It may not send you to Hell but it may ruin your health. Either way is dangerous and a chance you are taking. But do ask yourself why do you want to smoke. What are you looking to get out of it? No one wants to risk their health for a stinky cigarette. The time you use smoking can be spent in prayer or winning a soul for Christ. Much healthier and pleasing to God. Learn to make good choices in your life. God blesses that.We are to be a witness for Christ wherever we go, smoking is not a good witness.

There are many things that are not necessarily good for the body either:

Eating fatty, salted, and deep-fried foods, eating foods raised with presticides, not getting enough exercise.

Does this mean that it's a sin to eat at McDonalds? Should we obsess about having healthy bodies? Paul said that doing so benefits us little.
---StrongAxe on 1/31/08

Even unsaved people know cigarette smoking is destructive and a "sin" to the human body. All the research and scietific facts lead to the Tobacco industry finally getting sued for attempting to make people more addicted with nicotine and marketing to teens etc. So even the world knows it's wrong, what of the Christian to figure this out? It's a blessing to be free of this self addictive habit.
---yochanon on 1/29/08

I don't see why not. Just because someone smokes doesn't make him or her any less of a Christian. Why is it that we judge others for their faults, but don't see our own?
---Katie on 1/26/08

I once heard a famous preacher asked the question "Will smokers go to heaven?"

And he answered "Yes, and they'll get there a lot sooner than those of us who don't smoke" :)
---StrongAxe on 1/26/08

Well, you won't go to hell for smoking a cigarette, but why would you want to start something addictive and hurt your body? I did that before we ever knew they were addictive or that they would hurt you. They did hurt me.
---shira_9639 on 1/25/08

Matthew, in the case of addicted smokers who puff away habitually they are committing no greater sinful behavior than the obese 12 year old chowing down on another Big Mac. THe behaviour is what is sinful. Smoking addiction is not good for your physical health because it destroys the body; the addiction is not good spiritualy becasue it is gluttonous. There is nothing wrong with having a cigar at the end of the day, or a puff on a good pipe, from time-to-time.
---Ryan_Z on 5/5/07

If we have received the holy ghost which is jesus spirit then our bodies are the temple of God and we are not to defile it right after i received the Holy Ghost i was still smoking God spoke to me in a aubiable voice his voice filled the hold room i was smoking a Cigarite and he spoke in a gentle voice and told me i was sining agaist him by smoking
---Betty on 5/6/07

*WHat is wrong with having quality tobacco at the end fo the day, like a cigar or a pipe?*

I feel that is a different discussion altogether. I was referring to cigarettes which are meant to be inhaled hence 99% of the time leads to addiction. You also said tobacco dialets the blod vessels and calms the nerves. There are other drugs that calm you down to you know? Marijuana, morphine, cocaine to name a few. It doesn't make it ok or good though.
---Matthew on 5/5/07

I think it's disgusting when obnoxious people open their mouths and let the insults fly. I would rather talk to a smoker that told the truth, than talk to a wizard who's going to smoke.
---RickG on 5/5/07

Why would one want to smoke..I think is is disgusting and the smoker stinks in the breath etc when they talk to you. yuk..If God wanted us to smoke, dont you think he would install a chimney on our head to let out the smoke to stop the stink within??? ((((.O.)))) shaking my head
---jana on 5/5/07

a christian is a christ follower. God's sacrifice on the cross, His blood shed is what sets us free. I quit smoking about two months ago and it hasn't made me any more saved. The reason i quit was because i spent more time energy and emotions on the act of smoking than i did with God. Smoking had become my God...therefore it had to go. There is a lot of judgement out there on the 'obvious' shortcomings and character defects a lot of us have, but it's the condition of the soul God's concerned about
---tracy on 5/5/07

I said it once, and I'll say it again, if God wanted us to smoke, He would have put chimneys on our heads. -Raine

But we do have two chimneys: the nostrils :))
---Caring on 5/5/07

matthew, is obeisiety and congenital heart disease any better? What of the millions of people that slowly kill themselves by gluttonous behaviour. I am not suggesting that smoking a pack or two a day is a good habbit. WHat is wrong with having quality tobacco at the end fo the day, like a cigar or a pipe? Tobacco dialates the blood vessels and calms the nerves, it has been used for it's medicinal effects for thousands of years.
---Ryan_Z on 5/4/07

Will smoking a cig will not damn you to hell. but as christians you should be striving to be Christ like. I would think at the very least a Christian would be tring to quit. All Things are possible through Christ who strengtens me.
---journeytochrist on 5/4/07

This would go over well from the pulpit....

Extra terrestrials must exist, there's proofs with real photographs, not only u.f.o.s but aliens that have a clorophorm, substance inside of them with a crystal, they come from beneath the caves of Mars, A pentagram is found ...on Saturn no less.. then there is the Bermuda Triangle, where planes just disapear from radar, no one gets out alive.... I don't know but these are not just questions to be swept under a carpet.

This is a unique concept, Cynthia.

I would write a statement of fallacies of his lies on a written sheet of paper, Have many of them xeroxed, laminate it, attach it to the windshield wiper of every congregation member SO THAT ALL OTHERS DON'T SINK INTO his seducing chamber of scum. lies from the pulpits are leading ENTIRE CONGREGATIONS DOWN TO SHEOL. You do realize that the heart is merely a blood pump, don't you?
We culturally use "Heart" as a spiritual or emotional metaphor for the canter of our soul. Wouldn't a "broken heart" be fatal?
---JohnE on 5/4/07

Rebecca, I'd be too embarassed to share my TEMPLE of tar and nicotene with the person of the HOLY SPIRIT, as I want to be a bride without spot or wrinkle, a Royal Priesthood, Without Holiness no man will see God, I have never yet, seen a Royal Priest, or Queen up on a pulpit with a cigarette dangling from her mouth, that CHEAPENS a person who is called to be an Ambassador, of the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.
---Cynthia_1 on 5/4/07

RebeccaD, why would you continue smoking with one kidney?
---Peter on 5/3/07

Cynthia: tar and nicotene doesn't reside in the heart with the Holy Spirit. A person can most certainly worship God and smoke to. If a person puts smoking before the Lord, that is where it becomes as sin. When I'm in church and I have my mind upon smoking instead of Christ, it is a sin. Not only smoking but other things as well.

Matthew, tobacco has a pharmacological effect on the body. By your rationale to do something that has a positive effect on the body (ie consuming fried food becasue it produces energy) is o.k. Since tobacco has certain positive pharmacological effects it is, in your opinion, o.k.?
---Ryan_Z on 5/3/07

If you pay attention to the pain and misery that comes with emphysema, lung cancer, and heart attacks that stem from smoking it is hard to disagree that this is the Devil's work.

As a Christian you have God on your side to help you quit. His grace is more then sufficient to help you quit. Ask Him to help you and he will. Have faith and remain vigilant. If you slip up turn to Him in prayer and continue in depending on Him to help you quit.
---Matthew on 5/3/07

Smoking is highly destructive. Some might say if smoking is a sin than eating to many fried foods is a sin. All I can say is at least fried foods serve a purpose. They have calories, they give you energy. Smoking does no such thing. Most people do it because they are addicted and most know that is why they do it. I believe anything destructive is of the Devil.
---Matthew on 5/3/07

Hearken unto Me every one of you, and understand: There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

Cigarettes will shorten/take your life. The Holy Spirit is not affected by your physical lungs and heart. The Holy Spirit is not coughing and wheezing when you smoke.
The Holy Spirit is not affected by your physical liver or your pancreas,...

Pharisees, Jews, except they wash hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. When they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. .. the washing of cups, pots, brazen vessels, tables.

Pharisees, scribes asked Him, "Why walk not Thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?" He said, Well hath Isaiah prophesied of you hypocrites, THIS PEOPLE HONOURETH ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR FROM ME (Isaiah 29:13).
---KSeeopolis on 5/3/07

Smoking is no more a sin then not exercising. The your body is a temple line should also apply to eating bacon or .wait a minute we should be more concerned about Christians eating bacon than smoking. After all, there is more of a Biblical precedent prohibiting pork consumption than smoking (for which there is no Biblical precedent).

As far as the nicotine rush goes, then coffee or tea consumption is sinful. This concern with cigarettes is starting to sound more like asceticism.
---JohnE on 5/3/07

Well how could the Holy Spirit share its place in the heart with tar and nicotene?
---Cynthia_1 on 5/3/07

Everyone is going to give an account to God according to Romans 14:12. And everything that we do good or bad, we will be judged of that by God. So to say that those verses are just for smokers only, isn't true. Because every one shall give an account unto God. Smoking is not evil. If one puts smoking before, God then smoking becomes their god. I have not done that, nor do I plan to ever.

"It is not what enters man that defiles him but what exits his mouth is that which defiles him."

Ryan that passage is talking about words. How we talk and what we talk about. I quit smoking and I believe it is a sin. I just want to say this passage is about something totally different.

Matthew 12
34O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

What we say reveals where our heart is.

#1 It is not what enters man that defiles him but what exits his mouth is that which defiles him (Paraphrasing). So inhaling smoke doesn't defile man but exhaling the smoke does. Drinking doesn't defile man but puking it back up if you've had too much does LOL. I don't know sometimes I think people get a little to trivial and don't recognize the big picture.

#2 We are condemnd for inherent sin that is what Christ died for and that is what is not held against us. There are obious sins idolatry, murder, theft, covetousness, lust, etc...

Can Christians Smoke?
or
Can Christians Sin?
1 John 1:8-11
If we say that we have no sin,we decieve ourselves, and truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins,he is able and just to forgive us from all unrighteousness,
If we say that we have not sinned then we make God a liar, and his word is not in us

All things in moderation is fair to a point but nicotine and poison in moderation are just not part of the moderation equation.
1Cor6:19 Our physical body is to be a Temple for the Spirit to dwell in. This puts the onus on us to do something about cleaning it up.Ps 34:17 (correct translation) Cry, and the Master heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. Pray and Fast.

Alan8869ofUK - Thank you. I have moderate Emphysema, which I guess means it is not the worst kind. I truly believe that the Lord Jesus had me find out so that He could set me free and save my life. Jake, we must include all abuse of the body with the theory you have presented. This must also include: eating disorders (Such as obesity or anorexia), drinking, we must not drive or put ourselves in poositions where the body may be violated or harmed, adrenaline junkies must cease there daredevil ways, be creful not to have too much sex, etc. The body is a temple because firstly you have been made a temple, in other words your soul is a temple of the Living God.

Most of the things we do in moderation some are extremely harmful & others even in Moderation lead us into different degrees of addiction & some are even detrimental. If we look back on smoking 40-50 years ago it was considered chic& the "IN" thing little did we realise we were actually destroying ourselves.Same with drinking, gambling,Flirting& may be others but the signs are there "Thou shalt not --to your own detriment"

Helen ... I am so sorry that you have Emphysema. I do voluntary work at the hospital and have seen how nasty this can be.
These addictions work in different ways on different people. I became addicted to cigarettess so quickly. But I have wine or beer, and never feel the need to have another.
PS I have written to you on the "You get a beer or me" blog

Alan8869ofUK - I actually found that alcohol, cigarettes and Valium were all addictive in the same way. It all started with the very first one, then I wanted more, then more and more. Technically an addict is addicted on the very first one although they may not know it. With cigarettes I went dizzy on top of my head and within the first week I was smoking at least 10 a day -- how I wish I'd never started because I now have Emphysema.

It's strange, but these things are different in the way you get addicted.
Once, I was encouraged (so that I could be a better salesman, by being able to offer & accept smokes) to "learn" how to smoke cigarettes.
I could feel after smoking fewer than 60, that they were becoming a habit. So I threw away the matches. I found the filthy things a few months later, all horrible and mildewy

Is smoking not like sin?
There is the guilty rush of nicotine, like a feeling of our first sin. The problems are endless, but as we continue doing it, we find it harder and harder to stop. It hurts others more than our selves, and is exeedingly cool. In the end, it will kill us.
Pretty close to sin.

Christians can and many do smoke, drink, curse, have affairs, steal, etc. BUT! Why take on even the appearance of evil? Tobacco has many addictive features (some natural, some injected). Tar and other poisons are in the inhaled smoke. It is proven to promote and cause cancer growth.
