"What does it mean to be an overcomer in Christ?
It means that since Christ 'is' The Overcomer, overcomers in Him have the victory through Him, and "we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us." For The believer has been given a victory, that we were not required to fight for, "for whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith", and that faith is His Gift to us. With that victory you have overcome the wicked one, If, " the word of God abides in you." Overcomers have overcome simply "because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world".

Maybe it would be good to revisit this question.

An overcomer is one who has identified in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In doing so, one overcomes SIN, Satan and the World....(Romans 6-8. 1st John)We are a New creation In Christ.

Many like those who died in their sin in the wilderness...never *CROSS* over. Only then do you have part of the *Hidden Manna*..which is the very life of Christ Himself. ( We're not given the Life of Christ AFTER we overcome...but AS we overcome, as this is the ONLY way one can overcome.

#2 "overcometh" in Vs. 4 & 5, implies a battle. It means to "come off victorious." It should be a way of life for a saints to gain victory over the world. The world-system of evil, the flesh (totally depraved nature), and the devil, are all forces engaged in a battle against the saint to try and bring him to ruin. So the saint has to constantly overcome; and we do this through faith, hanging on to eternal realities, just as the faithful in Hebrews eleven.

Hi Sue, I believe that to be an overcomer in Christ is as you walk and grow in Christ, you go from a "babe" to a mature saint in Christ. If you look back at when you were first saved(I keep a journal) and you see how much you have been transformed over the years, I believe you will become an overcomer(mature) in Christ. Not perfect, but much more Christ- like than when you first believed which is achieved by allowing Jesus to live through us and by studying and meditating on the word of God.

By being in Christ, totally believing in Him and Him alone for your problems you can and will have victory. John 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage, I have overcome the world."

#1 I John 5:4,5 - The word whatsoever, gives less status to the person who overcomes and more to the power given to him through the new birth. Those begotten of him, V.1 , have power for victory over the world; they have not only gotten the faith for the new birth, but with it the power to overcome the spirit of the world. Those who are born of God have passed spiritually out of this world into union with Christ, and should be governed by the Spirit of God (Ephesians 2).

Rebecca, this blog answers the other one. As an overcomer in Christ, you can have the victory over smoking, too.

1st John :
Children know their sins are forgiven
Young Men have OVERCOME the evil one
Fathers, have grown as Paul to maturity to help bring the children and young men along and encourage us.
He who is in you is stronger than he who is in the World.
It's one thing to say you are an overcomer, it's quite another to have experienced that overcoming power working within, as we go through those firey trials that bring forth "The Gold tried in those fires". Revelations 3:18

I am an overcomer in Christ because He won the victory over the world, the flesh and the devil on the Cross. I am in Christ and by faith the victory that He won on the Cross over the world, the flesh and the devil becomes my victory. I simply trust the One Who is the Overcomer.

Example. I was battling my past when I was raped as a child. No matter what I done I couldn't put it behind me. Even when I first became saved. Until one night I was tired of being burden down. I cried out to God about how I wanted to be free. God took that burden away from me that was haunting me for 17 years. I can now face this man and have a conversation with him. I sought after victory and by the grace of God, I got victory over this. Through God I overcame this situation in my life.

Eloy: that is exactly right. Those who are crucified with Christ, crucified to the world and the world crucified to them, those who fellowship in the suffering of Jesus Christ, Yes these are the over-comers!!!
These are the ones who loved not their lives even unto death, Keep this mind in you that was also in Christ Jesus, (who became obedient unto death!!)Philippians 2
It's the only way it's gonna happen!

It is overcoming the Accuser of the brothers. "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives up to the death. To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne." Revelation 12:11; 3:21.

It means that "what satan meant for evil, God turns it around for good." It means that whatever happens in your life, if you are a true Believer in Christ Jesus, and you follow Christ, that HE will turn everything around that happens to you for your good. Romans Chapter 8:28 says, "And we know that God causes ALL things to work together for good to them that love Him, to those who are called according to His riches."
---Donna9759 on 9/13/06

Romans 8:37
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors "through Him" that loved us.
---kathr4453 on 9/13/06

It's "Christ in us" that's the overcomer. "He" who is in you is stronger then he who is in the world.
The battle belongs to the Lord, and as we walk by faith IN HIM, ....He has already won the battle. We grow in Him, and realize through our growth and maturity, we have been seated with Him above powers and principalities all along, In Heavenly Places In Christ Jesus. We are dead, and our live has always been hidden with God in Christ Jesus.(Col 3:1-4)

#6 The Holy Spirit is the uniting bond of this union. He has put us into Christ, and cemented us there; and no creature heavenly, earthly, or devilish can dissolve that perfect oneness. Paul blieved it and we should believe it. It leads to peace and quietness of heart; and finally to that golden throne, where the new creation shall live and reign a thousand years and forever.
---Debbie on 9/13/06

#5 Death will not separate us. Life cannot separate us. Angels, principalities, and powers - celestial or terrestrial - cannot separate us; for we are above them all, in Christ Jesus. They are all subject to His sway. The present may perplex us,the future may fill us with dread; but they cannot move us from our place in the Conqueror. Nothing has the power to break the union that exists between the saint and the living God.
---Debbie on 9/13/06

#4 That one who defeats the foe, and makes him serve him. That one who abandons self-effort and trusts God. That one who has no fear of the enemy, but proclaims the victory before the battle; as Paul the pattern of this overcoming life says, Romans 8:38,39. We must have confidence in God's faithfulness. We must not question our eternal security. The Apostle declares that none of the forces of the universe can come between the believer and the love of God as seen in His Gift to us in Christ Jesus.

#3 We are more than conquerors. Romans 8:37. The Diaglott's rendering is, "we do more than overcome," etc. You might ask, "who does this?" "and how is this possible?" This expression is only found in this place. Who is this one who is more than conqueror? He is that one who is never defeated. That one who is reigning over every circumstance. That one who converts defeat into victory, and realizes power out of infirmities, necessities, and weaknesses.
