they had left the elementary teaching, and needed to return and grow in truth.

Debbie,
You are quite correct in that some of the Jews were turning their back on the principles of Christ's teaching. However your explanation does not make sense because the writer is telling these people to leave the elementary teaching. If it were as you say, he should be saying do not leave the elementary teaching.

This portion of Scripture is not talking about progressing from milk to meat, it is talking about leaving, abandoning the basic princiles of Christ's teaching, which those early Hebrews wanted to do. They wanted to combine law and grace. We should never leave behind the basics of our Christian life, but add to them. In the natural when we go from babe to child to adult, we never stop drinking milk but add to the milk solid food.

Hebrews 6:1,2 Leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, or the very basic Word of God which Christ preached from the beginning of His ministry. These first principles laid the foundation for #1 - repentance from dead works (Old Testament Ceremonies), #2 faith, #3 baptism, #4 laying on of hands, #5 resurrection, #6 eternal judgment. This is written to the Hebrews who wanted to cling to their old ways of the law.

A person Leaves the elementary teaching about Christ when they come to a realization and complete acceptance of their security and rest in Christ. The Assemblies of God church, the RCC, the Lutherans, and many many others never reach this realization(or maturity) in Christ. Therefore they are continually repenting and begging for forgiveness from that which they have already been forgiven for.
