The soul is the decision maker. It is that part of our being that we define as "ME". When God made man He formed man from the dust of the earth (Body) Breathed the Spirit of life into his nostrils (Spirit) and man became a living SOUL. The soul is the seat of consciousness. I like the greek words to help define these: pneuma-Spirit, psuche-soul. Notice how similar the word psuche is to our present day word psyche. Study the merismose it helps.

Jerry's definition is the most succinct and biblically faithful.
Dust + Breath of God = Living Soul (Gen 2:7)
Living Soul - Breath = Dust or dead person (Ps 146:4)
Notice: thoughts perish & existence ceases. This does not negate the resurrection because our Creator can recreate what He made in the first place.

There is only one definition of the soul given in scriptures. It is seen in Gen 2:7 that a soul is a two-part combination of the dust of the earth and the breath of God. At death (the soul dies - Eze 18:4), the order reverses and the breath goes back to God, the body returns to the earth and the soul ceases to exist. "His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish." (Psa 146:4)

Mrs. Morgan, you will believe whatever you desire.

The soul of me is the me that is inside my flesh.
---Helen_5378 on 8/24/06

My understanding of the scriptures is that the soul makes us individuals. The part of each living human/animal that has a personality. The spirit is a part of God in His people. I refer to Gen.2:27, since "God is a spirit"(Mat)then Adam was created as a Spirit. Later in Gen.2:7 man became a living soul when God breathed into his newly formed body. I believe that somehow the God Spirit within us blends with our soul to make us, just as the sperm and egg blend to make a human life.

#2 earl, When we become a saint the spiritual connection to God is rekindled and the Holy Spirit dwells in our cicumsized heart and we are than once again abel to commune with God. earl, I thoroughly enjoy discussing this. Thank you so much for the fellowship.

#1 earl, the spirit, soul and flesh are three separate things within every human. We were created with these but something died within man when Adam partook from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The part that truly died was our spiritual connection with God. We became naked, we no longer had the covering and indwelling of the Holy Spirit it had died due to disobedience.

Brother Eloy, (4.)....when Jesus rules on planet earth with a rod of Iron, and lays down the Law! At the end of the 1,000 year Perfect Age, Judgment Day for sinner's occurs(also known as the Great White Throne Judgment) they will be ressurrected too, but it won't be a glorious resurrection like God's Redeemed had. God Bless. --Mrs. Morgan.

Brother Eloy, (3.)...will be TRANSFORMED right on the spot, they will have a glorified body. This will all take place in a moment in a twinkling of an eye, then the World goes into the 7- year Great Tribulation Period, ending with Armageddon. After that, the Earth goes into the 1,000 year reign of Christ on earth also know as the Perfect Age,
---Mrs._Morgan on 8/24/06

Brother Eloy, (2.)...All those who have passed on from this earth, are either in Heaven, or Hell, their soul/spirit that is. When Christ comes again(the Rapture)the dead in Christ will rise first, Jesus will be bringing the souls/spirits of our loved ones in Heaven, and when the Trumpt sounds their soul/spirit will meet with there new transformed bodies as their body will raise from the grave and be TRANSFORMED by the Power of the Holy Ghost, and those that are alive and remain, and READY,
---Mrs._Morgan on 8/24/06

Brother Eloy ,(1.)The spirit and soul of humans are the SAME THING. I don't agree that the soul remains on earth after death, that's what many say, and they say ghost of the dead are floating around, that's not Biblical, what they are seeing are familar spirits which are demons imitating people(ex. Saul was speaking to a familar spirit demon, not Samuel, many deceived people talk to familar spirits today, thinking they are their loves one's, but not so). Some see God's Holy Angels too.

greetings ,thanks for replys, for ryan, thanks for your input.to clarify ,can we speak to God if he is not there?we must have a spirit like the one that was seen after jesus' baptism.can we talk to God if we have no mind?God gives us a mind to think.after the two are in location we must decide if ,how ,we will stay his son.your reply ,thanks for all replys.

The soul is not the mind, and the soul is not the spirit, they are separate. Each person is made up of a body, which is the building or flesh; a spirit, which is the breath or aspiration; and a soul, which is the life or anima. The soul can be living or dead. When one dies the spirit leaves the body and soul, and goes back to God. The body and soul remain behind on earth, until that time that the Lord will call for the dead to rise. (Mark 12:30; Acts 17:25; I Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 4:12).

earl, let me be more specific in my confusion. What is the third part of what? If you mean our created image than it is:Body, Spirit & Soul. If your question is the greek word for flesh it would be: sarx-flesh or body, psuche-soul & pneuma-Spirit. The hebrews also had three different words for these: nephesh-soul, basar-body or flesh & ruwach-Spirit.
---Ryan on 8/24/06

Earl. The soul (Heb Nephesh; GK Phyche)often translated "life", may be briefly defined as the nonmaterial aspects of mind, emotions and will in human personhood. The soul is so closely linked with one's inner personhood that it is sometimes use as a synonym for "person"(Lev 4:2; 7:0; Josh 20:3).
The soul is the real you. The bible talks about "spiritual death"(1 Tim 5:6 etc). There are many scriptures that say the soul is dead even when someone is alive.

earl, I'm sorry brother I don't understand your question. If you could rephrase it it may help.
---Ryan on 8/23/06

Continued:

dead (-ly), desire, [dis-] contented, fish, ghost, + greedy, he, heart (-y), (hath, jeopardy of) life ( in jeopardy), lust, man, me, mind, mortally, one, own, person, pleasure, (her-, him-, my-, thy-) self, them (your) -selves, + slay, soul, + tablet, they, thing, ( she) will, would have it.

And that is all it ever meant in the Old Testament usage

Soul is from the Hebrew word Nephesh

nephesh, Hebrew 5315, Strongs

nephesh, neh'-fesh; from Hebrew 5314 (naphash); properly a breathing creature, i.e. animal or (abstract) vitality; used very widely in a literal, accommodated or figurative sense (bodily or mental) :- any, appetite, beast, body, breath, creature,

(3.)Their bodies of clay were no longer eternal, and eventually turned to dust, while the soul which is eternal had only 2 places to go after the physical body died : a devil's hell, or Heaven. I'm not sure where Adam and Eve are at, Heaven or hell, but I sure know where I am going. Amen! Thank You Jesus! --Mrs.Morgan

(2.).....both body(physical)& soul(a spiritual death). Adam and Eve were created immortal, their bodies of clay were to last for All Eternity like their Souls, never to face corruption(death, decay), but they sinned, and had to take on mortality.
---Mrs._Morgan on 8/23/06

(1.)The Eternal part of us that comes from the Breath of God, according to Genesis, also called the "worm".Evidently the soul is capable of seeing, feeling, smelling and tasting, according to what Jesus said about the rich man who went to hell, and the poor beggar Lazarus who's soul ascended to heaven. I'm sure the soul is airy like, floats. Adam and Eve were told by God that the day they eat of the fruit that He commanded them not to eat they would surely die(Both physically and Spiritually)...
---Mrs._Morgan on 8/23/06

The Soul is that part that makes us God-conscience.
The nature of man is to worship something. Some worship themselves, children, money and so forth.
The Conscience is what God deals with. The lost persons conscience doesn't perform normally and is dead to God. When it does perform properly it condemns the sinner.
The will, emotions and spirit all play a part with the conscience also.
That is why Paul told Timothy, "Let this mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus."

I call it The Real Me.
Very like what Tom and Ryan say.
But we will get some very complex explanations as this blog progresses
