Tithe means Tenth. They're synonymous.

First recording of tithing was Abraham's in Genesis 14:18-20. Scripture does not say that it was a tenth. However, I did find that his tithing was of war booty>>>[Goods that he obtained in battle]. He presented these goods to the priest king of Jerusalem, Melchizedek.

YES! To Christ whne he met him after the battle

tithing was more than a law, don't make it a law. It's like saying, "without you Father God, I can't be blessed". Abram tithe because of his revelation to tithe - not mandated. And before Abram tithe, he was already rich (Gen13). Malachi is under an old testament, when Jesus came, there is no curse whatsoever. - it's FINISHED! And yes, there is no recorded event in the Bible that Abram ever tithe again. In the New Testament, Jesus and His disciples never taught tithing, but criticize the Pharisees as using it as a way to be righteous.

Certainly laws, commandments, etc. were in existence before Sinai. God had commanded sacrifices in Adam's time since God reminded Cain, that if he did right, he would be accepted (Gen 4:7), Noah also offered sacrifice after leaving the ark (Gen 8:20) and special mention is made that he offered of the clean animals, showing that the distinction was already known--God also brought into the ark a different number clean compared to unclean (Gen 2:7 & 8). Abraham kept God's commandments, statues, and laws-Gen 26:5. Abraham and his seed built altars and sacrificed while sojourning in Canaan. While on the way to Sinai God proved Israel by providing manna for six days, and reproved them for refusing His commandments and laws(Gen 16:4-30).

Anonymous is correct. Abraham and 318 of his men attacked the 4 Kings who attacked Lot for not paying tribute. He gave Melchizedek at tithe of his plundered booty.
This is before the law and Abraham's entire relationship with God was based on faith and there was no mention of external law though Abraham did follow the lord's instruction on sacrifice.
Further, in Numbers 31 priest received just 1/10th or 1 percent not 10.
Fulfillment of the law moved us from tithing as a percentage to fully committed. There is no parsing fully committed either you are or are not. How do we tithe, we tithe like people fully committed?

So every third year of tithing the "church" shared all their collections with the poor and widows and orphins.

Does your church empty their coffers every third year? I mean share all they have?
---stephen on 8/10/09

Although it's interesting to point out that Abraham did not even give a tenth from his own personal wealth. Instead he gave a tenth from what he had just plundered. So in essence: what wasn't even his!

And another thing to mention is that there is no indication that he was commanded to give a tenth, but rather he gave of his own free will.

Abraham did tithe. He gave a tenth of his spoils to the king-priest Melchizedek.

Was everytime Abraham tithe, was it recorded in the bible? I don't think so. Just my observation though.

According to Genesis, after the rescue of his nephew Lot (whom he once called his brother), he gave a tithe of the booty taken to the Royal Priest Melchizedek.
Of course, since tithing had not been commanded, and there was no cultic center to whom he could have paid his tithes, what could he possibly have done otherwise?

You can find it in Gen 14:20. Abraham gave tithes of all. Heb 7:2.
---Rebecca_D on 9/20/06

Rebecca. Very interesting comment you made about Abraham tithing of everything he owned. Could you explain how you come to that belief?I can't find any indication that he did this more than once. Thanks.
---john on 9/5/06

Yes, it seems he did and we are not told how often. Also, there is not a shred of Scriptural evidence that God had instructed Abraham to tithe. Although tithing was pre law it was not required until it became law. It's purpose was for the Levitical priesthood, which along with the law, according to Hebrews 7:11-12 was changed. Those who still practice tithing according to the law should go back to Deut.14 for some very wonderful instructions pertaining to it.

Always On ... Thanks

No, Alan, tithing was first mentioned in Genesis (Gen 14:20 also Hebrews 7:6). Jacob also promised a tenth of all the Lord gave him in Genesis 28:22. The first mention of it under the Mosaic law is in Leviticus 27:30-32. It predates the Levite tribe.

Abraham gave tithes to Melchizedek. Everything that Abraham owned he gave tithe on it.
---Rebecca_D on 9/4/06

Was not the tithe introduced as a way of paying the Levites?
In Abraham's time, there were no Levites.
---alan8869_of_UK on 9/4/06

greetings, abraham gave one tenth of his spoils to the milchizedek school treasury at salem, the other ninety he removed to his capitol at hebron.abraham also forced other tribes to tithe as well
---earl on 9/3/06

The only record I could find in the OT concerning the tithe of Abraham is in Genesis 14:18-20. At that time the idea of tithing was not a working concept. If Abraham did tithe again, there is no record of it.
